    MargL-

darn, while I was researching, you beat me to it!!

Note that, if one is in the lane of travel, one is supposed to signal at least 100 ft BEFORE moving into the turn lane.

However, cj raised two questions. I believe the following SMC means in English that it is a violation to drive down the “two-way left turn lane”* to enter the “one-way left-turn pocket” at the end; you have to enter the pocket from the lane of travel as a separate maneuver. Good thing I NEVER do that to enter the left turn pocket they shortened considerably when Fauntleroy was repaved last year when traffic is backed up….

    SMC 11.55.040 Left turns.

The operator of a vehicle intending to turn left shall approach the turn in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the

direction of travel of such vehicle. Whenever practicable the left turn shall be made to the left of the center of the intersection and so as to leave the intersection or other location in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the same direction as such vehicle on the roadway being entered. (RCW 46.61.290(2))

    *SMC 11.14.690 Two (2) way left-turn lane.

“Two (2) way left-turn lane” means a lane near the center of the roadway set aside for use by vehicles making left turns in both directions from or into the roadway. (RCW 46.61.290(3)(a))

I’ve always thought that the turning lane (like the one on California) was a place for you to pull your car out of the active lane of traffic to stop while you wait for a break in opposing traffic before you make a turn. But I’ve noticed people driving up to a half a block or more in the turn lane if they are making a left turn at an upcoming intersection. Is this kosher?

It seems especially common with people pulling out of the Post Office parking lot in the Junction, turning left (south) into the turn lane on California and staying in the turn lane all the way until they turn left on Oregon. Sometimes I’m driving south on California, intending to also turn left onto Oregon and people in the turn lane pass me like I’m in reverse.

It does seem to make sense in some situations, for instance when you are turning left on Admiral from California, when you’re stuck behind a long row of cars going straight and the left turn arrow is green. But I’m wondering if anyone out there seems to have a theory or opinion on the legality of using the turning lane this way.

I forgot to mention that I’ve seen the Traffic Police down there allowing people to turn Right sometimes but not all the time.

We were smart this year (if I may brag). At breakfast on Saturday morning we asked ourselves what is it that we would like to get a deal on at the sales. And badda-bing badda-boom! We came home with those items. I wanted a second coffee maker with a built in grinder and insulated carafe-just like the one that I had at home. This one would be a back-up for parts, etc. Got it for $5.00! Bought a beautiful area rug near the Morgan Junction for $20.00; a mondo canning pot with the wire rack inside for $5.00; a vintage Santa and retro Christmas tree ornaments; yardage for a new shirt; atomic-era dinner plates to take to work so I don’t have to eat out of an ugly plastic bowl; and much more.

And of course there were purchases not on the list!

Thank you so much! These are words of encouragement. I do appreciate your opinions.

have heard other people say the city is pouring (or was pouring) money into Burien to make improvements. Hopefully the economic downtown won’t affect that.

Meg, Try Salmon Bay in Ballard or Stoneway. They probably won’t want to deliver 1 or 2 yards but would stop by when they do other pours in the area. A few other tips. Dig your hole, fill with gravel and rebar and mesh to prevent cracking. Think about adding a drain, even if it goes to a french drain for easy cleaning. If it was me, I would also think about other uses, in other words, if the chicken coop doesn’t work out, what else could you use the pad for? Its expensive and difficult to remove after its in place. Remember to orient your coop so the coop itself blocks the prevailing winter winds from the chickens “play area”.

Would they have considered it your business if you saw someone trying to abduct their child? Then the child’s safety IS your business. Call the police. I think you also could tell the bank employees. They could help the next person in line while the idiots take proper care of their child.

Anyone out there in WSBland want to earn some money this week (has to be Mon-Wed of this week)? I got a nasty case of carpal tunnel and can’t garden, and I want to clean up the yard before my dad comes on Thursday morn. I’m thinking 3-4 hours of work, $15/hour, can be done Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night after 6, all at one time, or an hour each night.

Just need weeding, moving a little dirt, and spreading some bark. Please email hcrea at gonzaga dot edu.

Hi there: I’m wondering if anyone on the forum has lived near Old Town/ Three Tree Point in Burien, or knows anyone who has, and what they thought about it. I dont know anyone who has lived there, and Ive found nothing on the Internet. The things I love about it are the views, the affordability, and the quiet. The things I don’t love about it are that the shopping isn’t great (no PCC), Ambaum reminds me of 99 with the car dealerships, and we’d miss being West Seattlites!

The reason we’re considering moving is that we’ve seen quite a few really beautiful houses with Sound views that are relatively affordable – we seem to find more houses that we like there. It’s also quiet and beachy.

Anyone love living there? Anyone regret ever living there?

    Thanks so much!!!

We tok advantage of the wonderful sunny weather yesterday biked around lake Washington for the Bicycle Sunday event, a wonderful time until some people decided to park their little kids in the middle of the bike route. We had a very nearly collided with a young boy in the wrong bike lane and all his wonderful parents did was yell at us. How about teaching your child to bike to the proper lane. Also we saw this adborable little girl about 3 sitting on her little tike bike in the middle of the bike lane and several bike clubs passing her by until one bike, then the little girl decided to move across the lane and right in front of a biker, he had no choice but to do a wheeling over the girl. Come on people! Be responsibile for your kids and show them the safe way to bike.

    waterworld..

i don’t block the seat next to me any more… i don’t ride buses enough during off times to feel threatened these days… and am almost always never alone when i do..

i am afraid i have become that single driver (with dogs) out of necessity… i need to be able to take a quick nap in my car when i get too tired to think straight enough to get myself home:(

Thank god for verizon navigation.. even i can use it and it is really good at telling me where to go. LOL.. I bet there are a few posters here who would love to be able to do that.. though they probably wouldn’t be directing me safely home:)

i am planning on teaching my dogs about buses soon though… i can pretty much guarantee no-one is going to sit next to me on those rides:)

though you would certainly be welcome any time you find me on a bus alone…

    ***

i should add that i have been the victim of random sexual assault and that it took me years to be able to sit alone anywhere that i didn’t have a wall backing me.. a clear view of anyone who might approach and a weapon in the hand in my coat pocket.

I have great respect for those who can survive an attack and go on with their lives without fear.. but there are many more who find their lives irreparably damaged by an assault and who spend the rest of their lives constantly summoning the courage to navigate public spaces alone.

I don’t think about it much any more but i have had dogs as constant companions now for over 20 years.. the kinds of dogs that make most give me a wide berth when we walk out in public. They go with me nearly every place i go and have recreated a sense of personal safety for me…

i tell every woman i meet who is now afraid to walk alone… get a dog… a big dog. You are too busy to think much about whether or not you are safe and on those rare occasions when someone frightening approaches… a low growl is generally enough to make them back quickly off.

If you are still interested in the Blew Eagle, I can offer some memories I have of it. I worked across the street from the “Blew” at Bethlehem’s Rebar Shop. The owners were Lew and Joann. She was French Canadian and had quite a temper. Many who were in there were not suprised if a bottle came whizzing by because of some argument with Lew or someone else. They were good people.

The “Blew” got it’s name, according to Lew, during the depression. The Blue Eagle was the symbol of the National Relief Act and Lew told me that people would come in and ask for their relief check.

Lew also used to talk about the “Blew” during the early years as quite a bar for West Seattle. In later days Lew posted a sign asking all bikers to leave their “colors” outside.

I remember one of the specials on the menu was the “Steelworkers Special”. If I remember right it consisted of hamburger, scrambled eggs, and

almost any thing else the cook could find.

One of my favorite bartenders was Marcia, she had a tatoo inside of her lower lip. I think it read, “Eat Butt”. She was quite a character. ‘

The “Blew” was one of my favorite places in the area. Every lunch Lew would play his favorite song on the juke box, “That’s Amore” sung by Dean Martin. Lew loved that song.

I think the “Blew” closed it’s doors in the early 80’s. I’m not sure but I think there was some port expansion that caused them to lose their lease.

It was a wild place, a lot of folks around the shipyards, Bethlehem and other places would come in after shift and many would close the place up. I know I did several times.

I sure would like to see if anyone has pictures of the place and the old bar which I remember to have been brought to the area after the turn of the century.

We were out for a belated Mother’s Day lunch when this broke out but managed to cover via iPhone. Thanks to everyone who sent messages. We had been trying to catch the 3 pm water taxi but missed it because of ridiculous traffic on Harbor Ave (mostly around Salty’s!) – gave up, headed up the hill, and started seeing messages about the outage, so we drove over to 35th and took note of all the lights that were out, subsequently moving over to Delridge. City Light took a *long* time to acknowledge the outage … I just updated the home page item with a link to their very short final report.

I believe the original term was Tea Partier, after the original Boston Tea Party. It became Teabagger later, a far more accurate title.

Need an honest, reliable, fully licensed and bonded electrician? Look no further!

    .

Many thanks to PDieter and a few others who shared their experiences with local West Seattle electrician, Mark Kessler.

    .

The strain relief strap that takes the tension off the electrical line coming from the street into the house had broken, and needed to be replaced to keep the power line from rubbing on the metal roof flashing.

    .

I called Mark and he made time to stop by after working all day on another job. It was a fairly easy repair, taking about an hour and requiring a $10 part.

    .

What impressed me most, was Mark’s willingness to stop by after usual business hours, even before going home for dinner.

    .

Best of all is the fact that Mark is not greedy. His hourly rate is very reasonable, and he even took the time to explain what he was doing and answer the usual average homeowner questions.

    .

Based on this initial experience, I hope Mark will be available to be my “regular” electrician the next time I need electrical work done.

    .

No different than having a “regular” doctor and dentist – everyone should have a few “regular” service folks that they can rely on BEFORE the need arises.

    .

    Thanks again Mark!

    smitty..

i call myself an old hippie… even tho i know that to many people that is a derogatory term.

since i call myself that i promise not to get my panties in a bunch if you call me an old hippie.

i won’t even get my panties in a bunch if all of the west seattle blog relabels me an old hippie…

i know exactly what i mean when i call myself an old hippy and to me it’s a good thing.

People in the teabag movement called themselves teabaggers. I can’t be certain.. maybe they were just setting us all us to look bad.. but i am pretty sure they just meant to refer to someone in the tea bag movement.

When i call them teabaggers the only thing i am referring to is their political affiliation…

anything anyone else thinks i am calling them exists only in their own little dirty minds.

    anonyme…

i am not sure what i said that wasn’t clear.. but i will gladly be blunt.

as long as there are seats on the bus that you can sit in.. demanding that someone move their stuff so you can sit where you want is just about as self serving as an action gets.

    waterworld..

i am pretty sure the violations for molestation or for assault trump the misdemeanor of blocking the seat next to you whether you are on a bus or not.. but as serious as they are.. they are almost impossible to enforce. Try getting a bus driver to intervene or call 911 for you… if you are counting on that.. you are guaranteed to end up a victim.

    ****

Shame on those of you who are shaming those who have already been victims of this kind of urban crime for trying to create personal safety for themselves.

because you can has nothing to do with whether you should… it really isn’t all about you.

It’s a misdemeanor to occupy more than one seat on the bus, or to interfere “in any way” with use of the service, or to hinder or prevent access to any transit property, including seats. (Also, it’s not permissible to bring a package on the bus that would take up a seat if doing so would displace passengers.) Not that I want to see anyone cited, of course, but no one is allowed to deny another person’s access to a seat. There’s no exception, so far as I can tell, in the Metro Code of Conduct for people who don’t feel safe having someone else in the adjacent seat.

JoB: Most of your last post was incomprehensible to me, especially the last paragraph. HUH???

I ride the bus for all the reasons you described. The morning express bus seldom has passengers that I would consider so suspect that a private seat is required for protection, and yet this is the time the seat-hogging phenomenon is most apparent. These hogs are probably not nursing some deep psychic hurt that prohibits them from exercising reasonable judgment and/or courtesy. They’re just rude.

You should have a reasonable ‘entitlement’ to feel safe from being attacked on the bus, although there is no guarantee of that. Hogging the seat next to you does not provide that safety. Realistically, you’re in more danger from someone sitting behind you than one next to you, not to mention the guy with the hacking H1-N1 cough across the aisle.

Charlabob, there is nothing bad about your behavior. It is reasonable to place your bag on the seat if the bus is virtually empty. If people are getting on and visibly scanning for diminishing seats, I’d say it’s time to move your stuff. Sounds like you’re just exercising that rarity – common sense.

Rant to the guy in the black or gray truck who WATCHED his dog poop on the 30 yard line of the new turf field, got in his truck and drove away. Do you know how many people play on that field every day? Clean up after your dog.

    #594760

Today at the Hiawatha Turf Field, I watched a man let his larger black dog go #2 right on the FIELD! When I went in to tell the man at the desk, he went looking for the guy and told me that he believes it might be the same guy who did it a few months ago.

People, it is against the law to have your dog, leash or not on an athletic field. And on top of that, have the nerve to NOT clean up after your dog? That guy is giving good dog owners a bad name.

According to the man at the center, the guy drives a black or gray truck, parks in the high school parking lot and has a larger black dog. He has a video of the guy doing it.
