We have CenturyLink fiber internet (just internet and phone) at a speed of 40gig. We are experiencing intermittent outages that seem to happen a couple of times an hour. Power cycling the router (ours, not the CenturyLink one) works to restore service. This happened last fall on a Sunday night; by the morning the problem had disappeared. I have our router on an automatic reset every night at 2:30 am. I have also reset their ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and the VLAN Tagging switch I have between the ONT and the router. So far, after power cycling those two additional things it has been stable.
    Anybody else getting outages today?

    Thanks-

    Val

@odroku: Trudy’s? Where’s that? I’m always down to try out some new local spots and when it comes to tequila? You’re speaking my language. ;)

I LOVE Salt Lick! Can’t wait to try out some of the other local hot spots like Jacobson’s or one of the Black’s spots. I actually brought a full 5lb brisket from Salt Lick (in the airport) back up with me on my last trip a few weeks ago. It was AMAZING! ;)

Have you gone to Velvet Taco over in the Domain before? I know folks get really aggressive about the tacos down there but just saying, those were some amazing nibbles!

    CarDriver, dhg,
The Huffington post article is kind of a joke. It is interesting that they point out science, then theirs is so flawed. To comment about wavelengths being long and therefore unable to harm the brain is bogus. Microwave ovens have a wavelength of about 12cm, do they think that couldn’t cause any problems? I’m not suggesting that a 1200 watt oven is the same here, but if they are going to talk science, at least base it on something legitimate. I purposefully don’t sleep with my cell phone next to my head, do you? People’s SCL meters could be anywhere on the house, so…

As for the general comments regarding cell phones, WiFi, etc… That all may be true, but no one is requiring that you have WiFi or a cell phone. And if KEH’s question was “does anyone else have concerns”, clearly your particular answer is ‘no’. Which is fine. As for imanon’s points regarding data gathering and your response to it… It’s concerning if you’ve just got the attitude of throwing your arms in the air and burying your head in the ground. I’m sorry to hear that you don’t have concerns about all the data gathering (which you can do things to help, btw; VPNs and Tor to name a couple) companies are doing. That ambivalence is part of the problem.

It is interesting that you both attack someone that was just asking if anyone else was concerned about these risks that were noted in the film and certainly plenty of other sources. I think KEH was also speaking to his/her desire to opt out and the perceived sneakiness of someone found in his/her yard attempting to replace the meter. These are all valid concerns, whether you agree with the health risk part or not.

Magazines, your browsing history, your own use of WiFi and cell phones, and credit card tracking are all things that you do have some control over. If SCL is forcing folks to use a controversial meter and people like KEH or imanon aren’t asking questions, we’re headed in a bad direction. Maybe KEH should have said RF radiation, if that makes it more clear to folks talking about radiation from the sun and what not. Totally missing the point. Regardless of your political leanings, I think we can all agree that the government (FCC, in this case) isn’t always acting in our best interests. (I call out the FCC as the body that determines ‘healthy’ vs ‘unhealthy’ amounts of RF radiation.)

Be open to those that question the status quo and want the power to choose.

If you never heard of Lake kachess, then I suggest you visit it before they pump it down.
The State has already spent 3.5 million of tax payer dollars, maybe not your dollars if you don’t own property, BUT they plan on spending millions more when and if they get approval for the pumping plant.
And regarding Salmon which can not enter the lake because there is a Dam, even after Washington state lost in federal court and is required to eliminate barriers to Salmon, the State wants to pump the lake down another 80 feet and does NOT want to build a fish ladder.
READ ABOUT IT. LAKE KACHESS PUMPING PLANS.

This sounds really interesting. I love everything of old Seattle so I hope someone can shed some light on these establishments. Pull tabs, pickled eggs, nuts under heat lamps, old school joints. I don’t miss the smoke though! Modern Seattle was crafted on napkins in Franco’s Hidden Harbor on Lake Union.

Are there any straight up taverns left anymore? No, not the “Lumbersexual” hipster joints.

I’ve noticed this as well, I think that something’s changed with that light, it seems like it used be triggered by traffic (coming up from the port I think as it was always trucks) but now seems to change way more often and for a lot longer each time.

I heard someone from Union Gospel Mission interviewed. He said every night the “love van” goes out to the homeless camps with socks, hot chocolate and offers of a bed. They have empty beds to offer but get few takers. Folks don’t want to go inside because they can’t do their drugs or drink, or they have a dog, or they are so mentally ill they think the CIA wants to imprison them. I think we need to enforce the no camping and no shooting up drugs in public laws. The Mission says folks come from other places and call our city “Freeattle” because they can camp anywhere they want, do drugs and no one will stop them. Start enforcing the laws and word we get around and folks won’t come here from all over. By law we can’t force people into treatment. We need people smarter then me to come up with real solutions. I too won’t go downtown to shop or eat. I don’t feel safe and I don’t like the harassment from the some aggressive street folks. Last time I drove downtown at night to eat, I had to dodge several either stoned or mentally ill people who just wandered into the street in front of me. I spent time in India and it appalls me that our city looks like the the street scenes I experienced there. We just need some cows wandering the street and some rickshaws.

My issue with the homeless/druggies. Sorry, don’t have any compassion for their self made problems. I have 3 relatives with mental health issues. They’re productive citizen’s living on their own. Why? Their FAMILY’s take care of them. Where are the families of all these people?? Sure, they’re not legally responsible but in my book they’re morally and ethically responsible. Where are they?? If the family member was a famous sports/movie star do you really believe they would be ignoring them??? I work at a big company. Work around lot’s of men and women who didn’t have the best of childhood’s. Are they bothered by their past? u bet, but they’re drug/alcohol free productive members of society. My other problem with these people: ACCOUNTABILITY. Growing up I was taught that if we made a mistake we learned from them and did better next time. What I see is NOBODY being held accountable! They’re being told that they’re all “victoms” and don’t worry they’ll get everything for free. My compassion goes to the REAL victom’s those, who have truly fallen on temporary bad times. They’re the ones that I want to see get helped. The news did a story a few months ago on an eastside woman that fell on hard times-got temporary housing and financial help. She got back on track and is now volunteering at that agency. THAT’S the type of person that I’m glad to see given help.

Have fun volunteering in our Café preparing sandwiches & salads, and interacting with our guests. Fast-paced, efficient, and friendly person wanted for Friday from 8:30 – 12:30pm. Make a difference in your community while having fun and building friendships!

I read Jim Wright often and his quite thoughtful in his approach. He doesn’t mince words and backs up his arguments. Jim also doesn’t come at these issues from a dogmatic point of view and his personal background is not one that would suggest such.

This is a particularly insightful column regarding the extremes of society and their political proclivities.

I just turned 65. I am signed up for Medicare and have bookmarks for a lot of websites with information. Rather overwhelming. Anyone have suggestions for Medicare Advantage policies? Or part D? Or do I just stay with basic medicare? I don’t have any major health problems.

This smell has been very strong the last few days, all over WS (Walt Hundley all the way to North Admiral). Reminds me of blueberry muffins but not in a good way. I’ve filed a complaint with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency as WSB suggested in this thread (https://www.pscleanair.org/262/File-a-Complaint) and encourage others to as well. It might be a sweet smell but I doubt it’s healthy.

Reading Partners is a literacy nonprofit that mobilizes community volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to struggling elementary student readers.

No experience is required to volunteer! We seek volunteers who can commit to just 1 hour/week. Tutors are paired to work with the same student and are provided with an easy-to-follow curriculum that includes all of the books, worksheets, and step-by-step lesson plans to teach an effective lesson. Reading Partners also has a staff Site Coordinator who is available to support tutors at all times. Volunteers make an enormous impact: on average, students double their rate of learning while enrolled in the program.

Currently, we have a high need of tutors in our South and West Seattle Elementary schools (Highland Park Elementary, Sanislo Elementary, and Beverly Park Elementary). Available session times run from ~8:30AM – 3:00pm, Monday-Thursday.
