I understand from a Seattle Times news article today that 17 year olds can vote at the caucus if, and only if that 17 y.o. will be 18 years old by election day in November.

In my mind, it’s as sexist to vote *for* Hillary just because she’s a woman as it is to *not* vote for her because she’s a woman. And she was on the board of Wal-Mart, for heaven’s sake…how much more corporatist and Republican can you get?

We need someone who with a track record of taking on corporate greed–and winning. The middle class is slowly vanishing (inflation, lack of pensions/retirement, stagnating wages, health care expenses, concentration of wealth, etc.) We need someone to tell corporate America, lobbyists, and the ultra-rich that they can’t always have their way.

One of the many reasons John Edwards earned my support. And I honestly think he would be doing better in the caucuses if the media wasn’t creating/emphasizing a horserace between Obama and Clinton, effectively shutting Edwards out.

    WSMom –

West Seattle Nursery has manure. As for ‘greens’ added to the compost heap they include any fresh cut grasses or leaves too. I follow Katherine’s slow method.

Sue: The link above might answer some of your questions. Sorry you will miss the caucus. The caucus process is harder on absentee issues in this state than it is in a few others if I remember correctly.

Here is the detailed answer for those who might have to miss the caucus but want to participate anyway.

From the FAQ on the Dem site (since they say it better than I do…

Can I vote absentee or by proxy in the Caucuses? No. There are only three reasons you can vote in the caucuses without being there. If you serve in the military, have a medical condition that prevents your attendance, or for religious reasons cannot attend your caucus, you can request an affidavit from the State Party. To find this affadavit, go to http://www.wa-democrats.org/caucusinfo and download the Caucus Surrogate Affadavit Form. This must be returned to the State Party by February 1st. No one else can vote without being there. You can become a delegate without attending your caucus. College students registered at their home address but living away from home cannot vote but can become a delegate using the process described below.

    Link to FAQhttp://www.wa-democrats.org/index.php?page=display&id=266

The caucus has some strict time allotments and some that are soft. In general normal sized precincts will be done in about two hours.

Getting there early or at least on time will be best especially for those in large precincts since the sign-in process can become a bottleneck when turnout is as big as expected.

next: ok your precinct has no PCO. Yes that means one of your neighbors will have to volunteer at the caucus to run it. They will then appoint a secretary and a tally clerk. (assuming there are at least three people from your precinct)

More details and a You tube video of the step by step are at the state party page above.

Even though you might have to miss the caucus, if your precinct has no PCO, then you should consider becoming the PCO yourself. Candidate organizations urge their supporters to become PCO’s where possible. You can be appointed after filling out a short form at a district meeting and run for the position next year. It is a rare precinct that has contested PCO elections since it is an unpaid party position, but this year also included replacing a 34th district Senator and a Rep in which case ONLY PCO’s were allowed to vote for the replacements.

Here is the PCO handbook in html format

    http://www.democracyforwashington.com/civicspace-0.5/?q=pcohandbook

For more info on caucus history,

this article is pretty easy to read.

I just noticed the last two questions…

    Add

Kids that are not likly to cry or run around and/or get bored are probably fine. Our grandson would be banned after a few minutes.

I think the SCC page states something like.. well let me go look at it…

Washington State residents who are not qualified to register to vote because of

age or citizenship shall be allowed to participate in the platform and resolution

discussions, but not vote on the election of delegates or alternates, nor may they

be elected as delegates or alternates

I think that indicates that any interested student smart enough to be interested in presidential politics, can not only attend, but take part in the discussions and even speak for a candidate if they like, if time allows and there is no representative of that candidate hogging the discussion time.

Go to http://www.wa-democrats.org/ for all the details normal people can stand. And it your really really interested here is a

pdf of delegate selection document in all it’s obtuse glory

This is the official document, or one of them that is used as a resource for those running the caucus. There is also a Caucus Hotline at (206) 583-4345 or e-mail grassroots@wa-democrats.org. This us a statewide number. I am awaiting a bit more clarity on an age related question myself. More on that later.

    Sue’s question in next post.

Unfortunately I cannot go to the caucus as I need to be out of town for something I can’t change. But I’m curious, what exactly does one do at a caucus? How long is it? From all that I’ve read about it, I’m really not clear about the event. I notice that my particular precinct has no leader listed – what would that mean if I were going? Does someone need to step up on the spot to take charge? And if they don’t? I’d love to understand a bit more about it for next time. I came from a non-caucus state, and this is my first presidential election here in WA, so this is very new to me.

Ken – Are kids under 18 allowed to come to the caucus? The FAQ page on the WA Dem page said unregistered voters can participate but not vote, but it didn’t specifically say whether younger children can attend. My middle schooler is very interested and pretty informed about the political process, and is especially into tracking the presidential election process. I would love for him to be exposed to the caucus (first year for us to attend) and he is very eager to come. Thanks for any info…

Hi all! I agreed with so many of the posts here, I wouldn’t even know where to start with a reply.

I’m new to WS (LOVE it so much more than my old neighborhood), and am actually noticing more friendliness out here, but I definitely know all about the “Seattle Freeze”. After spending a short time on the east coast in 2006, I know conduct experiments like those discussed here where I purposly make eye contact while out walking my dog, or say hello, or say “Merry Christmas” in December just to see what reaction I get. It’s interesting.

Anyway, I’m up for the Anti-Freeze group, but just not on Feb 3rd :-) Maybe we make this a once-a-month thing?

The only reasonable excuse for doing that is if she was really hot and had a short skirt on or something to that effect, otherwise that’s pretty stupid.

you should let your children be alone in public when you feel they are ready to handle situations that make them uncomfortable in public. i don’t think there is a set age for that.

children will take their cue from you… so if you show them that people in the greater world often behave in ways that aren’t appropriate in your home and that the best way to deal with those people is to ignore them, they will be ready to walk alone sooner rather than later.

but, you knew that, didn’t you?

perhaps coffee shops and sandwich shops with free wifi should investigate creating a wifi area with accessible plugs for those who need them. I am sure customers like sue’s husband would appreciate them.

That might free up some area for customers who might actually like to interact to sit close enough to one another to have conversation.

And i second the request for more non-coffee choices in coffee houses. Mexican chocolate sounds wonderful to me.. tho not so sure about the chicory…

I tend to drink my coffee out of a cup and put my food on a plate (sometimes a bowl — depends on the food). I rarely eat directly off a table. So feel free to stick whatever part of your body you’d like on tables I’m eating at. Just don’t step in my coffee cup or place your behind on my plate and I’m cool.

    Jimmy G, Al, others,

The 54 serves a larger transit ridership because it goes through more neighborhoods than the 21. Metro chose the 54 for reasons which included the overall population served. Metro also knows that the 21 is due upgrades.

The new Rapid Ride service is “new” money and as soon as it’s implemented, circa 2011, the existing 54 service hours can be completely redirected here in WS. That’s probably enough hours to expand the 21 to 20 minute service, lengthen the service day for the 22, and probably increase the 128 to 20 minute service also. That’s what Metro plans to go over next year, this year they’re working on the alignment and station locations. That’s where the energy should be focused now.

Does RR improve the 54 service corridor? or does it improve some other service corridor? The present alignment includes the option of intersecting the RR service with the 21 or saving maybe three minutes and getting on the Fauntleroy Causeway directly. Most of us on the advisory board are arguing for the intersect even though it will “waste” 3 minutes. Anyway, send your comments in and attend one of the meetings next week – WSB has it on the events page. Metro is listening, honestly!

This is where I pop in and suggest Sustainable West Seattle, which is meeting this coming Monday, Jan 28, at 7 pm at the main lodge at Camp Long. SWS has a whole sub-group relating to tilth, permaculture, and soil and vegetation management, along with energy, water and waste, transportation, and green building. Website is still in the early, simple, stage but gives some idea of the group in general. That’s a place to both share and acquire information and each of these groups has a blog (some, more active than others). Just a thought…

Thanks, Velvet. Gregory, your group sounds like a great idea.

I love to talk gardening. I’m not a speed composter. All those rules you see are simply ways to make compost faster, and maybe to retain more nutrients. Basically, if you throw something on the ground, it’ll rot. Eventually. The busy woman method I worked out is: Mix green stuff (grass clippings, fresh weeds) with brown stuff (leaves, dead plants.) They compost faster if you can chop them. Strive for a tweedy look. Water in the summer when it dries out. Turn now and then. This fall’s leaves will be partly composted by summer, fully composted by the end of the summer.

Composting goes faster if you can add fresh horse, cow, chicken or rabbit manure, and if the pile or bin gets some sun. Never add cat or dog manure; they’re “cold” manures – they don’t heat up the pile and can spread pathogens.

I’d love to share seed with other people who start seeds under lights. I like to start a variety, but don’t have space to plant the whole package for every kind. I may have some extra currant tomato seed this year. I won’t know until I actually plant in late March.

A great place to get answers to your gardening questions is the Plant Answer Line at Elizabeth C. Miller Library, depts.washington.edu/hortlib/index.shtml. Call or email, if they don’t know, they look up the answer and get right back to you.

We are also a renters and to be fair i have to tell you that i just followed cinnamon’s link to affordable housing and it probably isn’t realistic.

depending upon the size of the house and the amenities (does it have a view, is it near a park, schools, are you going to allow pets, etc>>>) rents here are higher than those posted.

you might try housingmaps.. just put them in google. that is where i found our current rental.

I think a lot of people who are transferring into the area use that system. It works really well… as does a good old fashioned sign.

You might want to consider a real estate service if you aren’t going to want to manage the property yourself… they do charge a percentage of the rent as a fee, but they do most of the work screening renters and some of them even arrange repairs for you. Just check out the contracts really carefully.

Too bad i won’t be looking for another place for at least 6 months… good luck!

I was listening to NPR today and heard that Kucinich has decided to withdraw from the race.

I am truly sorry to hear that because whether he could win or not, i think he elevated the discussion by his presence.

He is making a formal announcement tomorrow that is supposed to include his desire to serve in Congress.

We need him there, but i shall miss him in this race all the same.

charlabob…maybe you should have been around when they were allowed in. I live just down the street from Jack in the Box, and when the kids take their lunch at 10:40am, both Safeway (still) and Jack in the Box were completely inundated with students. And, unfortunately, for the most part they weren’t exactly “thugs”, but they were/are inconsiderate “me”people. They will walk in front of your car crossing the street, defying you to hit them almost, and act as though they are the only people in the world (teenagers – lol)…and create havoc in these places. And I believe restuarants have the right to refuse service to whoever as long as it’s not race, sex, gender. If it’s troublemakers, I guess they can.

I have learned to not do shopping @ Safeway while the students are about…it’s just too difficult….

so this is behavior of the few affecting the many…

Shouldn’t kids generally be in school between 9 and 3? I wonder if it’s to prevent kids cutting school and hanging out in there. A lot of places in NY used to do that – I know a local mall wouldn’t let kids in without a parent during school hours.

JimmyG – I recently heard an interview on the radio that concurs with your theory. Bascially the scientist was saying that kids who are allowed to play in the dirt have healthier immune systems and have a lower incident rate for asthma as well as other serious ailments.

This morning I was enjoying a cup of java at a popular local coffee shop. A young woman came in, laptop under her arm, and found an empty table. She began looking around, apparently for an electrical outlet, but there was not one right there. For some reason she looked up high, and right at ceiling level there was an outlet. She climbed up onto a chair, but couldn’t reach it. So she stood up on the table—in a restaurant! After she plugged in her computer, she climbed back down again and walked to the counter to order her drink. As she passed by me I politely said that I didn’t think it was cool to stand on a table that people eat off. Her response was an airy “Oh, sorry.”

I know that tables in coffee shops do not get wiped off in between customers, so as I was leaving I described what had happened to the employee at the counter and suggested she wipe down the table after that young woman left (presumably she would be climbing up there again to unplug the computer later on). The employee thanked me and said she would.

Sometimes I can only marvel over self-indulgent people who don’t stop to consider the impact of their behavior upon others.

Anyhow, was I being a busybody?
