Thank you for reaching out. This is an important topic for all communities and anyone who is a parent or in any way connected to a child.

Just to consider, this is a good event to send notice to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program if you are able (https://www.bbbsps.org/NetCommunity/sslpage.aspx).

Having been involved as a “Big” for a number of years in the past, there are likely many parents and supporters and “Littles/Bigs” that would gain from hearing Carlos’s words.

Thank you for starting this thread, will try to be there. This touches a big chord for me personally, and I appreciate that you are posting on this topic and sending word out.

The reason I got involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program involved a shooting in W Sea a number of years ago. A child that had gotten out of his gang and was going so very far in the W Sea community. His grades had improved immensely, he was the ping pong champ at a local community center, and he was gaining so much.

This young boy and his life that ended were my motivation to get involved finally.

His life shouldn’t have ended the way it did.

His end of life had an impact, trust me.

It was absolutely not without some kind of positive.

DBP, from your perspective, is Carlos’s talk one that would be appropriate for younger children, teens and parents alike to attend?

Also, whether they have or know a child at risk or not?

Hi Kootch. I still think the Supreme Court is OK. I am not happy with all of the frivolous lawsuits and activism clogging up the lower courts. That is broken and needs reform.

Redblack. In the Preamble the term, “Promote the General Welfare” does not mean the Federal Government should provide healthcare. No matter how you feel, and I have empathy, believe me, it is not constitutional. The Administration wants to call it a tax. If considered a tax it may slip under the door and found constitutional, but we know it is not a tax.

Also, I have for the past three years been on and off health care plans. Medical Services are much cheaper when you are not on a plan, but major health problems are super duper expensive. Lets see. I did use COBRA briefly, but COBRA is EXPENSIVE!!!!!, then went to Lifewise, then I went to an HMO. I could have qualified for some of the State Plans for a bit but did not.

No, insurance should have been for high dollar issues, operations, costly medications and not for every day exams etc. This is where the medical profession and the insurance companies have screwed the consumer.

In our state children of families with lower incomes can get Apple Health. Adults of lower income can get on the States Insurance plans. SCHIP is available across the nation in all states. I know it is not perfect. But the States are the engines that must drive healthcare. That is also a difference between Romneycare and Obamacare. State vs Federal. Not that I am in full support of plans that require all to pay. In fact I seem to remember the Federal Government not allowing insurance companies to be in every state. Why? Now if that has changed, good.

Finally, Obamacare steals our rights. It is a life controlling document that gives so much power to HHS. Remember the little girl whose lunch was deemed not appropriate and was given chicken nuggets? Obamacare is about control. Seniors will be thrown aside. In fact contraceptives for non retirement people will be considered more important than medications for the “non-productive” members of society.

I didn’t vote on it, but the people who did didn’t read it either.

Update: Shots fired at Westwood Village; no one hurt; schools take precautionary steps

Nobody was hurt, at least. I have to say thanks to our original tipster on this, as we were nowhere near a scanner at the time and since no one was hurt, it didn’t appear on the 911 log. And as we scrambled to figure out what was really happening and the best way to deploy our resources, in came the text from our son, a Sealth student, saying they were in shelter in place/lockdown/etc. That was BEFORE all the other Sealth and Denny parents who e-mailed, posted on FB, etc. It really is a collaboration .. you tell us something seems to be going on, we do our best to find out what, and it goes from there … TR

That the Marines did not comply with SPS policy is a breach of trust that should not have happened. However, the greater tragedy is that Seattle Public Schools has largely failed to live up to their own academic vision of “improving academic achievement for all students and ensuring that all students graduate from high school prepared for college, careers, and life”. All Washington State high school students must prepare themselves for “High School & Beyond” as a requirement for graduation. It is a wonderful thing to see a young person take charge of his/her own life and future. They all need much encouragement along the way to reach their goal. Students looking forward to going to college have many opportunities to speak to college recruiters and are not discouraged from doing so. There are no “counter-college recruiters” present to remind them that most of their college’s Freshman class will fail to complete a degree and will still owe money on student loans. No one will be there to tell them about the sexual victimization of college women (college campuses host large concentrations of young women who are at greater risk for rape and other forms of sexual assault than women in the general population or in a comparable age group – https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/182369.pdf ). No one will be there to wonder why their parents would send them off to risk being involved in binge drinking (http://www.collegedrinkingprevention.gov/statssummaries/snapshot.aspx). And rightly so…young people need to be encouraged to pursue their dream and learn how to do so. But, those students in Seattle Schools who legitimately desire a career in the military will be subject to Seattle Public School-endorsed ridicule and bullying by people with a political agenda or people bitter about their own experiences with the military (Captain Ahabs pursuing their white whale to the death). These students’ dreams and desires are not encouraged at all, just the opposite. Seattle Public School policy should address their vision of equal encouragement but that will require district leaders with the strength to stand up for all of their students.

Nonetheless, cats are mysterious creatures. Maybe this one teleported. So I share with you the story and photo sent by Arielle. It’s hard to confirm as news, but it’s certainly discussable, so I’m sharing it here for starters, starting with the photo Arielle sent after we asked for one in a followup exchange …

I always said that until I personally saw him run over or something, I would assume he was alive because he was such a fighter. But two years passed and I never saw him.

Cut to this weekend, when I returned to my house in West Seattle to prepare the place for new renters. On Saturday I was sitting out front, doing some weeding, when I saw a cat coming up the street. I took a second look and it struck me how familiar it looked. I called the name Elliott, just on a whim, and the cat looked up in recognition! He ran to me and jumped on my lap.

I know this sounds completely insane but I swear it’s true. I still wasn’t sure so I turned him over to look at his belly. He had the same face and markings, but most importantly a scar on his side from a fight five years ago with a neighborhood cat.

I totally freaked out at that point. Elliott spent the rest of the day following me around, sitting with me, hanging out in the house. My neighbor told me that he had shown up in the neighborhood maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago. Essentially, my cat travelled over a thousand miles in two years to return to his home in West Seattle.

I have no idea how he did it, if I hadn’t held him myself I would never have believed it. He managed to cross freeways, the Columbia River, who knows how. He’s skinnier, and starved for attention, but healthy.

I took pictures as I knew how crazy it sounds. He clearly wants to live in WS rather than LA so my renters will feed him and I will take care of him when I’m home.

Anyway, I know how incredibly improbable it is but it’s 100% true. Just goes to show you should never give up hope and never underestimate the miracles and tenacity of nature.<<<<

No, Spring Hill is at Hudson. Is this 5232 California SW? It was demolished a few years back. Here’s a side note we had about it in March 2008.

Pre-teardown house put to good use

The daily permits file had a “get started” power pole permit last week so I suspected they were FINALLY starting at the site.

Very confusingly addressed, as many of these projects are. Finally found the main permit, addressed as 5230:
