UPDATE: Rescue callout for crash at California/Manning

12:33 PM: SFD and SPD are at California/Manning [map] for a collision with an initial “rescue extrication” dispatch. Updates to come.

12:39 PM: One person’s been extricated. California is completely closed at the scene, between Manning and Spokane. We’re on our way to find out more.

12:37 PM: We’re told the driver of a blue car – not shown – hit the light-colored car that is shown in the photo above. SFD is gone, traffic is reopened, and one police car remains, awaiting a tow. We’re checking on the condition of the person who was extricated; the medic unit was canceled at one point, which suggests injuries were not life-threatening.

6:36 PM: SFD tells us the driver who was extricated is a 47-year-old woman who was in stable condition when taken to the hospital.

Was it a stolen car trying to get away?

No, it was just a person driving a Hyundai, who remained on scene and spoke with police.

Did they have to cut the person out of that car? That would be the only reason the top was removed. Was the driver of the blue car found to be at fault? Surely they were ticketed.

Yes, as mentioned in the story, “extricated.” Don’t have other details, am trying to track down some more info but it seems this was dispatched as a relatively standard collision response, one SFD unit, some time before it hit our radar when they upgraded it to “rescue extrication” to get the driver out.

I’ve always heard the joke that they use the jaws of life whenever they can because it a cool tool they rarely get to use, but the last few crashes I’ve seen reported and noticed these used looks like the doors could have been opened fine.I assume the person must be incapacitated to not be able to unlock a door, but why not just break the glass and unlock it/open? Seems safer and faster, not to mention the car could possibly be salvaged.

Thanks for following up! Did you confirm there was only a driver in the car? I saw the scene from a distance as they were extricating, I thought it looked like SFD was trying to access a front seat passenger. They chopped off the front passenger door along with the roof.

That’s the only person who was treated. Usually SFD will mention if there were others in the vehicle.

There was a daughter and a mom in the car. They got T-boned. Daughter was driving and she was okay. Mom was in the passenger seat and she was the one who got extricated.

Sorry, comment time is over.
