I think you may be on the right track in laying most of the blame on the school district, WSHSparent.
I thought of this when I made my earlier post, but didn’t say anything since I don’t have the info or facts to back it up.
I remember hearing earlier this year that SSD would be dropping the yellow bus service, and that METRO would be picking up the slack, but how much more notice than that, did METRO have?
Even if they had much earlier notice, it’s not so simple as firing up a few more buses. For one, the buses need to be available. And, so do the drivers. During the commute hours, both of those are likely stretched as far as they can be.
As I mentioned before, they might be able to use articulated coaches on the 128, but those would have to be pulled from other routes, and/or possibly shifted to other METRO bases. Pulling them off of other routes and replacing them with standard 40ft coaches, could negatively affect those other routes.
The only thing METRO may have been guilty of, is if they said “No problem. We can handle it.
But then again, being a public transit agency, they would not have been able to flat out refuse.
Mike
When I got on a #128 bus early this afternoon, the driver was upset because a student didn’t have his October bus pass. He pushed the issue and refused to move the bus until the student came up with the needed 25 cents, which I ended up giving him. I’ve heard that the lines are LONG for students at WSHS waiting to pick up their bus passes…can’t the school streamline that process?
Also, today my daughter’s friend got on a #128 around 3 p.m. and because of some rowdy kids letting off “stink” bombs, the police were called and she had to get off at a stop about a mile from her regular stop.
The parents/students are frustrated; the Metro drivers are frustrated; the adults who can’t get on a bus because it’s packed are frustrated! It seems to me that the Seattle School District has really dropped the ball on transportation and this is leaving the door open to all sorts of problems. I urge all the parents/students affected by this change to voice their concerns to the Superintendent of Seattle Schools, Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson (who will then shuffle it off to the Transportation Manager!!) You can email her at superintendent@seattleschools.org.
Who WILL take the responsibility for transporting our students safely and efficiently?
lol. I don’t think it’s the first ten from the same family. Correct me if I’m wrong, alkikidsplace. Also, this is technically a sale so it’s legit. to post.
Good luck. :)
Village Green, have you been recently? The Pearl is taking over and all that was interesting is being replaced by West Elm stores and yuppie wine tasting bars…alas I am afraid it it happening everywhere.
Man down to referencing the National Review, house how far you have fallen, thats like quoting the Onion at this point.
Serious I know your all LIBERALS BAAAAAAD THEY SPEND YOUR MONEY AFTER TAKING IT WITH TAXES.
So far all the republicans in office have done is spend even MORE money without funding it.
PS: I don’t necessarily care for liberals either but some of these OH MAN OBOMO IS A SMOKER AND TOOK MONEY FROM THIS ONE GUY retorts are pretty weak.
I will, roundthesound. I promise.
And don’t worry, I get my news from the Daily Show!
TheHouse,
Yes I do criticize Palin for her lack of foreign policy experience b/c she does not have any. She didnt even get her passport until last year.
Obama does have foreign policy experience
–Served on three U.S. Senate Committees: Foreign Relations; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans’ Affairs committees.
–Chaired the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on U.S./European Relations.
Furthermore, my commit above wasnt actually criticizing her experience. It was criticizing the fact that she cannot handle herself infront fo foreign leaders which is one of the most critical parts of the job.
Bush tried three seperate times to get both Fannie and Freddie under control. The dems blocked it. That is where the blame lies.
It’s all over Youtube, the Dems blatenely blocking the Reps attempts to examine in more detail.
It’s reactionary, yet customary here to blame Bush.
But you’d be wrong to do so. I think he tried to avert this many times and was blocked.
So now I hear people saying we need a social contract? We need to take care of people who bought houses they couldn’t afford? Let’s take care of the poor unfortunates who were duped by predatory lending practices? We need to bail out companies that loaned money to people with little or no chance to pay off the loans? We need to refinance loans of people who took loans they couldn’t afford, had slim chances of paying it back and became losers when the housing bubble burst?
Absolute blarney. This mess is caused by social engineering on a grand and insidious scale and groups like Greenlining(located in Berkely for those who are curious enough to research) and the government who forced these bad mortgages on the banks. And who do our dear leaders want to pay for this? Why those of us who obtained mortgages that we could afford only when we could afford them. Those of us who worked very hard to pay off those mortgages. The people who gambled forever increasing housing prices, took mortgages they couldn’t afford or developed absolutely junk financial instruments need to bear the brunt of absolutely bad decisions. I doubt very seriously if I elected to default on my mortgage that Pelosi, Franks, Reid or Obama would jump at the chance of paying off my mortgage. Let them pay for their own mortgages or suffer the consequences.
If they think they were hoodwinked, then look to the leftists who had some grand idea that went bust.
I was planning on catching anything I missed on the debate on Saturday Night Live this weekend. j/k. Since it doesn’t look like anyone can make it I guess I will see ya’ll next week! However, I expect everyone to redeem themselves and show up next Thursday! :)
There was dog poo (at least I hope it was dog) all over the sidewalk at my bus stop this morning, it was very gross. It had gotten tracked all over the place and was just a mess. People shouldn’t have dogs if they aren’t going to clean up after them. I feel bad for the Starbucks employees who will most likely be the ones to clean it up, or maybe it will rain and wash it away?
Thanks Ellen – we’ll check it out:)
mellaw6565,
Most knitting groups welcome new people. I think they meet at 7 at BN. I’d be really surprised if you showed up and were not welcome. :)
BCollins – I think your posts 49 & 50 are fearmongering – just a little?
I’m not fearful as you suggest for myself – I am fearful for our children/grandchildren and the enormous cost to them if this massive bailout goes forward without any immediate taxpayer relief. This bill may free up credit for businesses to stimulate markets, but what the average person needs right now is real help, not the ability to take out more credit. Again, it’s just more trickle down voodoo economics if you ask me – IMO.
Suspicious – hell yes! Aren’t you? And that includes everyone – Bush and Congress. Are you ready just to give them carte blanche to dole out $700 billion dollars after only contemplating things for a week?
While Hoover was President, buying on margin/credit was rampant and no controls were present. But when FDR was elected in 1932 he didn’t fix everything in a week – and more importantly, what he did put in place were measured programs designed to put PEOPLE back on their feet, not reward the companies who engaged in bad behavior with inappropriate credit and banking practices.
So, until I see some reasoned, measured approach and an explanation on how we’re going to pay for it, I’ll continue to cheer when the bailouts are voted down.
How many people do you know who have more than 10 kids?
The first 10 are free, but that 11th is gonna cost ya!

*******NEW AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM IN ALKI********
Alki Kid’s Place is an activities program for children ages 4 – 14. We are a non religious program sponsored by Alki Congregational UCC. It was developed to fulfill the growing need in our community for quality, affordable activities for children after school and during the summer months. Our program was designed to provide a safe and enriching environment for children and encourage recreational, artistic, creative abilities and learning.
Alki Kidʼs Place, which is in its first season offering after-school activities in West Seattle, began in late June with a summer program that served over 30 children. We offer a safe, nurturing environment along with a dedicated, caring staff. We offer a variety of activities including arts & crafts, movies, games, music, exercise, tae kwon do, along with quiet time for homework, reading, and relaxing as well as tutoring.
After-school programs began on September 3rd. Our hours are 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Openings are now available. We offer daily rates as well as weekly rates, $15/day or $70/week. Alki Kidʼs Place is at 6115 SW Hinds. To register or get more information, call Cheryl Snyder at 206-938-0145.
High Speed access for the Greater Seattle area.
Sorted by Marketed speed:
50 Mbps/20 Mbps – FIOS
16 Mbps/2 Mbps – comcast
7 Mbps/896kps – dsl (various)
2.0Mbps/256KB – clearwire
600 Kbps/ 500Kbps – EVDO (sprint verizon att “aircard”)
As with everything your mileage my vary (YMMV)
Because of an inane rule about the definition of carrier monopolies in seattle verizon basically has listed FIOS fiber as being available sometime after hell freezes over.
Comcast is shared infrastructure based on neighborhood nodes, which causes wild fluxuations in service and has recently been sued for throttling, and has recently introduced a 250g monthly cap for download ( 30hours of netflix streaming )
DSL offers the best upload, all the way to megs per second but its has physical limitations based on footage from the office, and its still relatively expensive for old tech.
Clearwire is hugely limited by nodes much like comcast, but its also limited by wireless line of sight. They have been accused of overselling service without supplying appropriate infrastructure.
EVDO and other aircards are a nice incremental step in wireless abilities of individual laptops but they are hardly a whole house connectivity solution.
unless you really understand the differences in the technology its really best to ask your neighbors or try more than one service before you settle in on a multi month, or year contract. Also avoid paying needless fees on equipment rental by using google to purchase these items outright, breaking even usually takes a couple of months at best.
You can also try Akina Designs. They are on California Ave. near Cafe Lladro.
They do beautiful work and are also local.
Sadly the high school students are the most obvious here in my neighborhood. I have confronted a few and gotten a blank stare.
SHA pays landscapers to pick up the larger pieces after trash pickup day but only on the SHA property.
Those of us on the other side of the street, are gifted with every single snack wrapper, can, bottle and mcdonalds bag that gets emptied before the walkers get back to the SHA property. I have watched countless times, the same school aged students finish a bottle or unwrap a food item and just let go of it where ever they happen to be standing.
I fill a kitchen sized trash bag every two weeks just from the frontage of my lot and I know the corner resident next door gets twice that.
There are only two or three households out of 20 that are responsible for 90% of the trash. The other 10% seems to be random drivers who developed a habit in years past of dumping the contents of their car mid block where the SHA used to have a trash / free stuff pile before the redevelopment.
Elementary schools seem to try to instill some basic ecology knowledge but I suspect high schools are either not successful at whatever they are attempting to teach or the littering as well as the walking in the street instead of the sidewalk, are forms of rebellion against perceived powerlessness.
Trensuela, are you involved with the North Delridge Neighborhood Council (if you live anywhere from, say, the police precinct north)? It just so happens they meet tomorrow night. Would be a good opportunity to get involved and find out what they’ve done in the past and what they’re doing next. 6:30 pm, Delridge Library, Wednesday night (I happen to be adding the meeting to the events calendar now so have the facts at hand). If you’re closer to the south end of Delridge, the Community Safety Coalition meeting (fourth Thursday of each month) is probably a better place. Re: your main question – some of our walking routes here in southwest West Seattle (Fauntleroy/Gatewood) have a lot of littering and I don’t think the culprits are getting a kick out of it, I just think they’re lazy/mean/dumb … TR
Bonnie – is the B&N group on every other Wed. night open for new people & beginners? Do you have more details? Thanks:)
Hello, there is a mountain growing on our block along Delridge of empty cans, bottles, and assorted other litter. It is really tiring as I know that there is a group that goes out every two weeks to pick it up…I plan on volunteering next time. Has anyone had any succes in deterring people from littering? It seems to me on some level that the people who are littering may get a kick out of people picking up after them.
Alright Needlers.
It sounds like virtually everyone wants to watch the debate. I hear ya! So lets cancel this week and resume next Thursday! If anyone is vehemently opposed, speak now or… ya you get the idea.
cheers,
Ln
Yes, I’ll be absent as well to watch the debate debacle. But, I’ll be there next Thursday. I’m pretty certain. Have fun ya’ll.
STOP with the personal conflicts. This thread started helpfully and went completely off the rails after #19 – I have deleted everything afterward and closed the topic, which is a shame because there are probably more helpful opinions that could be offered.
And there is NOTHING WRONG with anecdotal evidence. Point out the facts too, but personal experience sometimes is more accurate – what companies say is not always what they do.
