Anybody take their car to the Elliott Goodyear on Fauntleroy?

Good or bad? Are they on the up and up?

I had a coupon, so I went in for an oil change. They recommended an additional $1100 in work which I am holding off on, at least for now. The biggest chunk of the estimate was replacing the struts for $500, and another $200+ for rear shocks. I have not noticed any problems, although to be honest, I don’t even know what a strut is, and wouldn’t know a strut problem if I had one. I drive a minivan with 70,000 miles.

Just curious about other people’s experiences here. The people were nice, and the car was done fast, but I was taken aback by the additional work they suggested. Thanks for any input!

I’ve bought my tires from them for years. I’ve always got good service from them. I drive an old car, but they’ve never suggested extra work on it. However, for $1100, I think I’d ask somebody else to look at it also and give an estimate.

I’ve been going there for oil changes for awhile. They’ve been great. I once asked them to check my tires for nails when my Tire Pressure Monitoring System kept going off every couple weeks. They found a loose valve stem which was not found by the dealership after many trips. I would get a second opinion, as well, since $1100 is a significant cost.

I have not used them, but have used Tom’s Automotive across the street. I went to Tom’s for an oil change and to replace brakes. They called me an hour later and said oil change was finished and brakes had plently of life left. The was very freshing to hear them not charge me for something I didn’t need. I’ve been back several times since for other things and have been very impressed with service and price.

I always go to Courtesy Tire in the 4800 block of California and have been very pleased with these folks. Have several friends who like them as well.

Also, try Tom’s Auto in West Seattle close to YMCA.

I have gone to goodyear for a long time too, but recently they changed management. Last time I went in, I ended up doing a bunch of repairs on my car. The thing is, I was just there for tires. So, I called the Graig’s Japanese Auto because they recently did engine work on my car and asked them if they had looked at what Goodyear suggested needed repairs and Greg’s said they had and everything was fine. I had already paid for the repairs by that time because I trusted the people at Goodyear. I have now heard from two other west seattlites that they have had the same problem there. Another thing is that while I was waiting for my car tires, I could hear them offering services as separate things when for me they simply through it in as part of the whole price… VERY frustrating!

Thanks for all the input. I think I will look around at some of the other suggested places and get some second opinions.

I have been going to Goodyear for the past 5 years. For the past year, it seems like I am being sold on things I don’t need every time that I go in. I took my car to Tom’s and they were awesome. I am extremely happy with them.

a few years back i took my truck there for brakes and was blown away by an $1800 estimate. i knew they were full of you know what and got my brakes done for under $700 at les schwabb in ballard. they did advise me of some potential additional work under the hood that would be around $200 if and when it needed to be done. i didn,t end up needing the additional work. some time before this encounter i sent my kid in there to get some brake work done and was very unhappy with the price but it was under $500 and i was too busy to deal with it but i know a bit about what this type of work is worth and feel we overpaid. i have been real happy at schwabb in ballard and have never left there feeling taken.

I had the same experience with Elliott, so I’d never go back there. It’s like going to a doctor to remove a splinter, and being told one needs to have one’s leg removed.

I agree–Elliott told me I needed a tune-up last time I went there (for an oil change). I told them that they had just done that on my car less than 12000 miles ago. They quickly covered by saying–oh, then you don’t need one now. So why did you tell me I did? Their answer was that the mileage on my car suggested it was necessary. That plus another $700 or so in other maintenance. I’ll go somewhere else next time.

A tire shop told my wife she needed struts (shocks) to the tune of maybe $650. No thanks. Took the car to Toms for brakes (were needed) and struts??… First thing they said was “thats the most oversold item in a flaky shop”. Checked the car and said they were fine. Toms has our business now. The older lady that works there is occasionally a grump but everyone else there is great…

Elliott’s oil change coupon is a bait-and-switch. For the oil recommended for my car (and I’m not talking about anything exotic here, just a synthetic blend)there was about a $20 markup. Since I was about to hit the highway, I went ahead and let them change the oil.

When I picked up my car the guy told me my car needed its 45k service and went into a big drama, rolling his eyes and shaking his head while he implied that the engine was prime to fall out the moment I hit the highway. I didn’t bother to tell him I had just had it serviced by the dealer at half his quoted price–just politely declined. Then he tried to convince me that I ABSOLUTELY NEEDED to let them sell me new windshield wiper blades for about $60.

I would highly recommend Courtesy Tire (Firestone) on California instead. Their prices are up-front and they do exactly what needs to be done. They’ve also been up-front with me about what isn’t necessary or what can wait a few months.

Elliot’s sold me a dead battery. I took it back and they did exchange it. So they did make good on it. I was a little worried there for a bit.

Been to Elliott’s a few times and never had a problem. Mind you this is regular maintenance stuff, and I’ve never had to go in for an emergency repair. But always got out for a reasonable fee and never had extra work pushed on us.

For a while we were regularly picking up nails and screws in our tires where my wife used to work. They fixed a tire for us a few times for free.

Tom’s automotive wanted more than 4 times what the dealer wanted for the same work on my car!! They said $3500! It cost me $650 to get it done at Courtesy Tire, a little less than the dealer wanted. I mean really, was Toms going to rebuild my whole engine?? Plus when you call they need all your personal info before they will even give you a quote. Why do they need my home address to quote? My cars vin number and plate number to quote ?[especially since they had to call back to ask me the same things the Vin should have told them] No thanks. I’ll never use Toms.My daughter had a similar experience with them several years ago.

We will use Courtesy Tire again. They were great.
