I may be sorry for stepping in here, but it seems to me that the issue of disproportionate representation involves three factors:

    – the 100 electors who correspond to the total number of senators. Unlike Representatives, Senators are not apportioned by population; every state gets two. Therefore, less populated states have more clout per resident in the Electoral College than more populated states;

    – every state has a minimum of one Representative, and therefore one additional Elector, even if their population doesn’t rise to the required level; there are currently seven states with one Representative for a total of 3 Electors. The District of Columbia has 3 Electors regardless of population. This is a total of 24 Electors for very small states where the combined population may not result in that many slots;

    – apportionment of Electors is based on the Census, which occurs every ten years. A lot of population change can happen in 10 years these days. 17 states experienced changes in their number of representatives, resulting in 12 positions being moved, following the 2010 Census (see chart in Wiki article.)

Clearly, these three issues carry enough weight to result in an imbalance in a close election.

This conversation reminds me of the federal court ruling regarding the makeup of the governing body for the now defunct Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle (for you newbies, Metro Transit used to be part of an countywide independent government before being ‘merged’ into King County.) Basically, the 42 member Metro Council was made up of officials elected to other positions as well as some representatives appointed by the King County Council. Which elected officials served was based somewhat on population so that jurisdictional interests throughout the county were represented.

Judge Dwyer ruled that the makeup of the Council was unconstitutional as it violated the ‘one person – one vote’ principle as representation was disproportionate in that residents of some areas had more people representing them than other parts did. The issue was whether a majority of the members were elected or appointed. The judge, citing a SCOTUS opinion, ruled that the situation could be resolved by changing the makeup to address this imbalance, but a decision was made to merge the agency into the county government. Not a direct parallel, but I found it interesting. It also made me wonder if a provision of the Constitution could be found to be unconstitutional.

redblack – thanks. I enjoy ferreting out this kind of detail, especially in light of all the grandstanding by these compassionate conservatives who have to find Satan in everyone who doesn’t share their beliefs; I refer to them as Old Testament ‘Smite Thine Enemy’ Xtians to separate them from the New Testament ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ followers of that religion.

btw, the case *may* have been South Dakota v. Dole. SD lost, but the court established rules for withholding federal funding.

“Wyoming’s a great example of outsize influence per capita. So is Vermont. Small state on each side, it’s a wash”

this statement fails because it totally ignores the bigger issue here.

you stated that delegates to the electoral college are based on allocation of representatives to the US House… if electoral votes give small states undue influence.. so does the allocation of representatives… a factor that i alluded to in my Washington State example.

the notion of balancing state power was predicated on an a much different society than the one we have now.

as someone said when they looked at the red and blue map on election night.. i don’t see voters.. i see land. The same observation would hold true in Washington State.

Congress froze the number of Representatives at 435 in 1911.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apportionment_Act_of_1911

If we still followed the intention of the constitution, we would have a Rep for every 50K-60K people.. or they would be apportioned as they were prior to 1911 according to population.

and.. by the way.. the reasoning behind the cap on representatives was to prevent the undue influence of immigrants (foreigners) flooding into urban centers…

    http://uspolitics.about.com/od/thecongress/a/Why-There-Are-435-Members-Of-The-House-Of-Representatives.htm

or what current Republicans would call “the mob”…

Ever noticed how dysfunctional the Alaska Junction is? Aside from off leash dogs and feces on the sidewalk, homeless people drinking alcohol in public, there are other violations every few minutes all day long. People turn left from California to Alaska despite the signs north and south which say no left turn 7 am – 7pm. People turn right on red even though each street light has a sign right next to it saying no right turn on red. People walk when it says do not walk.

The video I am attaching includes what I saw within 5 minutes around 11 AM on a weekday. First, you will see a black SUV turning right on red by Easy Street, a black Kia turning left where it is prohibited. The Kia eventually has to make their turn on a red, cutting off the white truck that now has a green arrow and the right of way. Finally a guy walking against the light. Seriously folks I saw all of this (and more that I didn’t record) in less than 5 minutes.

This area is so quick and easy to catch people behaving badly that I will likely post more videos soon. I have asked law enforcement and DOT several times over the years to enforce or improve this intersection. Haven’t seen any police presence or any changes from DOT. So, it’s time to throw some light on this problem. Take a look next time you are there and I bet you will see some violations.

If Seattle Scofflaw could just chime in on their method of capturing the video, that’d be great.

This video shows it panning from the right rear view mirror to the left and it doesn’t appear to be attached on the dash since the front of the dash is in the video. But that’s just my assumption.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmcs8wwo5GI

If it’s truly a dash mounted camera that’s capturing this without distracting the driver – that’s awesome. I’m not a fan of the bus/HOV lane violators, myself. If they’re breaking the law themselves, possibly causing an accident, in order to capture these driving and bicycling infractions – please find a safer way to do so.

If you have ever wanted to learn safe operation of guns, Pink Pistols is having a range day Nov 19.

Learn details, ask questions, at the FB event page

You don’t need a gun, the range has rentals – $15 or $10 for unlimited rental, rotate your selection. You need to buy ammo. Have eye and ear protection.

This is not a class, just a gathering. But most folk will be very helpful to learn safe operation.

Melissa – spare me the self-righteousness indignation.

“..affected by this travesty”. Travesty? What Travesty?? By whom or what definition?? Are you now belittling our Democratic process to only fit your own narrow political standard ?!

My light-hearted jab at the local liberals ‘devastation’ from the election PALES in comparison to the ignoramus masses out protesting nightly in majors cities across the country. Why do I not see any of the national media or DNC members or POTUS loudly denouncing this behavior (criminal rioting, looting, burning effigies in some locations)? Where is the “time to heal message” from the left? The post-election hypocrisy is palpable.

you get your news from Breitbart…of course you don’t believe that he is any of those things. They’re a pretend news source…

Is Steve Bannon Racist? Let’s Find Out!

    https://www.romper.com/p/5-steve-bannon-quotes-that-explain-why-trumps-chief-strategist-pick-is-concerning-22563

but people can believe what they will, of course…even you. I just wonder about all these people who keep saying that they can’t find anything to point in this direction, or that direction…does your internet not work? Or does it only work when it’s denigrating Obama, etc…as it has for years, telling stories about him being Muslim (some still believe that), or from Kenya…wow, he’s black, must be from there, or claiming that his birt certificate was a fraud, and still is.

You see, you call out liberals for not “accepting”…and conveniently forget about those on your side of the fence…lol..about that fence…you’ve heard Trump now saying that it might not be a solid wall now, that, yes, there could be fences…that will surely get a rise out of his supporters, huh…

redblack: You guys have really got to get over this nonsense and accept the results of the election. You also have to ask yourself a serious question: If high voter turnout always resulted in a democrat win in the past, what the hell happened this time with the highest voter turnout in history resulting in a republican sweep of the senate, house and 32 governorships? At what point do you think even more voters would have turned it around? There is a severe disconnection between your rhetoric and reality.

With regard to changing the rules: The election was not about wining the popular vote. It was about winning under the rules of the electoral college. If it was about popular vote, then the candidates would have run their campaigns differently. States do not have the same number of electors for the number of voters. Each is proportionally different. Candidates campaign in accordance to the electoral college delegates not number of voters. Changing the rules after the fact would be cheating Trump out of the ability to campaign for popular vote. What if Hillary won the electoral college and Trump won the popular vote? Liberals would not be so excited anymore about changing the system.

The purpose of the electoral collage is to prevent the democratic process from being overrun by mob rule–like what leftists are trying to do now by rioting in hopes of overturning the election.

Another thing to consider: There was an extreme media bias behind Hillary plus she spent nearly twice as much as Trump in her campaign. Do you think she would have more or less votes if Trump matched her campaign spending and the media coverage was unbiased?

BTW: They just called Michigan for Trump–306 electoral votes now makes it a landslide election with the probability that he also won the popular vote in the final national tally.

JanS: Dems need to get their crap together and start representing the electorate instead of their own special interests–Proof of which can clearly be seen in the national election results. Here is what “racist, white supremacist, nazi fascist, womanizing, hate mongering, war hawk, islamo-homo-phobic traitor to the leftist cause” Azealia Banks had to say about the Dems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdQB8rOQ69g

Voter suppression is a real thing, especially in the South and Texas. Voter fraud, however, is another figment of the Republican mainstream and He Who Shall Not Be Named. Voter fraud always has been and always will be a ghost because it serves the purpose of disenfranchising the minorities who vote Democratic. BTW, since this election was rigged according to HWSNBN, where are his complaints now? Haven’t heard boo about this lie since Tuesday for some reason.

i have heard all of the conventional wisdom and rationalizations from people who did not prioritize equality for all in this election…

but the exit polls don’t exactly back those assumptions up.

“She won women 18 to 29 years old 63 percent to 31 percent; support was more evenly split among men in the same age group, 46 percent for Clinton to 42 percent for Trump.”

in spite of this article’s focus on women..
there is no demographic except that of young men in which Hillary won the majority of the male vote.. unless it pops up somewhere in the hispanic of black vote.. i couldn’t find an article which gave a more complete breakdown of blacks and latinos or asians according to sex.

but this link does provide more detailed information

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/2016-election/exit-polls/

young voters are far more likely to be independents than older voters.. which challenges the twin assumption.. she didn’t pull the millennials and she didn’t pull the independents…

i couldn’t find detailed gender information on those who identified as independents either but i am guessing it is consistent with other demographics..

Clinton Couldn’t Win Over White Women

On top of that.. if you look at exit polls and then at election results you will find that the only states in which they match up are those with a verifiable paper trail connected to each individual voter… those states with mail in ballots.

i am pretty sure those are also the states with the highest participation numbers…

this wasn’t a problem of Hillary not connecting with the voters…
it’s clear she connected with those voters who prioritized equality for all because they were part of a class of voters that is treated unequally..
it is also clear that she connected well with educated voters.. the exception being educated male voters…

it is clear that pre-election voter suppression affected the vote outcome significantly in Trump’s favor… as well as the limited number of polling places and long lines in urban voting stations and easy accessibility in rural.

the only way we could have won this election is if men who had a lessor stake in equality had jointed the fight.

it’s clear they either stayed home.. voted independent or voted Trump.

Now. you can spin that any way you want to.. I have been watching the spin doctors with a heavy heart for the past week.. but the numbers don’t lie…

the story they tell is not a pretty one.

as for what will happen in the future… as long as Republicans have control of our voting systems.. we will have an uphill battle..

JoB: Mishandling classified information and lying under oath at a congressional herring is a crime unless you redefine the word “crime” to not include breaking criminal laws.

Since Hillary will no longer have control over the AG, then they will be free to investigate and prosecute on whatever charges. I have a lot more faith in the law without the Clinton mob having top-down influence.
