Thanks to Dylan for sending that video of a humpback whale seen from the Bainbridge ferry around 5:45 am. Likely the same humpback that Kersti Muul just told us is southbound off west-facing West Seattle, seen in the Lowman Beach vicinity a little while ago, “close to shore.”

Thanks to Susan for the photo. She called to tell us about a dog stuck on the rocks off Beach Drive near Harbor West (the condos on pilings), and a crowd gathering to figure out how to rescue it from the rising tide. We were away from the desk at the time but after returning a little while later, we heard the situation mentioned on police radio, with word the dog had been rescued, so we didn’t head that way. Then late tonight Susan sent photos, explaining that the dog apparently is known to swim to those rocks and back, but for some reason got stuck this time, “until a paddle boarder and kayaker paddled out to it to coax it off the rocks and back to the shore.”
Just four days until West Seattle’s biggest party of the year fills the heart of The Junction with sights, sounds, shopping, sips, food, fun, and thousands of your neighbors at West Seattle Summer Fest – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (July 10-12). Among this year’s new features – an expanded roster of ways to avoid going thirsty! As always, the Beverage Garden will be up by the main stage, on California north of Oregon. New this year, check out The Porch – an all-ages food and beverage zone on SW Alaska west of California, with beer, wine, cider, and hard agave (all offered at the beverage garden too – the menus for both areas are here). You’ll also be able to enjoy beverages as well as food from The Junction’s year-round restaurants/bars, many of which will have sidewalk cafés – see that list on that same page too. And a free way to stay hydrated is available too – water-refill stations – see the locations on the festival map above, and bring your water bottle (or look for Summer Fest merch). The festival officially starts at 1 pm Friday, but you can get a preview by wandering the streets after they close at 4 pm Thursday, the night that’s become known as Summer Fest Eve. See you there!
The sixth and final FIFA World Cup match in Seattle is over – and that means the road-work pause on certain Seattle streets (as shown on this map) is too. Here’s the reminder from SDOT:
Beginning Tuesday, July 7, construction activity on many Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) projects will resume on many city streets and sidewalks following the temporary pause that helped keep Seattle moving during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As projects restart, people traveling around Seattle should expect to see more work zones, lane shifts, and temporary traffic revisions in some areas. We encourage everyone to plan ahead, allow extra travel time where construction is underway, and travel carefully through active work zones.
WHAT TRAVELERS SHOULD KNOW:
As construction resumes, everyone can help keep Seattle moving safely by:
-Following posted signs, detours, and traffic control.
-Allowing extra travel time where construction is underway.
-Slowing down and watching for construction workers, as well as people walking, rolling, and biking near work zones.
-Planning ahead before heading out.Drivers should also be aware that the first weekend after construction resumes coincides with Revive I-5 work, which is expected to increase traffic on nearby streets and detour routes.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Seattle’s first FIFA World Cup a success. The temporary construction pause helped keep people and goods moving during one of the busiest periods in the city’s history.
As projects resume, we appreciate your continued patience and care as crews work to deliver transportation improvements that will benefit Seattle for years to come.
One West Seattle project affected by the pause was the Morgan Junction EV-charging lot – while work has continued on the lot itself, the related dig on Fauntleroy Way had to be put on hold.
That’s the west side of 45th SW, north of Wildwood, where “early work” in this part of the Fauntleroy Creek Culverts Replacement project is under way, according to a Seattle Public Utilities reminder circulated late today:
Beginning the week of July 6 and continuing for approximately three weeks, crews will continue excavation and utility installation activities within the work area. This work is part of the Early Works phase of the Fauntleroy Culvert Replacement Project.
During this time, crews will use construction equipment, trucks, and materials to excavate the area and install utility boxes for various utility providers.
What to Expect
-Work hours will be 7 AM to 5 PM.
-No street parking will be available within the work area.
-Local access will be maintained.
-Large construction trucks will be entering and exiting the work area to support excavation, drilling, and concrete placement activities.
-Noise, dust, and vibrations.
Major work is currently scheduled to start early next year – that work will close part of 45th for up to two years. The culvert beneath 45th, as well as a section beneath California SW to the east, will be replaced and enlarged in hopes of helping salmon.
5:37 PM: No visual yet (aside from X clips like this) nor full ID, but for those who thought the World Cup flyover jets might have been the Blue Angels – same type of jets, F/A-18 Super Hornets. We saw them over West Seattle twice, after they took off from Boeing Field, and when they headed back for the actual flyover just before 5 pm.

1:11 PM: For the next few hours, we are at Seacrest to update you on the Water Taxi status as hundreds head downtown for Seattle’s final World Cup match. 140 were already in line when our team member arrived a short time ago, so don’t procrastinate if you’re headed here. (Everybody made it onto the run that just left – Doc Maynard’s capacity is 279. Its twin Sally Fox is serving the route today too.)
1:21 PM: Sally Fox arrived a few minutes ago, with only about 45 in line.
That run left at 1:31 pm.
1:52 PM: Doc Maynard is leaving at capacity.
We never got an answer to our question about extra shuttles; those appear to be arriving at capacity.
2:22 PM: Sally Fox left a few minutes ago at capacity and Doc Maynard arrived two minutes later. Note that street parking is full for blocks in both directions so have someone drop you off!
2:41 PM: Doc Maynard left five minutes ago at capacity.
3:02 PM: Sally Fox left five minutes ago at capacity, and Doc Maynard arrived four minutes later. So far the “every 20 minutes” promise is being kept.
3:17 PM: Doc Maynard left with room to spare, and the line is getting smaller, so we seem to have hit peak travel volume, with less than two hours left to match time.
3:38 PM: Sally Fox just sailed away with 250 on board, so nobody was left behind.
4:24 PM: We’ve ended dock watch. Doc Maynard left at 4:02 pm, almost at capacity, and Sally Fox sailed at 4:20 with 160 on board. Fighter jets a short time ago, too.
Three West Seattle Crime Watch notes:
GENESEE HILL FIRESETTER: This report via phone – a man tried to set a tree on fire at 47th SW and SW Genesee this past hour or so; 911 was called, police responded, but, the witness said, didn’t arrest the man because they had no evidence, and he claimed he was just trying to light a cigarette. Partial description: gray hoodie, blue mask, 5’7″ to 5’11”.
CAR BREAK-INS: A texter says cars were “broken into again on 33rd Avenue between Andover and Charlestown, not many valuables taken but some sunglasses and other items.”
CAR PROWLER INTERRUPTED: Also via text – this happened Friday night on 47th SW in Seaview – the texter interrupted a car prowler: “They climbed into our unlocked car parked in the street … wearing a balaclava. He ran to a white sedan when we yelled. It was surreal and unsettling, but everyone is OK.”

9:20 PM: Seattle Fire has a water-rescue response headed to Alki Avenue and 64th SW after a report of someone hanging onto a capsized watercraft – possibly a kayak, per dispatch – about 50 yards offshore.
9:29 PM: SFD responders report another kayaker appears to be towing in the person who was in trouble, or trying to.
9:34 PM: Rescuers, including an SFD boat, are deciding where to take the kayaker once he’s out of the water.
9:36 PM: They’re going to move a medic unit and battalion chief to Don Armeni Boat Ramp and take the kayaker there for evaluation.
10:15 PM: The kayaker was reported to not need/want further treatment and their kayak was to be returned to them at Don Armeni. … Adding a photo of the SFD rescue boat, and kayak, posted in a comment.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup’s Seattle leg will come to a close tomorrow with the USA v. Belgium match kicking off at 5 p.m. The two teams will be competing for a place in the quarterfinals – the USA’s first time in this position since 2002.
In light of the big day, the city will continue some of its previous game day traditions, but also plans additional street closures, fan zone operating times, and watch parties in anticipation of larger crowds tomorrow. Here’s what to know if you’re going to or through downtown, whether you have match tickets or not:
Fan celebrations will commence at Pier 58 tomorrow morning starting at 10:30 a.m. accompanied with DJs, fan activations, food, drinks, and more.
Fans are invited to participate in the USA “March to the Match” taking off from the pier around 3 p.m. SeattleFWC26 recommends that fans without tickets to the match itself remain at Pier 58, or will be directed to exit the march before the crowd reaches Seattle Stadium.
Some changes will be made to fan celebrations including the opening of the Pioneer Square Pedestrian Zone (map above) 30 minutes earlier, at 12:30 pm, and a new watch party in the Chinatown-International District dubbed “Kicking it in the CID.” The party will be hosted at Hing Hay Park, with doors opening at 4 p.m.
SDOT plans to close additional streets including portions of Alaskan Way beginning in the early afternoon and lasting through the duration of the march. (Details here.) Additionally, the northbound SR 99 exit to Dearborn Street and Alaskan Way will be closed until the march is out of the area. Generally, SeattleFWC26 recommends that for traveling downtown, drivers should consider taking the I-5 or SR 99 tunnel.
For West Seattle residents looking to get downtown, the West Seattle Water Taxi route will be providing additional service from 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Boats will depart from each dock – Seacrest here, Pier 50 downtown – every 20 minutes, but the King County Water Taxi advisory notes that if boats hit capacity, they will depart early.
If you’re not heading downtown but want to watch the match with other fans, we checked around for watch parties; Ounces already has one in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, and other venues planning watch parties include Admiral Pub (2306 California SW), West Wings (2329 California SW), The Westy (7908 35th SW), Beveridge Place Pub (6413 California SW), and The Bridge (California/Graham) will be showing the match. SEAVIEW: Adam sent this today:
I know that coyote sightings have increased this spring and summer. This one was farther north and we suspect it may be the one that we think killed our cat a month ago. It was about 5:50 PM on the 5th. It was spotted on the corner of Southwest Brandon St and 44th Ave Southwest near the West Seattle Nursery.
My concern is there are families and pets walking around and are vulnerable to a predator like that. Fortunately, it did have a fear of humans and my wife and I chased him down south toward Graham St.
Another warning to those in the neighborhood to keep their small animals indoors or monitor them if they are out. Our beloved cat Buster wasn’t so lucky.

That’s the view looking through the barricades at the north end of today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market, toward where the market will be held next week on the final day of West Seattle Summer Fest. It’s standard now for the market to be located one block north of its usual spot on Summer Fest Sunday, but this year it’ll be a bit different, because – as we first reported last month – SW Oregon will be closed to through traffic at California, so you’ll be able to move seamlessly along the entire stretch of the festival grounds. The block where you’ll find the Farmers’ Market on Sunday is where you’ll find the main stage on Friday and Saturday. And the extra festival space on SW Oregon means “wraparound” outdoor cafés for Shadowland, Dumplings of Fury, and Snapdragon, plus bonus food vendors – with offerings including sandwiches, ice cream, and “pineapple drinks.” The Farmers’ Market hours will be the same as always, 10 am-2 pm, and overall festival hours on Sunday will be 10 am-5 pm. More previews in the days ahead, as we get ready for Summer Fest Eve on Thursday (streets close by 4 pm to start setup) and the festival beginning at 1 pm Friday.
Just got a note from an Alki resident reporting discolored water. No incidents on the Seattle Public Utilities water-trouble map, so this could be sediment (rust) stirred up from hydrant use (SFD has certainly had a busy 24+ hours). If you notice it, always report it to SPU’s round-the-clock center at 206-386-1800, as there’s also always a chance it could be first indication of a system problem.
1:48 PM: Thanks for the tips. Multiple SFD units and SPD are at a crash scene near Salty’s (1936 Harbor SW); no details of the crash yet but avoid the area for a while.
2:21 PM: This crash involved a car driver and motorcycle rider. We’re checking with SFD regarding injuries. SPD radio indicates the scene is not yet clear.
