skeets, thanks for the clarification. And it appears to be something of a nice Jeffersonian turn of phrase that wasn’t particularly debated by anyone. Unlike the concept of “liberty” and “pursuit…”, which were hotly debated with regards to non-males, non-whites and the issue of slavery.

Which is to say, maybe it wasn’t debated NOT because it was an obvious assumption, but that maybe it wasn’t controversial compared to the inferences that took precedence over it during the discussions.

In other words, if you’re spending more time trying to figure out if someone with merely a different skin pigmentation is worthy of protection of your most basic of laws, exactly what weight does the concept of “life” have?
