When discussing this issue with others, I generally say that Target is my one “corporate guilty pleasure”.

I just realized recently, that I should add Amazon to that list, although it could be argued that they are local, albeit a large corp.

Otherwise, my general, regular, shopping consists of Thriftway, Bartell’s White Center (have regularly patronized other locations, depending on which was closest/most convenient at the time), Meat the Live Butcher, and Lee’s Produce Market.

Local restaurants I try to get to about once per month; Zippy’s, Meanders, Huang Xua (White Center, for Banh Mi for lunch, and usually a rice noodle based salad for dinner), and Toshi’s Teriyaki.

Occasional other corp visits; Bed Bath & Beyond, maybe 4 times a year on average, and Staples and Big 5 to a lesser extent.

Washer works but is old and goes out of balance fairly frequently (bang, bang, bang, bang). Dryers (2) are pretty well kaput although who knows? Anyway free for the taking. Sitting on sidewalk at northwest corner of 38th and Raymond. I contacted the one guy on CL who said he was a scrapper in West Seattle but he said less than 500 lbs. is too little… If anyone knows a local scrapper send them my way. If not gone in a few days I will take them to the transfer station. (Neighbors don’t fret too much!) Thanks.

Or “LBB’s”, the birder’s derogatory referral to “little brown birds” – which are my favorites as they often have the sweetest song.

Anyhoo, I could probably I.D. the spider for you if I could figure out a way to view the image. Suggestions? I tried copy and paste but it didn’t work.

Handsome little devil. Sorry, no idea. Maybe there’s a designation for spiders like there is for fungus – i.e. “LBMs” which stands for any of the hundreds of indistinct little brown mushrooms that require more than a few seconds to uniquely identify?

Idris Elba was criticized for his “Wire” accent sounding more NY than Baltimore. There are some funny clips on YouTube when Dominic West lapsed into his native accent. In one episode, he ‘faked’ a British accent to go undercover, which cracked up his colleagues.

And British productions are always interesting due to the varying and divergent accents of the native speakers – even when they are supposed to be family members, as in “Downton Abbey”.

Agree on Idris Elba on the Wire and I was surprised to hear a British accent when I saw Dominic West in an interview. Lauren Cohan, who is Maggie on the Walking Dead, has a fairly convincing Southern accent. She’s British but was born in America and left in her early teens.

Kevin Costner in Robinhood is my favorite accent, though. ;)

I’ve heard that apparently it is linguistically easier for an Aussie or a Brit to do an American accent than vice versa.

On a related subject, I was just speaking with some fellow native Bostonians recently about certain actors are masters of the Boston dialect. Of course this list was heavy in native speakers (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg). But there are also some non-natives that have done a very good job, like Bebe Neuwirth in Malice (1995) and Leo DiCaprio in films like the Departed (2006) and Shutter Island (2010). Those who have done a passable job, like Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting (1997). And those who have absolutely mangled it by mixing it with a New York accent: Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen.

Charlie Hunnman is a Brit and plays a California biker on Sons of Anarchy. I think he is one of the best looking men on TV but he hasn’t quite mastered the American accent. Last week was painfully obvious. From my previous post, Justin Chambers on The Wedding Planner, bad movie, bad accent. yes to Idris Elba! Excellent actor.

I would definitely agree that Brits & Aussies do better American accents than we do theirs. Examples: Idris Elba (The Wire), Robin McLeavy (Hell on Wheels) – the list is long.

Russell Crowe thinks that his accents are great, but they’re pretty crap. Several journalists have almost been punched out for saying so.

One American who can do any accent brilliantly is Meryl Streep.

The worst accent I’ve ever heard was Renee Zellweger in “Bridget Jone’s Diary”.

Voting ballots were recently mailed out, mine arrived Friday or Saturday. While driving on Marine View Drive Sunday morning I spotted a Voting Ballot envelope. I stopped to investigate further and found a total of 4 unopened ballots belonging to residents on 35th Ave SW near 110th SW. There was also some junk mail. I returned a ballot to one resident who agreed to take the others to the neighbors who didn’t answer their door. If you are a registered voter who hasn’t received your ballot, and you have an unlocked mailbox – it may have been stolen. Please remember to vote.

Yup, JoB, it’s all about image, not substance. Remember when the Bella Abzug’s of the world got respect for their intelligence and grit and actually moved the needle for women?

Now, the R’s are looking for the photogenic airheads who couldn’t put forth a cogent argument if their life depended on it.

Palin, Bachmann, Hasselbeck, the faces on Faux News, the list grows every day.

But it sells. Unfortunately, it sells…

Do note that the cafe has been listed for sale for a while:

    http://www.commercialmls.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=property.detailBO&ln=120466

We’ve seen that listing for at least a few months. We don’t routinely report restaurant-sale listings any more as we’ve also noticed that they come and go – sometimes a restaurant will be posted, the listing will stay up a few months, then the listing will go away without an ownership change. But since you bring it up, it’s worth noting. Perhaps it’s already changed hands. Usually the only indication we get of that is when liquor-license transfer applications turn up in the state’s database.

While walking up the trail from Colman Pool toward the upper Bluff Trail, I encountered a medium-sized white dog. He/she was coming down the hill and we passed. I spoke to the dog in a friendly manner while scanning the trail for the owner. He/she seemed a little scared or stressed and kept going down the hill toward Williams Point and the pool. I believe the dog had a collar on. He/she had very strong pit bull features, but did not appear to be pure bred. I would say he/she was about 25 lbs.

Soon a couple of folks came along with their dogs and we discussed the lost dog. They had seen it earlier at the top and were going to try to get a better look at the collar in case there was a phone number to call. I hope the dog is reunited soon with its owner. This happened around 4:50 pm today. ~z

The simple fact that it didn’t carry any counties suggests the hard pull it’s gonna’ be and/or how people felt about the specific configuration of that iteration of an income tax.

And it does appear that it was significantly more popular on the west side than the east, albeit not popular enough.
