    Hi Bonnie,

I just checked with the teacher and asked her if the parents of these kids speak English and she said they all do, only 1 parent speaks broken English so the language wasn’t the problem. And yes, it makes it more difficult not having emails addresses to send invites.

I plan on being there. Being Superbowl Sunday, I’m sure my husband, the life-long Giants fan, will be otherwise occupied. :)

I have the BEST doctor on earth, but she is in Madison Valley (on Madison by the arboretum entrance)

Her name is Lisa Davison, and she is at Middleway Medicine.

I’ve told at least 3 previous doctors (2 GPs and a couple of specialists) that I felt something was “off” and could they check my vitamin levels, for about 6 years now. Everyone did a CBC and called it good.

This doctor immediately, without my even mentioning the feeling that something wasn’t right, tested vitamin and nutrient levels along with the CBC. She also added tests for hormone levels and thyroid function based on my reporting that i have to eat 800 calories a day to lose weight and no more than 1200 to maintain. Her first words were “that is NOT a normal metabolism!” Other doctors had questioned my truthfulness, accused me of not knowing how much I was eating (I log it at fitday.com) etc.

Well lo and behold, the tests came back that my vitamin D levels were nearly undetectable, and my free testosterone was high, and my thyroid wasn’t functioning correctly. Go figure… She immediately put me on therapeutic doses of vitamin D, which makes a world of difference!

After only my first visit, the receptionist remembers me if I call, and asks how I’m doing. The office is also online, so you can email her if you have a non-urgent issue or question.

I cannot recommend her any more highly.

Several folks wrote in the Seattle Freeze discussion topic that they would like to get together with interested West Seattle Blog afficionados and un-freeze the Seattle reputation for frostiness.

A few of us agreed to get the party started and you are welcome to join us…

“Let’s meet at 4:00, Sunday February 3rd at C&P Coffee Company on California. Jacqueline Leigh is performing until 5:00 and after that we can pull out the board games. I’ll bring an electronic CatchPhrase game that is a great hit at my house.

I listened to Jacqueline’s Myspace music and she sounds nice & easy.

    http://www.myspace.com/jacquelineleighmusic”

Yes, we figured out after we set the date that indeed this is Superbowl Sunday. This may have been a Freudian slip on my part. Since four of us have put it on our calendars, we’re sticking with this date and hope that more chances to un-freeze will follow.

    What do you think?

Hi, not sure if this has been asked yet, I would like to find a new doctor. I’m currently going to Seattle WS, but for the most part I’m tired of the treatment from the staff. I would like to find someplace that has pleasant people that want to help. Thanks

My husband and I run a small, local general contracting firm – TJW Construction, Inc. specializing in custom remodel and garden hardscape design. We have been in business since 1991 and are fully licensed, bonded and insured. Tom has been in commercial and residential construction for over 20 years and is a wonderful craftsman; he can also perform design services if required. If you would like to learn more about our services or see pictures of Tom’s work, e-mail us at tjwconstcoinc@mac.com. Tom and Jane Watson

I was wondering if anyone was currently participating, or would be interested in participating, in groups aimed at developing individual and neighborhood solutions for the energy challenges society will be facing.

Currently, I’ve taken up an organic garden and intend on doing so again this year. I still have a lot to learn as last year was a mix of successes and failures. I would also like to learn the proper techniques for composting. Anybody interested in sharing labor, knowledge, and ideas?

I’m also interested in techniques and skills such as food preparation, energy conservation, and bicycle maintenance just to name a few. I’ve spent some time researching and experimenting on my own, but would enjoy sharing ideas, knowledge and tools with people who are doing similar things.

I second the recommendation for Head To Toe (just across from Admiral Theater). The environment, people and services are all top rate!

Head to Toe in Admiral does great pedicures. There are also a few places on California but I can’t think of the names right now!

Have you tried a brush called a Furminator? Check it out online. A little spendy, but a bit cheaper at Costco or Amazon.com. Many groomers use it. It doesn’t work for all types of coats, not poodles or terriers that have to be stripped, etc., but works absolute wonders on most straight coats. The pictures on their website of dogs surrounded by heaps of hair are accurate. It does a miraculous job on our Lab, who is always shedding, and I have seen it do incredibly well on a lot of other dogs. The site lists breeds of dogs that it works on. It does say that it will work on a sheltie, but my sheltie’s breeder recommended against it because it could break the hairs. But a sheltie is a rough coated dog, and I think that is the difference.

I just came back from listening to Madeleine Albright talk about why she supports Hilary Clinton for President and she said something that really resonated with me. She said, “i want my president to be confident but not certain.” In other words, she wants a President who doesn’t always think he/she is right and is open to adjusting his/her opinion based on current information.

She also said that she thinks a cabinet ought to be full of diverse opinions so that a President isn’t always hearing his/her own opinions parroted back at him/her.

She also stated that she (Madeleine Albright) thinks we should be out of Iraq.

After hearing her speak and witnessing the humility with which she approaches the immense problems this nations faces, i have to say that i trust her judgment.

If she believes Hilary will meet those conditions, then i think it is probably a good bet that she will. All the more reason for me to vote for her.

Another thought just occured to me, and it may be a bit of a long shot, but you never know when the Classic Car Gods may be smiling down upon you. ;) I remember running across old license plates, specifically, so likely frames as well, at antique shops.

I seem to recall at least one of the shops up in Snohomish having old plates.

Wes, i suspect you and i have similar beliefs… up to a point. and yes, they frame how we look at things.

i will admit that having been raised in a church, i tend to evaluate political action from a Christian viewpoint… but not from a Christian framework. In other words, i ask myself, “was that a Christian thing to do?” … Not, “does that person frame their argument in Christian terminology”.

When we focus so much on a candidate’s religion we focus on the latter.. how they frame their campaign promises… not whether they will behave in a Christian way.

Answering how i define truth is even more difficult. i don’t believe that anything but personal truth exists where belief is concerned.

and possibly not where “scientific” truth is concerned either… since scientific truth is gained by finding a way to prove what you set out to prove.

i don’t believe you can make any decision about truth without disclosure of all of the assumptions that the truth you are evaluating was based on and finding any circumstance in which you can even discover absolute disclosure is almost impossible.

who was it that said something to the effect that truth was hard to define but that you know it when you see it? works for me. You look at the facts and you make your best guess based on both your source material and your experience… and of course on your estimation of how much the experts you rely on understand their material.

Whew! pretty philosophical, huh. you might want to know how i walk down the street each day trusting the sidewalk to stay put with such a slippery grasp on the truth.. and some days i wonder myself…

But what i know is that i can trust my experience of sidewalk because i have gained it the good old fashioned way: i listened to my elders, i decided they didn’t know everything, i tested the sidewalk’s limits, i tested my own limits and i walked. And of course, i keep testing my own limits because they change and that is life…

I can’t speak for Ken, but the problem i have with evangelicals is that they think they know or can discover by some set of their own rules what my relationship with god is and they judge me based on their assumptions. And what is worse is that they do so without speaking with me and asking questions. They base their assumptions on how i dress, how i speak (ok, i confess, i have been known to swear) and what my politics are. Like most assumptions we make about people based on superficial evidence, they are most often wrong.

i don’t judge others because they choose or don’t choose to worship their god their way. In fact, most of the time i don’t have a clue what their personal religion is… it has often caught me unaware. Just as i am not terribly curious about race. ethnicity.. now that interests me but because of customs, not bloodlines.

speaking of customs, i am off to hear madeleine… an interesting woman, i hope. because my priorities are with thought over appearance, i will go in jeans and a sweater… i wonder what assumptions that will create;)

This doesn’t have to do with the RSVP issue, which I agree is very sad.

I noticed that you said only one parent/child “bothered to show up at the rink.” I don’t know of any ice rinks in this area and I would have been surprised, as a parent, to be expected to transport my child to (and from) Renton or Lynnwood for a party. This might be especially difficult for some of the Roxhill families, for various reasons.

LOL about the lattemom comparison to cinnamon! Evite is an electronic invitation website where you can create your own invitation for events and parties…really great. And you can see who actually viewed your invitation so if they never respond, you can give them grief for not RSVP’ing. Which a lot of people don’t bother with. It really is as easy as selecting Yes, No, Maybe, click. No excuses!

Please tell me what we did wrong: I went to our daughters school (Roxhill) and delivered cupcakes and invites for the entire class for ice skating. We did not receive not 1 call to RSVP for the party, only 1 girl and her Mom bothered to show up at the rink. What is with people! We wrote our phone number on each and every invitation. This is so rude! We will instead get to know the kids in her swim class and not bother to intite the kids from Roxhill since their parents can’t bother to call or show up at the party. Too bad because alot of the kids were excited to skate for the first time and our daughter was all excited about her upcoming party. I am fully aware there are more important things going on in the world now, but to not even call that is rude!! How darn hard is i to pick up the phone and call?

We tried the neighborhood school, it didn’t work out and we had no playdates, not 1! We left that school because of academics and now our daughter has moved up a grade since being at Roxhill, but now we find there most likely won’t be any parties or playdates.

Also, what is with the schools having all these diversification parties to celebrate other traditional celebrations but in an elementary school no holiday (we say Christmas in our house!), no observation to Thanksgivings Day, and most likely no Valentines Day party and so on?

    Shame on you Roxhill parents!

Also, on your blog about the Seattle Freeze, I have had more of the freeze from other parents!

Just tried Yummy Teriyaki – it was aweful!!!

I asked for spicy chicken and stir fried veggies, spent about 10 minutes and the lady behind the counter said she understood.

After about a 15 minute wait (4 other people in the restaurant)I was served about 8 pieces of chicken, not only was it not spicy but cold. This to go aling with about two cups of cold dried out cabbage with some kind of disgusting dressing on it.

When I asked the man cooking he replied that the restaurant did not have vegatables. Thinking that there was a misnderstanding I pointed to all the color pictures showing meat and vegatable dishes. He just kept repeating that they did not serve dishes with vegatables. When I asked him for a refund he refused as he did my request to heat up the cold non spicy chicken.

Yummy Teriyaki -terrible service, terible food, with a heeping does of arragance and attitude. I travel a lot and have found better teriyaki in Wichita and Oklahoma City. Born and raised in WS and still looking for good Teriyaki and Chinese food!

Not in West Seattle, but Ballard Camera does a nice job with passport photos. They are digital so you can review it before they print. also you can have glasses on without getting glare. Besides the size needing to be particular, i believe the kind of paper it is printed on also matters – must handle heat.

Good for you Ken!! How clever that your grandson uses the “click” of his seatbeat tso you can start the car, that is cute! I wish more peope paid attention to this issue and realy thought before placing their kids in cars.

Our daughter is 7 and knows she will be in the backseat until she is 13 and she gladly gets into her booster seat.

Hi there. I’m looking for a good hair salon that does balayage. Anybody know of one in WS? I’ve been going to Gene Juarez for years and it’s just so expensive for cut, color, and style.

    Thanks!
