akwesasneParticipantAccording to the SDOT website
http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/bridgeopenings.htm
The lower bridge is allowed to open on demand, no matter if it is rush hour. This rule does not apply to the other major bridges in and around Seattle –why? Why do the other bridges have rules around rush hour openings but the lower Spokane street bridge is “open on demand”? Answer s anyone?

smokeycretin9Participantbecause the city hates car drivers. this will only increase traffic getting in and out of West Seattle.
Get on your bike and be a good Seattlite.

datamuseParticipantMost of what goes through there is commercial traffic, including heavily laden barges. That’s not the case for, say, the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

sam-cParticipantwhether you’re on a bike or in a car, you can’t get over the low bridge if it’s open

skeeterParticipantVery frustrating for those of us with commutes to SODO in which the “upper bridge” is not an option.
It seems most efficient to me to not allow openings during the peak hour (7:30 to 8:30?) each morning, but smarter people than me disagree.

KimberleyParticipantHow is the upper bridge not an option if you work in SoDo (unless you walk/run/bike)?

skeeterParticipantDepends what part of SODO I suppose. But I’m on Harbor Island. So crossing on the upper bridge then turning around and trying to get back on Harbor Island from the East is very difficult with all the truck traffic. It’s shorter just to wait the 15 minutes for the bridge to re-open.

sbreParticipantMarine vehicle have the right of way, regardless of time of day.
They can’t stop as quickly and easily as cars.
And remember, don’t shoot the messenger!!!
