I’m very sorry to read what the OP had to endure. It’s hard for me to comprehend what led the kid to say something like that to someone’s face. This is way beyond some snotty comment that a child would spill out spontaneously.
Teenagers will be what you teach them to be. Their behavior is almost always a reflection of their parent’s behavior plus the environment they grow up in. Casually chalking up what happened to the OP to “Teenagers will be teenagers” is exactly the reason how things got screwed up in the first place.
