WSMomParticipantI think it’s ridiculous that with all the construction and road closures on Spokane Street, that the city doesn’t allow us to temporarily turn right onto 1st Ave off the exit. I see police ready to ticket anyone who dares turn right against the no right turn sign, even though Spokane street to the right of the offramp is closed. I think allowing cars to turn right would decrease conjestion at 1st Avenue significantly.

bsmommaParticipantAmen.

squareeyesParticipantStrongly agree. Haven’t seen the police laying in wait (luckily, since I just chanced that turn over the weekend!) but won’t try it again in that case.

I just sent my post to the above website. Maybe if they hear from more than just me they’ll change the signs and allow a right turn during construction. It would make getting to Costco a lot easier!!!
(this has been bugging me for a while, but today was the worst yet on 1st Ave!!)

bsmommaParticipantI forgot to mention that I’ve seen the Traffic Police down there allowing people to turn Right sometimes but not all the time.

WSMomParticipantI didn’t get ticketed, but only because the officer was already busy ticketing the guy who turned ahead of me…too close for comfort.

flowerpetalMemberMaybe I’m not remembering correctly about your neighborhood WSMom, but I am thinking you are in Arbor Heights. If so, do you know the back way to Costco? Down Roxbury – Olson Wy – onto Rte 99 north to Michigan and then an easy left turn onto 4th Ave? It works like a charm and may give you an opportunity to not be so bugged. Happy shopping!

GenHillOneParticipantYes, flowerpetal! Can do the same from the north end (via W. Marginal) or “mid-WS” via Holden off of Delridge, both down to 99 & Michigan Street. Very painless once we figured it out ourselves and not hard to work the route into other errands!

Though, I don’t disagree that a temporary right on 1st would be such a bad thing. They probably think they won’t be able to put the genie back in the bottle later when they want to prohibit the turns again.

flowerpetalMemberThanks for the reminder GHO. I would probably forget that if I were in the Junction or north. It makes so much more sense.
I too get it that a temporary right would be a good thing during the construction. But I still would probably not go that way.

pamMemberI wrote to the above website – only takes a moment and perhaps, as stated, if enough of us write they will consider freeing up that right hand turn.

rwParticipantI actually wrote to the city about the right-turn situation a few months ago (along with the traffic light timing that hadn’t been modified to account for the construction closures) but was rebuffed with the response that lower Spokane eastbound would be reopened soon, so they weren’t going to make this common sense change, even on a temporary basis.
If only the mayor lived in West Seattle ….. oh wait, the Mayor USED to live in West Seattle.

blackwatchMemberI’ve taken that right 4 times since the construction started, two times right in front of a traffic cop. Many others are also.
With the mess they’ve created down there it doesn’t seem like such a bad concession.

HolyKowMemberIt will never happen. Seattle will not do anything that goes to the right….we are a 1 right = 3 lefts town and PROUD OF IT!
