JanSParticipantI totally agree…that’s a great song…

in forum PoliticsaddParticipantI’m not a die-hard Obama fan, but there’s something about his whole vibe that makes me think this would be a great campaign song for him – I get chills listening to it!!
Check out Five For Fighting’s song entitled “World”… (sorry, you will have to search for it yourself, I don’t know how to link to an mp3 file??)

KeithMemberCongrats on your big event and kudos for the shout-out to the local businesses who helped you make it happen. I love it when people take the time to say “thanks for the great work” instead of just bitching about what went wrong.

charlabob falls in a dead faint in amazement…
nobody looks up her skirt because she is wearing pants…
JoB goes off to soak her head…
JoB will find the mantle in the morning where charlabob dropped it on her way out to celebrate her amazing transformation.

JanSParticipantok..so…Barack Obama’s mother is/was white, father is a Muslim from Kenya. Father left the family when he was 2 years old. So that would make Mr. Obama half black, half white. The fact that there was a Muslim somewhere in his life is irrelevant, and has no place in this election. The fact that his heritage belongs to Kenya has nothing to do with this election, and is irrelevant. The fact that he wore the native Kenyan garb during a visit has nothing to do with this election, and is irrelevant. The fact that there is a nasty false e-mail circulating on the internet is shameful. If any of this is brought up by any of the other candidates, well, my opinion is that it’s being brought up to be inflammatory, when it’s irrelevant. Totally irrelevant. His light skin, his dark skin…who gives a damn. Outward physical appearances are irrelevant. John McCain can’t lift his arms up all the way over his head…so what. Hillary Clinton has a (yes, let’s admit it) shrill voice…so what? NONE of that has anything to do with being a president. The “3AM” ad is irrelevant. Do we really believe that Mr. McCain or Mr. Obama wouldn’t know what to do in that situation? That they would just roll over and go back to sleep? I don’t. The ad means nothing to me. Remember the ad for Burger King? “Where’s the beef”? We all need to start paying attention to the “beef”, and not to all of this little picayune crap…candidates included.
Mr. McCain, Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama…they all have things that I’m sure could be brought up…dirty politics? Are we destined to have to put up with it forever? I certainly hope not. It’s demeaning to the candidates, to the parties, and most of all to the people who want to make good, educated decisions about who will be the next president. So tell me what you’re gonna do, not what dirt you can dig up on the other guy that has no meaning here.
I’m already tired of the whole thing, and we haven’t gotten to the convention yet…geez.

charlabobParticipantNR and BDG,
Thank you for clarifying — I believe that you didn’t mean to offend. I left, intending never to come back to the blog. I have come to value civil political discourse here. Probably too much.
My reaction to the posting, accompanied by “Isn’t this funny,” is great sadness. Andrea’s reaction reassures me that you don’t have to be a geezer to understand. When I was young, I had teachers who had been victims of the McCarthy (not Eugene) witchhunts. I hadn’t experienced any of it and I never forgot their pain. So I expect more of and give more credit to the gen <x,y,z,aa> folks. In fact, so many of them do get it.
JoB, I hope the hominy soup and cornbread were as good as they sound. You clearly are a woman of many talents. I, OTOH, went shopping for paper shredders — we needed one and it seemed like a good metaphor.
Thanks, guys for making me think…even when I don’t like it.

BonnieParticipantLOL! House, I was a Republican until that idiot came into office and now I’m a Democrat…BUT I’m leaning more toward Hillary than Obama because he seems to be getting a smug attitude and I’m not happy with it.

barmargiaMemberKayleigh, as disgusting this is, whether it’s a “joke” or real, I don’t think it’s technically enough to arrest someone over. I don’t know for sure but I’m pretty sure the military has him. But I also do not think that his family warranted death threats. Because he did something so deplorable doesn’t mean his family was at all responsible.
March 6, 2008 at 2:22 am #615517In reply to: Go Hillary
JoBParticipantI am not the lest bit confused by the response… but then i am aware that Obama is a politician… something you seem to be unaware of..
He is calling the moral high road… and getting everyone distracted by Hillary’s “dirty campaign tactics” to distract from the real issues… and it’s working. good politician.
Which of three photos on the daily KOS site actually came from anything? … I don’t remember anything that actually said any of them were from anything .. they were posted as an example of what can be done… do you know that they started with the original?
and hillary has never said that she was responsible for the picture posted showing Obama in native dress… she said she couldn’t guarantee that some staffer somewhere had not posted it. that’s an honest anwswer.
Yet, she stands accused so it must be all be true…
where is your critical thinking?
Who really stood to gain from from a stupid stunt like that? Not Hillary. She already knew that the Obama campaign invokes the “high road” on a regular basis. She would have to be pretty stupid to personally authorize anything like that wouldn’t she.. and stupid is not something even her detractors accuse her of..
I doubt very much that Hillary authorized either… but for the sake of argument, let’s say she did…
Is Obama’s muslim father such an obstacle to his election that nobody except him can mention it? I believe he mentions it regularly.
Is Obama’s color (or lack thereof) such an obstacle to his election that it can’t be mentioned by anyone except him?
I don’t think so. Bigots exist. I don’t think they care much what Hillary’s campaign materials are… they aren’t affected either way.
The big elephant in the room is that Obama is half black, half muslim… There.. i said it.
I dont’ think it makes a d…d bit of difference.
But you don’t get to claim the benefits of being half black and half muslim and then turn around and claim the high road if you think anyone (and i mean that literally) mentions or alludes to it.
What a bunch of fuss about basically nothing.
And if you are all getting so excited now by such trivial things.. how are you going to handle the real assaults.. because they will be coming.
It’s amazing to me how touchy you all are about anything that you think could smear the reputation of your candidate… and why do you think that Obama in native dress and/or a slightly blacker looking Obama would smear your candidate?
I repeat.. if you want your candidate to actually win this election if he gets the nomination, you are going to have to grow a lot togher skin.

jissyParticipantWhile I appreciate everyone’s feelings on both sides of this coin, in light of what’s gone on this week at the 2007 Street of Dreams and ELF’s agenda, I’d caution anyone from putting actual street identifiers, addresses, and labels on peoples homes. As we’ve seen on this blog lately, you never know who’s trolling here and what their agenda is. I’m sure we’d all be shattered if something happened in our community, regardless of how you feel about someone building any type of home.
Not criticizing or judging by any means, I just at times try to wear the shoe on the other foot for a moment and consider everyone’s safety, espec. that of our West Seattle community.

JoBParticipantcharlabob….
i went shopping.. bought veggies and sausage to put in a mexican inspired hominy soup for supper. think i will make cornbread too. I am still simmering:(
there are some times i hate to be reminded of.. and we have had them both the last two days… vietnam and the horror that was and now ken starr and slimegate… both make me physically ill to think about.
Neither will be on most under 30’s radar… and not on the radar of some of them over 30… it is impossible to read about them and understand them viscerally.
just as it is impossible for today’s young women to understand what an insult Obama’s dismissive behavior is of Hillary right now… having never really experienced being marginalized that way…
I am trying to be gracious… i know you really do have to live this long to acquire the memories we have… but part of me would like to just shake people silly.
Making cornbread will generate more dishes…

AnonymousInactive“If this is something legitimate, it’s one of the most egregious acts of animal cruelty I have ever seen, if not the most,†said Dr. Matt Mickas, chief of Community Practice Services at WSU’s veterinary college.
He said it did not appear fake to him, because of the way the animal went slack by being held from the neck.
“To me, the sound on the YouTube clip sounded like a puppy in distress — the same sound we hear when the puppies come into the hospital,†Mickas said

andreaParticipantHusky Deli in the Juncion makes the absolute best sandwiches (their tuna is to die for!!) and salads in my opinion…they can put plates of things together usually in a short amount of time.

addParticipantBlue Willow Catering (in the Junction) or Herban Feast (Admiral Junction) are both great caterers with extensive appetizer menus – mini crabcakes from Herban Feast are terrific (but a little expensive) and I’ve had great, unusual things from Blue Willow.

ErikParticipantThe ego is always looking for a way to validate itself by standing out (to be more special than others). Perhaps this was their way of saying “hey I bet this will get a million hits on Youtube!” Fame, whether positive or negative is what it’s after.
In lieu of doing something positive to find this fame, they’ll take the easier, darker route.

villagegreenMemberThe happy hour at Ama Ama is pretty awesome as well. 50 cent oysters, $3 sliders (steak, lamb, or fried oyster), $3 beer, and $5 Cosmos. Definitely not the ideal summertime location (since there’s no outdoor seating), but right now it’s great. I think it’s 4-6pm everyday.
March 6, 2008 at 12:53 am #616711In reply to: Going rate for babysitters
addParticipantI think it depends on the age of the bbsitter and the age/number of kids. We usually paid about $7/hour for teenagers to watch our elementary-school aged kids, closer to $10 for our “older” babysitters (21+).

flowerpetalMemberI agree with Salty’s particularly in the summer, but year round is great too… oyster shooters!
A few weeks ago I was at Telarico (did I spell that right?) for happy hour. Not a huge menu, but fun just the same, and a single slice of pizza which was huge was at a happy hour price.

AnonymousInactivebeachdrivegirl- that’s what I don’t understand (maybe that’s a good thing because maybe that means I’m not crazy), but how and why do people ever come up with the idea to do something like that? It’s kinda like the situation that was going on on this forum in the past couple of days (of course, not to the same extent); what kind of people get these ideas and think that they are good ones?
March 6, 2008 at 12:38 am #616538In reply to: The Marine and the Dog
AnonymousInactivers261 – Have authorities determined the video is fake, or is that your opinion? I’m really hoping it’s fake, but all the security surrounding this marine has me concerned that maybe it’s not.
My husband brought up the fact that the puppy doesn’t move, but it could just be scared. My problem with the authenticity of it was the distance. The sound (at least from the dog) seems fake to me as well.
