Elyse: Maybe you’d be interested in hosting an Italian soccer player? Please see below for a fantastic opportunity:

    https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/host-families-needed-for-womens-italian-soccer-players

Otherwise, there might be opportunities to converse with them while they are here. You can follow them at http://www.acseattle.com and might even want to “sponsor” the team for tickets to their games?

    Okay, here’s the WSB article.

From that, it sounds like they were planning on a name change, and change of menu, but the fact that “next month” is referenced, tells me there was no interim shutdown planned.

Must not have been my day for riding a bike, because on my ride home I got “nudged” by a truck on Alaskan Way (where the construction is happening near Main St).

Close call, but sure wish there was more room on the shoulders where the temporary fencing is. Or it would be nice if there weren’t so many single-occupancy gas-powered 4-wheel vehicles around.

Just another reminder to please pay attention when driving 2+ ton (killing?) machines. I blame myself in this case though because I assumed the fencing gave consistent spacing along the shoulder for the entire distance of Alaskan Way.

Just a friendly reminder for drivers to please stop at the appropriate line and not block the bike box at Andover & Delridge.

    http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/bikeboxes.htm

The weather is getting nicer and May is bike-to-work month, so there will be lots more people riding bikes. Keeping it safe for everyone is the primary goal. I believe it is illegal to block the bike box (see SMC 11.50.320), and I believe it is a $124 fine.

There wasn’t a major incident this morning, but I was asked “what my problem was” when I got in front of a car blocking the bike box (so I was partially in the crosswalk). As I told the driver that he is supposed to stop behind the bike box, he proceeded to tell me that “bikes need to go the speed limit”. As we turned, he called me an @$$hole.

    https://vimeo.com/64816510

And yesterday I almost got t-boned by a girl who slammed on her brakes (at Fauntleroy & Alaska) as I was going across a crosswalk. I had the pedestrian signal. She had the red light. And was on her phone.

So please…all I ask is for drivers to pay attention and follow the rules.

Thanks, and have a joyous day! It’s so nice outside!

Just for accuracy’s sake, since we have covered this one since a couple of WSB readers first pointed out the unannounced cameras’ installation:

The stated/procured purpose was NOT to deter/solve/fight street crime. It was “port security.” This is where much of the hue and cry originated once the camera plan came to light two and a half months ago – not all from people opposed to the idea of cameras; many were concerned about the fact the installation was done without the public being told/asked first. How that happened has never really been explained thoroughly, aside from one police official saying somebody somewhere dropped the proverbial ball. They have continued to address public concerns as if they were only concerns about privacy.

Once it was explained they were purchased through a “port security” grant from the Department of Homeland Security – authorized last year without any mention of cameras in recreational/residential areas – the questions included, what is “port security” about a camera over the Fauntleroy ferry dock bus stop or the Statue of Liberty Plaza (including cameras that originally were turned away from the water)?

SPD eventually, at City Council/Mayoral request, gave some briefings and said that street-crime fighting would be a benefit (along with a variety of others).

Also, though somehow they’re being referred to as the “Alki cameras,” just wanted to remind folks that they are not just Alki. There’s one in Admiral, one in Fauntleroy, and then dozens more slated for elsewhere in the city, some installed, some not yet, stretching to the Ballard vicinity. One of our original reports included a reference to an SFD tech official quoted last year as saying it could/would eventually be part of an even bigger citywide system. It’s all tied to a wireless communication system – designed to work, SPD said, with or without the cameras – that will enable public-safety personnel to communicate even if regular wireless networks get overwhelmed.

We don’t editorialize, so this is not a pro/con statement. Just the background. Our coverage archive (reverse chronological), for anyone interested, is at:

    https://westseattleblog.com/category/seattle-police-surveillance-cameras

    -Tracy

P.S. And if anyone wants to voice an opinion, pro/con or otherwise, the mayor has yet to announce his decision on activating them – last time we asked, they said they were awaiting more public meetings to be scheduled by SPD – so I’m sure he’s still interested in hearing thoughts from the citizenry.

    The Beauty of the Rain

    By Dar Williams

And you know the light is fading all too soon

You’re just two umbrellas one late afternoon

You don’t know the next thing you will say

This is your favorite kind of day

It has no walls, the beauty of the rain

is how it falls, how it falls, how it falls . . .

EdSane, here is just one comment from WSB, corroborating what Spring Chicken posted:

West Seattle Thursday: Looking closely at the day ahead

Even though the post is a couple years old, it is still factual and relevant, except for references of time factors.

I’m really going to miss all the ads and talk shows and soap operas.

And the gripping live news coverage of Easter Egg hunts and dogs that get stuck in trees. Who’s going to fill that void? Some computer thingie? Psssh! Don’t THINK so!!

And where will I go of a rainy evening when I need to sit there in the comfort of my own home, swilling cheap beer for hours as I watch the unfolding drama of fake reality, jiggly boobs, and gratuitous non-stop violence?

(And that’s just the football games.)

No . . . so sorry to have contradict you again, sir, but apologizing on behalf of others actually makes one MORE of an ass, not less, because it implies that the person for whom one is apologizing is somehow more of an ass even than oneself, thereby making oneself look rather good by comparison.

Which is the very Everest of Assiness.

I’m sorry, I don’t get to read all the threads and had no idea when this came in earlier that it was an “as mentioned in the forum” photo as opposed to “if you want to use it for a daily calendar highlight” photo, but I just came in to check and make sure everything’s OK so here’s the pic:

    Beautiful song by John Prine

    Yeah, his voice is crap

    His musical skill is limited

The tune is pure hillbilly country

And yet . . . it’s one of the most elegant political commentaries ever penned.

    The Great Compromise

I knew a girl who was almost a lady

She had a way with all the men in her life

Every inch of her blossomed in beauty

And she was born on the Fourth of July

Well she lived in an aluminum house trailer

And she worked in a juke-box saloon

And she spent all the money I give her

Just to see the old man in the moon

    Chorus:

I used to sleep at the foot of old glory

And awake in the dawn’s early light

    But much to my surprise

    When I opened my eyes

I was a victim of the great compromise

Well we’d go out on Saturday evenings

To the drive-in on Route 41

And it was there that I first suspected

That she was doin’ what she’d already done

She said “Johnny, won’t you get me some popcorn”

And she knew I had to walk pretty far

And as soon as I passed through the moonlight

She hopped into a foreign sports car

    (repeat chorus)

Well you know I could have beat up that fella

But it was her that had hopped into his car

Many times I’d fought to protect her

But this time she was goin’ too far

Now some folks they call me a coward

’cause I left her at the drive-in that night

But I’d ruther have names thrown at me

Than to fight for a thing that ain’t right

    (repeat chorus)

Now she writes all the fellows love letters

Saying “Greetings, come and see me real soon”

And they go and line up in the barroom

And spend the night in that sick woman’s room

But sometimes I get awful lonesome

And I wish she was my girl instead

But she won’t let me live with her

And she makes me live in my head

I listened to this song maybe a twenty times before I got it.

And then I was like: “Oh.”

Maude, I think it’s what you grew up with. I love doughy potstickers and think the skimpy goyza are not even worth eating. I eat out A LOT and not every Chinese place has everything I like, so I hunt out the tasty specialties and don’t expect every place to do everything as I like it. Who else has the original WS “restaurant review” forums posting from 2007 as one of their favorite bookmarks :-) https://westseattleblog.com/2007/08/west-seattle-dishes-to-die-for

Just recently attended an informational meeting to host players from Italy who will be in Seattle this summer to play for AC Seattle. We also had the opportunity to meet the coach and team captain. Please see the original info here:

New women’s soccer team playing in West Seattle this summer; host families, local players needed

As well as the team website here: http://acseattle.com/

We are still in need of a few more host families and I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have here. (You can also contact Katie Milne directly who is the player coordinator and her email is in the first story). Here’s a few more details though:

Players are aged 18-23 and will be practicing weekdays likely from 10-noon at either Delridge or SW/Sealth Complex. They will also be taking English language classes approximately 3 afternoons per week. They are scheduled to play 10 games in June alone. They will be arriving the last week of May/first week of June and the season finishes the last week of July.

Ideally host families would be able to help with some transportation although there will be coordination with all the families for carpooling opportunities as well as assistance with using the bus. Although the players will be very busy, they are anxious to interact with your family and be included in your activities as available.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to host and hope you might be interested, too!

Most of what goes through there is commercial traffic, including heavily laden barges. That’s not the case for, say, the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

More here, the last time this question came up: https://westseattleblog.com/2007/11/west-seattle-low-bridge-open-and-shut-case
