Thank you, they are the next place I will go if no one chimes in here. I have used them before for basic moving (just loading and unloading the truck). I love that the money goes straight to the workers. I looked them up last night. I was just really hoping for someone with some organizational tendencies because I am lacking in that area, big time.

If you don’t get any bites from the Forum, and depending on how much you can pay, you might try the Millionaire Club. I’ve used them for yard work and have been very happy. They background check the workers and match workers to the job. You must pay $10-$12/hour and are encouraged to provide lunch. The minimum number of hours is 4.

Okay moments after I posted this yesterday there was a HUGE lighting strike and thunder shook my house and boom the forum went down. It wasn’t me I swear!!! I am going to try and post this again since the other one is empty

I have moved (from west seattle to the beacon hill area *hanging head*) but I hope it is still okay to post here. You all have been the kindest sweetest most wonderful community and I am not sure where else to turn other than Craigslist and to be honest I have had TERRIBLE luck there.

I am looking for a motivated, detail oriented, organized type of person to help me get my home unpacked, cleaned up, and organized. I just can not do it all myself. Sadly due to an injury money is a little tight right now so as much as I would love to hire someone to do the WHOLE job I will likely only be able to hire for a set amount of time (depending on the hourly rate) and just get done as much as we can in the time I can afford. If you or someone you know could help me out, please contact me, the sooner the better.

PS this is a dog friendly home (in case anyone has allergies are fear of dogs – they are here but you won’t need to interact with them)

    Thank you kindly

I’m going to call out MomofBoys as being exactly what I was talking about. Mom, your whole self-described ‘angry’ post is a litany of ‘How dare people not consider that maybe this, or maybe that’ or a whole list of extenuating circumstances that might somehow mitigate the fact that your children are being disruptive and unpleasant in public. Yes, maybe any or all of those things, and yes, it would be lovely if people would be understanding and sympathetic. But…

Nobody owes you compassion or understanding.

You are not entitled to it. Compassion and understanding is a kind gift, and we should all be grateful when it’s offered to us. Especially since, difficult as they certainly would be, none of the things you mention are anyone else’s responsibility. By expecting compassion and understanding, by demanding it as you are and painting it as simply your due, you’re taking it for granted and utterly missing the point, not to mention setting a terrible example about being considerate of other people’s feelings and comfort. Something that, as others have point out, increasingly seems to be lacking in interactions between strangers in public.

In reading the recommendations section, all that pops up is West Seattle and seems like some excellent favorites along California Ave. but even though I put in a search on WSB Forums and on the White Center blog, nothing comes up. I live closer (in WSea) to the White Center side and would appreciate ‘tried and true’ salons with the usual needs; clean, good communication, friendly, clean-with-no-past-reports-of-fungus-infection, etc. I also want a place that likes to do a little nail art on one toe or one finger that is good/cute. Really appreciate any experienced customer inputs.. and guys.. I LOVE seeing more men come in for mani/pedis.. so cool!

Update: Here is a long reply from Joelle Hammerstad, a Parks communication team member with whom we and other news media deal regularly. I asked a few key questions about permits, mentioning the discussion had originated here; she found the thread, and sent me the following:

We have been discussing this issue with both volleyball players and beach visitors/neighbors for years. Let me take the issues I saw pointed out one at a time.

    1. Permitted tournaments.

There are seven volleyball courts on Alki. Six of them are permitted for volleyball tournaments every Saturday and Sunday from mid-May through mid-September. Those permits allow use of the courts from roughly 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. – never later than 6 p.m.

    2. Amplified sound.

We do allow amplified sound at the tournaments between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. only. Amplified sound outside that time frame is prohibited, and should be reported. Also, according to the permits issued, all speakers should be pointed in the direction of the water to minimize impacts on neighbors.

    3. Parking for permitted tournaments.

Seattle Parks and Recreation does not permit parking for any of the tournaments because the property is SDOT right of way. Here is information from my colleague at Seattle Department of Transportation regarding reserving parking: To reserve curbside parking, a person must complete an application and submit it to SDOT. This can be done online. A link to the application and the explanation: http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/parking/tempnoparking.htm

Barricades of the type shown on this website must be rented and placed at the curb. They can be rented from a private company. To find out more about this, the phone number for the Traffic Permit Counter is (206) 684-5086.

    4. First come, first served (FCFS).

Of the seven courts at Alki Beach, six are reserved every Saturday and Sunday, all day, from mid-May to mid-September. One court is considered FCFS. The spirit intended for FCFS is that the court is open to a multitude of groups on any given weekend – not just one group who camps at the court all day. If you are not playing volleyball on the court, it should be ceded to someone else.

    5. Unpredictability of court use.

All permits for the volleyball tournaments – all major events in parks, for that matter — are posted on Seattle Parks and Recreation’s website. The list is updated every Thursday. It is here: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/Publications/big_events.pdf

    6. Over-use of Alki Beach by volleyball players.

As mentioned above, all the tournaments are permitted and the FCFS court is intended to allow anyone to play without a reservation. Current policy does not allow us to restrict use by families or groups who bring their own nets and set up for their personal use. In other words, if a family or other group wants to enjoy a game of volleyball at Alki, bring their own net and find space to set it up, that is allowed.

    7. Tournaments spilling onto sidewalk.

Tournaments are not allowed to set up bleachers, tents or commercial blow-up advertising balloons.

    8. Reporting permit violations.

Violations can be reported to Jeff Hodges at jeff.hodges@seattle.gov. Seattle Parks and Recreation appreciates extra eyes in the park. Reporting should be as specific as possible – time, date, location, group name if known and most important: photos. Without specific information, allegations can turn into “he said, she said” discussions.

    Other stuff to think about:

Seattle Parks and Recreation takes very seriously the concerns raised on the West Seattle Blog regarding the use of Alki Beach. Alki Beach is a popular park, and our intention is to promote balanced and equitable use of our parks. We are not staffed at a level that allows us to have dedicated enforcement staff on the ground each weekend ensuring compliance, which is why we encourage people to report violations.

P.S. And if you missed our original story:

Since government doesn’t adequately fund education any more, PTAs have to have auctions every year to pay for things that in some cases are as basic as desks. Small local independent businesses donate to those auctions – giving away merchandise and services for free, so the schools can get a few hundred (or more) more bucks. (We don’t have merchandise to offer, so we sponsor nonprofit events – cash and in-kind advertising.) And this same funding model is employed by many nonprofits that make this community a better place, in countless ways.

If you are on the other side of the equation, the people bidding on and buying the auction items, or also making donations, by the way, THANK YOU.

Anyway, forgive me the passion but if you are not a business owner, you need to understand what they already give. Maybe they are just too tired to also put in an hour on the sidewalk picking up after slobs. The two ladies about whom I’m writing are also the primary staffers of their shops, in addition to doing all the behind-the-scenes stuff it takes to run a business. I know I’m too tired some days to do some extra things I SHOULD and COULD do but just can’t, beyond my scope of accountability, and I bet the same goes for you.

(this is the closest one to WS). From their flyer:

Here’s your chance to speak up to provide input for transit and access along the downtown Seattle waterfront:

    http://waterfrontseattle.org/Calendar/Detail/650/

When: Wednesday, June 26th, 5:30 PM

Where: Washington State Convention Center (800 Convention Place, Seattle)

    Cost: Free

Why: Because I don’t want to read complaints later about there being too many bike lanes and too much pedestrian space, but not enough car lanes.

If anyone wants help biking or running to this event, please let me know. I’ll likely be run-commuting that day, so I can be a running buddy back to West Seattle after the meeting.

    Hope to see you there!

We are west facing in the Admiral District, and the unpowered Mohu Leaf antenna works for us. It gets over 20 channels including the major network channels. I agree that different locations in the house work better than others.

We used the amplified Terk antenna in the past. It picked up a couple more channels (ION and KBTC), but it tips easily. It stopped working after falling off our mantle.

I, too, do not listen to NPR, and msnbc on a very, very limited basis. I read, I look things up, I try to be fair, but, wrong is wrong…like spending 50 mil on 37 votes in the house to repeal Obamacare, and no jobs anywhere. You do not have a corner on education, no matter what you think. :)

I just saw this article about a former Conservative reminiscing about the Morton Downey Jr. show. There’s a new documentary coming out about it.

Has a couple great quotes in the article that I thought summarized things nicely.

One is that he reiterates the notion that MDJ begat Limbaugh/O’Reilly shoutdown tv just like Lee Atwater begat Turd Blossom modern dirty political tricks.

The other quote that I thought is wonderfully succinct and spot on is this:

“Post-Reagan conservatism is largely based on stunted, undeveloped, childish, contra-empirical ideas about the world — ideas that both confirm and enable simplistic notions about the role of government in society.”

He goes on…”The success of the Downey show was due to the carefully choreographed delivery of the ideas from an authoritative, alpha-male role model who wasn’t afraid to throw down like a testosterone-possessed teenage boy. He was a heavy metal political rocker without the long hair and leather and he used the persona to tap into that politically immature mindset.”

Hoping we figure out how to move on to a better political zeitgeist asap.

Oh my gosh, I wish this story would just die already….so Vera did something that people didn’t agree with. I was surprised as well. However, Village Green is Vera’s livelihood – how she pays her bills, mortgage and how she takes care of her kids. Meanders got a ton of support from the community, a lot of publicity for the restaurant by going to the media with the story, and a lot of new customers. As a White Center business owner, I’m tired of seeing Vera crucified for the decision she made to host the show. Vera and Michelle had an established relationship/friendship before all of the controversy and was taken aback and flustered by Michelle’s surprise visit at her business that day. She has already been raked over the coals for her decision to host the show and been told by countless people that she has lost their business. She expressed on her Facebook page that she was just waiting for the angry mob to show up (which did, just not in person) and explained her reasons for her decision. The reasons were valid to her whether others agree with them or not. As I said, I was confused and disappointed to see Michelle given a venue as well, but Vera has also done a lot for the community and I hate to see people forget that and continue to drag her through the mud and potentially lose her business because she made an unpopular decision. The situation and its subsequent publicity have been great for Meander’s and harmful to Village Green. If Village Green ends up folding will people say “Well good, she deserved it”? Is that really what people want to become of this situation? It’s kind of old news, it happened back in April. I think Vera and Village Green have been “punished” enough.

I used them for my last move and it was really helpful. I had a coupon from my Chinook Book for $25 off and then the guy showed up late so I asked if he’d deduct the delivery fee (hey, I read reviews on Yelp so at least I knew to ask!) so it turned out to be super cheap and stress-free. I got 25 boxes and ended up not using maybe three boxes because I already had some Rubbermaid storage containers too. And as SarahScoot mentions, the best part is it forces you to unpack quickly and you look somewhat organized with matching boxes!

Yep, twice; first in January 2010 (apartment to condo rental move, fourth floor in each case), then again in July 2011 (condo to purchased house). The customer service was incredible. The boxes are great; they stack so easily and hold so much. The dolly they provide is perfect for stacking those boxes about four high. They provide labels and everything. Delivery and pick-up were both right on time both times, and the driver was very personable and helpful.

Also, a hidden benefit is that since it costs money to keep the boxes longer, there’s a major motivation to unpack things ASAP. ;-) Plus, even while the boxes are still sitting around unpacked, it all looks less chaotic than random cardboard boxes.

My husband’s favorite part was the lack of cardboard cuts. And no running out to Target at 10 PM for another roll of packing tape.

Seriously, I have nothing but good things to say about them. Well worth the up-front cost, which some balk at. Let me know if you have questions, but I cannot recommend them highly enough.
