In reply to: West Seattle Hospital?
WSBKeymasternope, that’s the southeast corner. we have to keep our mind fairly razor-sharp on directions for writeups on the site and SE corner is definitely Super Sup, etc.

flowerpetalMemberThe SE corner would be where the supplement store is; the SW corner is where KeyBank is; unless I am directionally impaired.

JenVMemberI heard- maybe here- that the Rocksport is not coming back when that ugly building is finished. Sad. I hope they find a new spot, too. That’s where I met my boyfriend!

JanSParticipantfunny, as long as I’ve been here I thought the old WS Hospital was in the building that now houses Super Supplements. There was a bank on that corner at one time, and I thought my ex-MIL said that the hospital was above it. My ex would know, but we don’t speak often – lol…

GenHillOneParticipantSo if this guy is getting a heads up on the tow, then obviously he’s getting out of having to pay to pick it up from impound. But don’t the orange stickers come with tickets? After having a bunch of tickets on his record, wouldn’t you think that would mean something? I say it’s time to “Get Jesse!”

JanSParticipantBDG..it will go into “hiatus” when Connor Homes develops that corner of the Alaska Junction into “retail and living space”…they will have first crack at one of the new spaces..hoping they find another location…

charlabobParticipantThanks, NR — I just added it to the NF queue and moved it up to #4.
We watched an odd combo of films and movies this weekend. I liked all except the “Best Seller” — There Must Be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis *and the sound track* were amazing. The movie was too long and too, um, strange????
The rest: (Recommended by at least one of the charlabobs)
Juno (I didn’t expect to like it — I loved it and actually bought the really silly soundtrack)
The United States of Leland — Another teen angst movie; much bleaker than Juno. Rented it because of Kevin Spacey — loved it for him and everyone else. All villains — none could be written off.
Gone Baby Gone — recommended here by NR and others — again, I was blown away.
Ambivalent — Bob Loved — Charla loved/hated: Sweeney Todd — loved the play (saw it 3 times) — loved Johnny Depp — in this case, less might be more — a little too realistic, the blood and gore.
Next in the queue —
Lars and the Beaautiful Girl — recommended by a friend and starring Ryan Gosling, the star of the United States of Leland

RonMParticipantYou’re right. The old West Seattle Hospital building is gone now, but was on the 2nd floor of the building that was replaced by the Key Bank building. I had to go there to repair a broken arm in 1942. I don’t recall how long it lasted, but I think it was gone by the early 50’s. The new West Seattle Hospital was on Holden, but went bust with bad management, embezzlements and union threats.
June 2, 2008 at 7:26 pm #625714DubbyMemberHey, all you warm WestSeattlites!
Ellenater sent me this string so i could check out the wonderful reception and great tips you are all giving her on her family’s move.
Ellenater and hub and spawn are three of the most wonderful people in the world. They deserve West Seattle, and they will treat it as a treasure.
I lived in Capitol Hill years ago, but I had a partner for seven years who grew up on California Street and we spent every major holiday in West Seattle, each year. If I could, I would move there in an Oregon minute (which is slower and greener than a New York minute and has fewer taxis). ANYway, I just felt compelled to chime in and reassure you that the ellenaters are superb, and a great fit for WS. Thank you all for making my BFF so welcome. It brought a tear to my eye that my dear ellenater might finally have found “home”.
:-)

WSBKeymasterUpdate: Reading Chapter 13 of West Side Story about health care – the “West Seattle Hospital” most likely to have been operating at that time was at the southeast corner of California and Alaska. Earlier, several other locations sequentially were known as the WS Hospital — including one at California and Morgan — and the building I mentioned at 4532 42nd SW (described in WSS as 4530, but there’s a photo, and it’s the same house; design review for the project on that site is coming up a week from Thursday) — TR

JenVMemberhands down Jak’s is the best. Always great service and great food. Also love Buddha Ruksa, Luna Park, Elliot Bay- and thanks to Aim and Luis I am now a huge fan of Skylark! Tots!!
One more, it’s in White Center but close enough: Viva Mexico. The service keeps us coming back- the strong a$$ margaritas don’t hurt, either….

A late afternoon, early evening potluck sounds good but the other ideas would work just as well.
Thanks Shibaguyz for kicking off the idea!

June 2, 2008 at 6:35 pm #626072In reply to: West Seattle Hospital?
WSBKeymasterI have a copy of West Side Story handy, will consult that. There’s also been discussion that the doomed house at 4532 42nd SW was West Seattle’s first hospital. Speaking of history, stay tuned for an overdue writeup within the next couple days — a chance to share yours online, West Seattle-specific :) — TR
June 2, 2008 at 6:34 pm #625713GreenSpacesMemberWell, the BEST part of West Seattle is that you feel like you live in the country or something, but you don’t and just across the bridge in less than 10 minutes is everything you could possibly need. I hated summers growing up because I was 10 miles from the nearest town and wouldn’t get to see my friends for 3 months. My husband wasn’t as remote and had more freedom, but as an artist-turned-software-developer, the small town attitudes didn’t work for him.
WS has the best of everything. We’ve becomine even more metro since moving here and “growing up”. The first house we bought was a 1929 farmhouse on a 1/4 acre lot in a very rural part of WS – no sidewalks, few street lights, wild animals, etc. Last year we sold it and moved to a townhome in High Point. My husband loves not having any responsibility, and I love not having to nag him. I am convinced the move and change in lifestyle has saved our marriage! And the dog and cats adjusted just fine and we are all very happy!
