Any suggestions on a date/place to meet up and organize? Seems like Sunday was mentioned in several replies. I would suggest late afternoon or early evening might be a good time to start.

Is the ‘bump’ snark a way of expressing frustration because no one was answering you? How about you do some research rather than post here and follow the suggestion of complete strangers.

They really need to put an actual barrier of some sort instead of the double lines, or find a way to enforce it and hand out some tickets. I’ve seen so many complaints about this behavior. Apparently some people just don’t care and will never change. It is maddening when I see people do this, and it also causes people who did get over safely before the double white lines to aggressively block these cheaters, which is a daily recipe for road rage.

Reading Partners is a literacy nonprofit that teams up with under resourced elementary schools to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to struggling elementary student readers. We do this by bringing in community volunteers to work with students for a minimum of one hour each week. We serve two schools in west Seattle and have a critical need of volunteers, with 30 students waiting to be matched with a reading tutor.

We would like to welcome community members to a Reading Partners Open House! Come enjoy local baked goods, get an inside look at an active Reading Center, and learn about Reading Partners! Discover how you can make a difference in your community on February 8th from 11:00 AM- 12:00 PM at Sanislo Elementary (1812 SW Myrtle St, Seattle, WA 98106).

As part of Seattle Public Schools’ current master planning for the upcoming Building Excellence 5 (BEX-V) levy, the district is beginning to determine what schools will be improved, replaced, or created. SPS is projecting an increase in the high school student population of approximately 8% over the next 7 years. This works out to 1,600 students or the equivalent of one additional high school. Studies are currently being undertaken for this new high school to be located on and adjacent to the Memorial Stadium property next to Seattle Center, an area that will soon be served by three updated high schools in north-central Seattle (Ballard, Lincoln, Roosevelt – this will be the fourth). While this is where growth is expected to occur, it will not meet the needs of communities that are currently underserved. Students in these communities need a different approach; for many, the current system is not flexible, personal, or relevant. Graduation rates need improvement. The current situation supports the school-to-prison pipeline. Meanwhile, taxpayers are faced with skyrocketing property-based taxes. Change is needed.

Unofficial estimates put the cost of this new high school at over $150 million. It is being presented at some school board meetings as a fait accompli, although as some School Board Directors have noted, a decision on whether a new high school is actually needed has not yet been considered or made. There are alternatives that do not appear to have been given consideration, study, or public discussion. For example, our existing school buildings are not used to their full effectiveness. High schools are normally used for less than 1/3 of daylight hours; simply put, they are underutilized. Meanwhile, schools of all kinds suffer from lack of funding for repairs, expansion, staffing, etc. The following approaches seek to address those while providing improved learning experiences, flexible work environments for teachers, greater learning opportunities, flexible locations, and increased sustainability:

Classroom utilization: Classrooms typically remain vacant for one out of every 6 periods each day when they are used by teachers as an oversized office for planning. By providing teacher work or collaboration spaces outside of an empty classroom, general classroom utilization/capacity can be increased by up 20% (10% may be more realistic). This will have little to no impact on students’ experiences.
Class Periods: By extending class periods beyond 1 hour, transition time is reduced which both significantly increases the quality and time of classroom instruction/learning, it eliminates unnecessary non-instructional time. For every discontinued transition time, and ignoring the increased effectiveness of instructional time, the time saved for each is 3%. If classroom time is increased by this amount, a week of schooling is saved. If the school day is shortened, more time is available for evening classes. Increase utilization/capacity by 3-12%.
Evening Classes: Holding classes in the evenings offers students greater chances for worksharing (during regular business hours), increased mentorship opportunities (outside of regular business hours), alignment of hours with parents who work outside of the standard 9-5 day, and also for students who need or choose to work to support themselves and their families. For a not-insignificant percentage of our students, this would be of real benefit in many ways. It would also increase utilization/capacity by 16-80%.
Saturday Classes: Benefits are similar to Evening Classes. Increase utilization/capacity by 20%.
Summer Classes: Benefits are similar to Evening Classes. Increase utilization/capacity by up to 39%.
    Total potential increased utilization/capacity: 159%
    Total capacity needed: 8%

The above approaches suggest ways to increase capacity by over 150%; fortunately we only need a small fraction of that. Some or all of these approaches can be implemented to more than meet all anticipated growth while offering choice and real benefits to students, teachers, and families. Further, the monies saved by not spending $150+ million on a new high school can be saved or spent elsewhere to address capacity and maintenance issues in middle and elementary schools. By simply providing teachers with the space to work and prepare outside of a classroom that remains empty for one out of every six periods each day, capacity needs could be more than met. This approach alone could be implemented in the existing high schools over a single summer, and in total cost less than 1/200th of a new high school. The new high school is neither necessary nor does it align with the district’s goals of sustainability, flexibility, equity, or fiscal responsibility. Why are we to consider an expensive new school that will – yet again – remain unused for over 2/3 of the time?

Perhaps most importantly, providing increased flexibility and improved learning experiences and environments have great potential to improve both retention and graduation rates. This increased flexibility in both location and application can provide real benefits where they are most needed – in our underserved communities.
People “do not take kindly to a heavy handed top down approach” by our governing agencies. However, we look to our elected leaders to bring forward ideas and concepts for public discussion and analysis. At the end of the day we look to you to make decisions, either directly or through a public vote on a levy, bond, or initiative. I encourage you to bring some or all of these forward for departmental analysis, board consideration, and public discussion. Students, teachers, and families require options and choices. Please give these (any others) careful, thoughtful consideration before the decision is made to put an expensive and unnecessary new high school on the upcoming ballot to taxpayers already facing dramatically increasing tax bills.

    Sincerely,

    Lee!

Of course you judged, Mark47n, both the kid and Cabe. I’d even call your post a rant. Your broad statements about modern day parenting based on your own experience are completely irrelevant. That kind of reasoning is why Brett Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court. All the old men simply remembered their own similar “youthful indiscretions” and gave him a pass. You’re doing the same thing by assuming that Cabe’s son was “doing something that brought a watchful eye onto him” just because you could remember acting “belligerent” when you were his age. Maybe the security guard was overly aggressive. Or maybe he was completely right and reasonable. Either way, I guaranty it had nothing to do with how you acted as teenager.

    Hi!
My family is thinking about moving and I am looking at houses in the High Point neighborhood, near 31st and raymond area. Looking throughout West Seattle as well but there is a particular house I am interested in, in highpoint and I don’t know that area as well as some of the other WS neighborhoods. We live now right on 35th and are looking for a little quieter, more neighborhoody feel, a a bigger place than we have now. Friendly neighbors, walk-ability, parks nearby for our seven year old to plan in. Any High Point residents have any reviews of the area? Highlights? Cons/drawbacks to the neighborhood? Thanks!

was at QFC in Westwood Saturday when one of the contracted security guards approached my son and said something to the effect of “you can’t steal that… you have to pay for it… here’s a basket, use this”.

it was a bit hard on my son as he then felt like he was being watched and was anxious. i do admit that he was dressed fairly shabilly, with a hoodie to hide is bed hair (he is a young 16 and doesn’t quite understand why it’s not a good idea to wear a hoodie over your head in a store) but still, it’s the QFC policy to not harass their customers like this. you have to be outside the store before they are allowed to accuse you of stealing. the fact that the security person crossed the line with a lone kid (e.g., a vulnerable population) is a warning sign that authority may be an issue for this security staff – and it’s why i brought it up with the management at the store (who were very understanding).

i was told that the the guard is going to get some additional training by their company.

yet, it is just another case of corporations paying folk to oppress other folk.

I grew up in & go a lot to Japan where customer service is legendary, so returning to the states, I see a lot of service that’s not even up to par. The first job I had after moving here was a bagger at Safeway. I’ve had fancier jobs before but I always tried my best at the job at hand. The first impression I had of actually living in the U.S. was that everybody was “destined” to be at their dream. “Oh, I’m an actor but I just do this for rent.” “I’m headed for a full ride scholarship but I want a nicer car.” “I’m the next Michael Jordan but need some beer money.”

I’ve been blessed with a great career that I’ve earned. Looking back, my advice? Folks, your entire life is an interview, 24/7. 365. …and be prepared to get lucky. Even as a cashier.

OK, roll the video of my cringeworthy “moments”.

Customer service is really hard work and it’s probably difficult sometimes to make friendly yet light comments. I especially enjoy it when the cashier says “Oh, that looks really good!” Or asks, based on things I’m buying, if I’m going to make a particular dish. Recently I was especially appreciative of a comment and offer of assistance from a cashier. My husband has developed a healthy snack preference that is ridiculously expensive because it’s just small servings of 3 veggies and some cheese chunks in a little plastic tray and you pay an exorbitant price for the convenience of it. I had been thinking about buying some little divided containers and just assembling them myself but had been procrastinating. As I was checking out the cashier looked at the expensive little tray and volunteered that she really liked all those ingredients also and that she was going to get her own containers and make some and I said that the little packaged ones were ridiculously expensive and she agreed and asked if I’d like her to show me where to find the little containers. I didn’t take offense, I really appreciated it and it was the impetus to do just that.

Then Senior Center of West Seattle is in need of an awesome volunteer to lead our Food Bank distribution on Tuesdays. This position requires organization of our food donations that come from the West Seattle Food Bank, helping to get folks checked in, and working with other volunteers to get the food organized and displayed for distribution on Tuesday mornings, about 2 -3 hours weekly. Based on the weekly inventory, you will also call in the order to the West Seattle Food Bank on Monday afternoons. This is a rare opportunity to get involved with our amazing Senior Center in an extremely rewarding role – helping our community to get food they need and appreciate. Ideally, this person would start on Tuesday, 1/8/19 and get trained with our existing lead volunteer. This is an ongoing, Tuesday morning commitment, working 8:30-10:30, and calling in the order on Monday afternoons.

The entire stretch of 35th Ave SW is a showcase of SDOT’s utter incompetence in policy, planning and execution. Most of it just a patchwork of homeowner delegated sewer patchwork, multiple different surface types, a botched Move Seattle levy boondoggle, a world class collection of potholes/ruts, etc. It is the single most frustrating thing about living in WSEA for me (I guess I have it good).
