The Matador is NOT a local WS hangout, the Maha is and always will be regardless. The Maha also has the best juke box around period!!. With the Rocksport leaving, at least the Maha has new flat screens to view football games on now. And no Jan that wasn’t me stumbling out, I wasn’t there on Friday night. I stumbled out on another night. Oh yeah.. if you do figure out who I am, you guys can buy me my favorite whiskey Gentlemen Jack.

This year I am thankful I have the pleasure of cooking my grandfather, my most favorite person in the world, his last Thanksgiving dinner.

I am thankful that my first real experience of the death of a beloved family member will be the hardest, so all that pass in the future won’t hurt as badly.

I am thankful to live in a wonderful community full of caring and very thoughtful individuals.

I am thankful for true love and that against all odds my husband and I found each other. Also because he will always see me as “the prettiest girl in the world”.

I am thankful for ALL the experiences I have had that have shaped who I am. Marching through the last years of my twenties I have finally found the essence of the person I have grown up to be.

Most of all I am thankful that the purity and innocence of childhood has not left me. I love the play, the dreaming, the hoping, believing that anything can happen and that magic really does exist.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday filled happy memories and inspiration for a better new age ahead.

I have upgraded my cell phone and have a blue Sanyo Katana phone that works perfectly fine up for grabs if you need one. This phone does not use a sim card. I received it from my wireless service, Working Assets/Credo Mobile, is about 2 years old. Working Assets/Credo Mobile uses the Sprint service. It has always worked well for me, and I think I almost never, ever have dead zones in the West SEattle area, except maybe up near 55th SW and SW Genessee. It’s a flip phone with camera..also has the recharger, and I know I have the instruction booklet somewhere..will find it today.

I just love the free boxes at the liquor store! Such a sensible, no-hassle way to recycle. And the folks there are always so pleasant. (I miss the Morgan store, though.)

JoB: I’m with you philosophically. But sometimes breaking the rules of scale just works. For instance, New York City’s Chrysler Building completely disregards the notion of human scale. And I’ve seen that building at all hours of the day, in different seasons and in vastly different light and yet it always astonishes and never subjugates. Likewise, go stand very close to the EMP sometime (or the Guggenheim Bilbao for that matter) on a bright summer day and look carefully at how colors dance over the undulating metal as you walk around and slowly change your perspective. It is architecture at its playful best. Sometimes you need to see architecture with your heart as well as your eyes.

    Way to go Wingme!

With the amount of home burglaries in WS lately everyone that pitches in (hopefully without putting themselves in danger) helps a lot!

I always carry a digital camera with me, its been extremely helpful a few times with suspicious activity and shoplifters at my workplace.

I’d like to piggyback on this thread and ask for recommendations for pet cremations. I will be needing that service soon. Previously I’ve always buried my pets, but after moving and leaving some behind I’ve decided to cremate this time.

Our beloved Jack (the cat) is rapidly reaching his final days in this world. He’s nearly 17 and has had a fine life. We made the wrenching decision 4 years ago to make him an outdoor-only cat after a freak minor accident rendered him totally incontinent. He survived the transition and, until recently, seemed to still have an acceptable quality of life. We have a heated cat house for him on the porch and live in a quiet community with little traffic. In the summers he loved to lie outside in my south-facing garden, under some branches in the sun. He is the most gentle, good-natured, sweet kitty you’ll ever know. Always purrs and “stands” up to greet you, beseeching you to pet him. Were he not such a swell guy, we never would have put up with the years of pee stains that “decorate” our front porch. While unpleasant, we couldn’t rationalize putting him down because of the mess.

A year ago he lost his lifelong companion, our other elder cat, Clever. We thought Jack could never survive without him, but he surprised us. And over the past summer we were glad to find him every day lounging about contentedly in the yard.

Now, though, he just seems woefully impaired and sad. It seems cruel to perpetuate what has very quickly come to seem like a diminished life. It’s cold out, even despite the warm house he has. He can barely see, and walking is much more of an effort than it used to be. He’s lost so much weight (although his appetite remains strong).

Even so — making this so much more painful — he still L.O.V.E.S being petted and seems to live for the tiny crumbs of attention our busy, kid- and other-animal-full household can give him.

So we need to say goodbye and help him along to his next life. We can’t bear taking him to a vet’s office. Can anyone recommend vet who will make a house call?

Ugh, I’m SO OFTEN NOT SURE that “to love and to have lost is better than ne’er to have loved at all.”

    Thanks everyone.

Update – I called SPD media office before heading out to get a visual on the intersection status. Officer Jeff Kappel confirms it was a vehicle vs. pedestrian and one person went to Harborview Medical Center (which usually means serious injuries), but the info he has doesn’t say whether that was the pedestrian (you’d guess – but always dangerous to assume) or someone from the car.

My bad for not checking here every 2 minutes but if breaking news happens in your ‘hood I also invite you to call/text/e-mail us – we go out to breaking news; I saw a medic call at this location but a medic call doesn’t necessarily mean “crash,” so we don’t automatically roll on those unless we get a tip, and the medic call closed shortly after I saw it. meantime, thanks very much for posting. we will see if we can find out more … I’m going to head out to the scene on the offhand chance officers are still there; weekend afterhours contacts are not always easy to come by.

While the beholder may judge the beauty according to their own tastes, I think we can agree on (perhaps I didn’t take enough art classes) that symmetry is good (A word that always gets me, because it isn’t symmetrical). In a photo or landscape, balance is good, leading the eye to consider different elements, not just placing something at the center of focus. And scientists often refer to elegant theorems, those that are pleasing, going so far to say that elegant theorems are not only pleasing, but even more likely to be correct.

Now going to the other side: The Experience Music “Pustule” (as a boss of mine calls it) is acceptable only because of it’s location near the Fun Forest, with the forgettable Center House and other Seattle Center architecture around it for immunization. I truly wonder how the EMP will age given Gehry’s penchant for designs that function marginally as buildings.

My main complaint about the Seattle skyline is much the same as my compliant about West Seattle architecture: Anyone can do as they please. Riding the Water Taxi, the city skyline looks best at a distance, with some colorful clouds thrown in to distract one from the pedestrian, one-off, just plain ignorant architecture of most buildings that taken as a whole is ugly. Regardless of which individual building one likes, it’s neighbor will be so ugly as to negate any bonus. I wish Seattle had imposed development guidelines as strict as Vancouver B.C.. When you go to Granville Island, the use of green glass in nearly all condos and buildings makes for a harmonious whole, often matching the green of the wind-whipped waters of False Creek. There, closer is better.

I would almost say that there is an absolute that can be enhanced or degraded by what one chooses to drape upon it. It in the best of worlds, a elegant draping is paired with the body to fit it and eternal art is created. My two cents.

Since this discussion so far has only taken place in the forum, I wanted to post this here. I noted in a recent e-waste recycling thread that Union Gospel Mission has a recycling event under way this weekend (see our Events calendar). A forum member posted concerns about the provider. I put out an inquiry – and got this letter back from the provider. Just for you to consider, if you are thinking about the Union Gospel e-recycling event:

    >>Dear Editor of the West Seattle Blog,

I wanted to introduce myself, my name is Daniel Huh and I am the marketing

    director for EWC Group.

I am writing this email to let you know that we as an electronic recycler,

are very aware of the rampant unethical downstream that many e-waste

recyclers have in the United States. I wanted to reassure you that we are

    not one of those companies.

Our company keeps a very transparent policy as to where our end products go,

whether refurbished for reuse or broken down to make new electronic

products, we diligently strive to move forward in an environmentally sound

and ethical manner. We keep meticulous paperwork (which can be provided at

anytime) as to end user information. We are working very closely with the

Basel Action Network (We are currently on the waiting list to be approved),

the state of Washington’s environmental protection organizations, as well as

    local private environmental auditing companies.

The EWC Group team always has “downstream due diligence” in mind.

I read a few mixed posts on the West Seattle Blog and wanted to reassure

your readers and bloggers that we are really here to do some good for the

    community and the environment.

Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions or concerns

regarding our practices and downstream, or just to chat about what we do at

    our company.

Thank You again for putting us up on your site.

    Best Regards,

Daniel J Huh | EWC Group

    C’mon Seattle let’s GREEN UP!

Have you heard of Green Up Seattle? Well, if you haven’t listen up because this is an amazing program that allows you to not only make a difference, but bring more green power to the Northwest. By enrolling in Green Up, you can purchase green power for a portion of your electricity use and demonstrate your support for wind power and other new renewable sources (like solar and biomass). Seattle City Light’s wind energy comes from the Stateline Wind Project near Walla Walla, WA, which is one of the largest wind farms in the U.S.

Choosing Green Up! reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, improves air quality and helps reduce the growth of climate-warming emissions. The Green Up program is Green-e certified and fulfills LEEDTM Project green power requirements.

Ok so here’s the deal. You simply agree to pay a little bit more each month and you will get $25 towards an order on http://www.Spud.com. So for as little as $3 a month (or $6 or $12) you can make a 25%, 50% or 100% commitment and get local, organic groceries delivered right to your door! Spud.com is a northwest home food delivery service and we have teamed up with them to make this an offer you can’t pass on (good through December 31st, 2008.)

We pay about $3 for our lattes per day so pass for one day and make Seattle a greener place.

Check out http://www.greenupseattle.org or call 206-684-8822 for more info. Let’s all work together and pitch in. It’s that extra mile that makes the difference, and it always helps if you’ve got some food right?

Here at Seattle City Light we take pride in providing “green” energy for our customers. We realize that we all need to work together to reduce our carbon footprint and do everything we can to make renewable energy accessible and affordable.

My maritime sweetie confirms that yes, the boats with the flashing blue lights at night that are escorting ferries are the little coast guard boats. They’ve been doing these escorts for a long time as part of Homeland Security, although they don’t always escort every route/run.

And, might I say, that it’s been great for just about everything. I celebrated my graduation there with about 15 people and they were happy to accommodate. I go there after dinner out for a late drink with friends, and we always have a good time (it’s quiet if you get there before 9 on weekends, and basically any weekend night.) They have decent live music too! My dad and I go there often for lunch and a beer and they never disappoint. It’s also good for just flat out gettin’ buzzed on the weekend. We swear by it, and we’re actually pretty picky about where we go. Weekend nights however devolve at times into what you find everywhere: The West Seattle High School Classes of ’02-05 getting drunk and rubbing up against each other. Not that I mind sometimes.

The only thing they’re missing: Gaelic football on the TV. If it had that, I would live there.

As for the Celtic Swell… I’ve been to Ireland (spent my 21st birthday drunk as a skunk in Galway.) It reminds me of a Galway bar instead of a Dublin bar (all of which I loathed.) I think there are good times to go – it’s always good for dinner in my opinion.

I’ve always had great service there (the bartenders and waitresses all remember us after having gone there only about 5 times), the food (IMO) is great and I like their beer selection.

thee: what’s your beef with the Swell? Or are you one of those West Seattle-ites that crab about anyplace without tapestry on the walls and $12 martinis?

Random question but for the last week or so I’ve noticed two flashing blue lights (which I assume to be police boats) following closely behind a Seattle-Bainbridge (I’m pretty sure it’s not a Bremerton one) ferry sometimes early in the morning and always around dinner time. I see them from my balcony on Alki. Are they really police boats? And why are they escorting the ferry back and forth? Do they do that for “important” people? I’m so intrigued!!!

    Thanks y’all!

I always meant to thank the person that mailed in my rent check for me. I sealed the env and put a stamp on it and had it in my coat pocket to mail that day. When I looked in my pocket later that day, it was gone. I called my landlord the next day and he said he got it. Again, thank you.

As far as that lost sign thread…all I can do is shake my head at where some posters chose to take it and throw in their personal opinions about why it was ok to steal. Toxic people are janky.

    JamieGummer..

you apparently missed the part of Doris’s post that said most of the crafters sold all of their inventory… that isn’t exactly the litmus test of scraping by.

it is clear that there is a difference of opinion.. a lot of people voted with their pocketbooks to create a successful sale… and they didn’t vote that the craft items offered were in poor taste.

Who knows, you may have missed some outstanding items because of your preconceived notions of what was.. and wasn’t available at that sale.

You are right that in time as young urban professionals figure out that West Seattle isn’t another continent and is close to their work downtown they will bring other businesses to West Seattle that will cater to their taste. That is the way voting with your pocketbook works.

But you are wrong to assume that the change in taste will be necessarily be an improvement. I have seen plenty of truly tasteless product sold to that demographic.. just because it is new or different doesn’t make it better.

To be honest.. the majority of the building designs in those projects that you mention are going up aren’t exactly groundbreaking design… nor are they a delight to the eye.

FullTilt.. or half tilt or quarter tilt as you so charmingly called him would welcome your business. He cares far too much about the integrity of the quality of his ice cream to spit in it.. so you are safe.

The joke is that you will find his shop meets your criteria… campy retro mixed with some of the best ice cream with the most innovative flavors around…

and you might even find yourself admiring the proprietor and his wife… locals who put their money where their mouth was in a dinky store front in a less desirable part of the West Seattle peninsula and offered a product outstanding enough to gain mention in downtown upscale food commentaries.

Of course.. you would never find it without recommendations from those who will enter a storefront regardless of it’s exterior and location just to see what is inside.

Have you discovered Zippys? Another local putting their money where their mouth is in a less desirable location and producing quality hamburgers.

Neither proprietor would have been able to open the store in one of those upscale locations with an appropriately aesthetic exterior…

nor are they likely to move to one when their business blossoms … part of their intention is to invest in their community. They both buy locally.. Zippys buys ice cream from Full tilt… they employ locally.. and they both made sure their businesses were safe welcoming places for the local children.

They.. and other businesses like them.. which includes Doris’s shop and many others… clearly are pursuing standards of excellence… while being socially responsible to their community.

I personally would hate to see the homogenization and the increase in rental costs for small businesses that has inflicted other Seattle neighborhoods as the wants and needs of the young urban professionals drove out local businesses happen to West Seattle.

Is it inevitable? maybe. But that doesn’t necessarily make it a good thing…

as you will discover in time as you age and gain an appreciation for the timeless nature of some art… and an understanding that unique is not always pretty but is still of great value simply because it is unique.

You are entitled to your personal opinions.. but it is possible to express them in a way that doesn’t put down the rest of us who also live here and are entitled to our opinions…

and who happen to appreciate the quirky enough to tolerate an A board leading us to their location.

Poke your head in enough of those storefronts and you might join those in West Seattle who battle to keep this community unique…

Last time I talked to DPD it was “decision will be out at end of October.” But before that, it was end of September, end of August, whatever. All I can tell you is it’s not out yet but I’ll be sending out another inquiry shortly to see if there’s a new explanation as to the holdup. Certainly the DPD review backlog has to have slowed given the construction slowdown. Such decisions are usually announced in the Monday/Thursday Land Use Information Bulletins, which I get and review the second they come in, but there are also a couple other places to watch for advance word and I’m always monitoring those too.

And while I have your attention; your avatar scares the b-jeezus out of me. I wonder if I was one of those kids scared of clowns.

Ooh ooh ooh! I just thought of a cocktail recipe that I heard of today that you should know (I’m free associating here and totally hijacking this thread).

Can of frozen pink lemonade, big ol’ handful of strawberries and a generous pour of Southern Comfort in the blender.

Southern Comfort is a “seasonal” drink for me. Not before Thanksgiving Eve, and not after New Years.
