JiggersMemberThe bar is now open for business once again. What a nice job they did in remodeling it.

wundrgrrrlParticipantUh oh, does it still qualify as a dive? A “nice” one at that? <fingers crossed>
November 17, 2008 at 11:45 pm #647549
JenVMemberI hope that a bunch of noobs don’t come in and spoil it. If I see what happened at the Matador when it first opened, I will be sad.

JanSParticipantlol..my vocabulary just grows and grows on here. First, it was “janky”, on another thread. Now it’s “noobs”. Thanks, JenV. The vision in my head of a “noob” is truly entertaining. ;-)
November 18, 2008 at 12:22 am #647551
flowerpetalMemberThanks to whomever pointed me towards the urban dictionary yesterday for the word “Janky.” Now I can go there and look up noob!
November 18, 2008 at 8:17 am #647552
wingmeMembernewbie?
November 18, 2008 at 2:32 pm #647553
flowerpetalMemberAccording to the Urban Dictionary a noob is often missused as in a “newb” or newbie. It is not what a noob is. A noob is someone too lazy to do the work her/himself but would have others to do it and then take the credit as if done by the noob.

JoBParticipanti think a newbie is often a noob..
what is janky?

flowerpetalMemberNovember 18, 2008 at 4:35 pm #647557
flowerpetalMemberThe urban dictionary can be frustrating cuz words are hard to find and not necessarily in alpha order beyond the first letter. At the bottom of the page is a “jump too” link. Use it and enter the word you want.

flipjackParticipantnow about that nappppppppp.

JillParticipantWow, I’ve been misusing noob all this time, too. Good to know!
I have thought every so often about how I miss the old Maharaja, but then I wondered if it was more the associations than the place itself, yanno? I mean, really, the times I had there could’ve been had in the new Maharaja as well. And we are looking forward to seeing the new bar.
JenV, do you work there? If I go, will I recognize you by your avatar? (btw, I’ve been dying to know, is this what you were wearing when you got banned from the library?) :->
November 19, 2008 at 5:37 am #647560
JenVMemberoh gosh, no…I don’t work there. But I have spent enough time there over the last 14 years it qualifies at least as a time share. ;) It is the people, not the decor- that makes the Maha a great place.
November 19, 2008 at 5:56 am #647561
flowerpetalMemberJenV, I can always count on reading your posts and getting a laugh! Perhaps there should be a brass plate in the new Maha with your name.
And while I have your attention; your avatar scares the b-jeezus out of me. I wonder if I was one of those kids scared of clowns.
Ooh ooh ooh! I just thought of a cocktail recipe that I heard of today that you should know (I’m free associating here and totally hijacking this thread).
Can of frozen pink lemonade, big ol’ handful of strawberries and a generous pour of Southern Comfort in the blender.
Southern Comfort is a “seasonal” drink for me. Not before Thanksgiving Eve, and not after New Years.

JenVMemberflowerpetal, that sounds like one dangerous concoction. ;)

villagegreenMemberSo, I finally checked it out this past Friday. I will confirm that West Seattle now has one less dive bar. It was funny listening to people walk into the place and exclaim, “Holy Sh*t.”
The place has really been swanked up. No more darts, no more Christmas lights, no more Rainier sitting in a bucket of ice. It’s pretty much unrecognizable from the old place. Thank god they didn’t destroy the back wall mural, so it still has a little character.
After downing three or four beers and pondering what I thought of the new place, I finally decided what offends me most about the makeoever is that basically it now looks like a low budget version of Matador. Is that the best they could come up with?! Does every place need to look the same in order to bring in business? Jeez – they’re an INDIAN restaurant. Maybe they could have played up that aspect.
Oh well…I’ll probably still go there once in a while, but I feel the Corner Pocket may be getting more of my money in the future.

JiggersMemberHey villagegreen relax bro.. I don’t mind change as long as bartender Bogie doesn’t leave. He’s the only one in WS who knows how to make a drink and pour a real shot. No such thing as a 3-second BS rule. Have a few real drinks made by Bogie and you’ll forget about the new look fast. I’m just hoping it will bring more single hot young ladies. It’s still cheaper to drink at the Maha than most places in WS or anywhere in downtown.
November 24, 2008 at 7:00 pm #647565
JenVMemberWell, I think it looks lovely. The whole design and execution was Bogie’s – and I think it looks nothing like the Matador. It’s just a nicer space, it’s a lot more usable as far as seating – and the bartenders actually have some space behind the bar now. Oh, and there is a lot more room for more premium liquors – they actually have 5 kinds of tequila now! The people are still the same, and that is what matters the most.
If you go in there, ask Bogie if you can see the photo of the 1/2 way point in cleaning the mural. If that doesn’t put someone off smoking, nothing will. It was covered in 50 years of yellow, gummy nicotine residue. blech.
November 24, 2008 at 7:24 pm #647566
JanSParticipantI was there Friday evening…it was packed. So obviously it hasn’t put many people off. The drinks were great, the fooddelish, and except for the rather inebriated guy who almost fell into my lap as he stumbled out, a good time was had by all.
Jiggers…was that you? ;-)
November 24, 2008 at 7:45 pm #647567
villagegreenMemberI definitely agree that it was packed, but to say that means it hasn’t put many people off doesn’t make total sense. I agree that it looks ‘nice’ now. And it is apparent that making your bar ‘nice’ in West Seattle does bring in new business. So, I totally understand why they made the update. I just think they could have integrated some aspects of the old place into the new one.
And I do think it looks sorta like the Matador bar on a budget. I was actually thinking that when I overheard someone else say it outloud next to me. The bar just has a completely different feel now.
Also, I actually think the place feels smaller – and I heard more than several people say the same thing. With the bar on the long wall and those standing tables out front, when it’s busy it just feels cramped – people still didn’t seem to be making use of the former ‘back’ area. I do agree that more space behind the bar is great for the bartenders, though.
Time will tell whether or not the place gets taken over by a new crowd. I’m glad for them that their business will surely increase. It’s just sad that one of the few remaining bars in West Seattle with a sense of history has gone by the wayside. I’m all for progress, but not when everyplace starts looking the same.
November 24, 2008 at 7:49 pm #647568
JenVMemberbelieve me, I miss the old Maha. Hell, the BF and I shared our first kiss there! But progress has to march on – behind the bar was nearly unusable it was so small – and kind of nasty. I know Bogie is happy to have fridges that work, a larger well for ice, more room for good booze and a dishwasher.
November 24, 2008 at 7:49 pm #647569
squareeyesParticipantHey…I was there Friday night too. Kind of quiet when we arrived around 6:30pm but really hopping when the girls and I left three+ hours later. Seemed like business and clientele as usual to me.
I did question the need for all the big-screen televisions but thankfully they turned the sound off and the music on an hour after we arrived.
I dislike Matador and don’t get that vibe from Maharajah at all! (thank goodness)
November 24, 2008 at 8:17 pm #647570
villagegreenMemberOh! How could I have forgotten that detail?! Yes, there are 6, count ’em, 6 flatscreen TVs. Is that really necessary? I didn’t realize they were trying to be a sports bar.
And as for the Matador comparison, I’m not saying it has a similar ‘vibe’, at least not yet, I’m just saying I found the huge curved wooden bar to be similar to Matador’s. Obviously not the same, but similar. And as that’s really the only distinguising character of the bar as a whole now, I thought it was worth mentioning.
November 24, 2008 at 9:02 pm #647571
JiggersMemberThe Matador is NOT a local WS hangout, the Maha is and always will be regardless. The Maha also has the best juke box around period!!. With the Rocksport leaving, at least the Maha has new flat screens to view football games on now. And no Jan that wasn’t me stumbling out, I wasn’t there on Friday night. I stumbled out on another night. Oh yeah.. if you do figure out who I am, you guys can buy me my favorite whiskey Gentlemen Jack.
