2 days till Junction QFC opens: Sign’s up

Two days before the grand opening of the Junction QFC supermarket in Capco Plaza at 42nd/Alaska (map), the sign on its west side has just gone up – thanks to Brian from TouchTech Systems in The Junction for the photo. As noted here last week, the ribboncutting is set for 7 am Wednesday. We also have a footnote on our story about Westside Pharmacy closing as its owner and staff move to the new QFC store’s pharmacy – Westside (California/Brandon; map) has posted a sign saying its doors will close for good at 6:30 pm Tuesday, as they work to transition the prescriptions in time for the new pharmacy to open the next morning.

At this point, I’m just thrilled that the sidewalk will finally open up after all this time!

YES! Trying to cross the street one block down the hill was a pain in the arse! I <3 QFC over Safeway!

  • WSM September 14, 2009 (5:41 pm)

    QFC: the store nobody wanted.

  • WestSeaGuy September 14, 2009 (6:54 pm)

The store nobody wanted?!?! I for one wanted it. I am tired of the only real west seattle food markets either requiring me to sort through lackluster produce like the Jefferson Square Safeway or pay significantly more at either Met Mkt or Thriftway. I do like those stores, but prices on nearly everything are a good deal more.

In addition, I am happy for the QFC….it sure as heck beats the HOLE and the empty Huling Bros bldgs….I welcome the extra life and verve this complex will bring…We need it because a good part of West Seattle is beginning to look like an abandoned Detroit neighborhood!

Now I don’t have to shop @ the ghetto Jefferson Square Safeway anymore (home to the worst designed parking lot ever). Yay.

  • JenV September 14, 2009 (8:42 pm)

countdown to Jefferson Square Safeway’s imminent closure in 3….2….1….

QFC sure is opening some nice-looking stores, what with this one and then the new one in Ballard on the Park (or whatever it’s called) on 24th. Safeway is going to look somewhat unattractive in comparison.
So, yeah, QFC’s spendy, but I like some of the Kroger stuff there, and they seem to have good flowers.

Funny, but the Admiral Safeway is a lot more ghetto than the Jefferson. I’m not sure even a remodel would help it. Go figure!

  • WSB September 14, 2009 (10:18 pm)

It’s scheduled to be torn down sometime in the next few years, project/market conditions pending – with a brand-new store built – so I doubt you’ll see a “remodel” there – TR

Where is the parking? Is it underground?

  • ellenater September 14, 2009 (10:33 pm)

Yep. And on a side note, it smells like chocolate. Concrete setting smells like chocolate cake! Yum.

    Yay, QFC!

  • WS Dog Lover September 14, 2009 (11:09 pm)

Well said WestSeaGuy!!! I feel the same way! QFC is wonderful for product & ready made food! With any luck our new QFC will make the other stores around our little hamlet try to step up their quality controle a little. P.S. Love the new editing option!

Actually there was to be a floor of parking above the store. Haven’t completely toured it yet but I did check with QFC spokesperson Kristin Maas this afternoon to confirm that the parking garage is open – entry is “midblock” on 42nd BTW – and in discussing where we’ll meet for a media tour pre-opening on Wednesday, she mentioned taking the stairs “down” into the store from parking. So I think that means you’ll be parking ABOVE the store. More in another followup tomorrow morning with some interior photos we just got – TR

FYI; I wasn’t exactly talking about the building.

  • brandon September 14, 2009 (11:30 pm)

Check last week’s grocery flyers for your $5off/$25 coupon good 9/16-22.

  • Sotavento September 15, 2009 (12:12 am)

Anyone knows if they are hiring?

  • Sue September 15, 2009 (6:40 am)

I’m thrilled that it’s opening since it’s close enough for me to walk to. Even though Safeway is a block closer, I won’t shop there. I didn’t realize it was 24 hours too until seeing the photo – that’s good news too.
    .
Sotavento, I think they were hiring months ago for their positions. A quick check of the QFC jobs section on their website shows no jobs in WS, but you could always check.

Very happy to have them in the neighborhood!

  • FoxyDiamond September 15, 2009 (10:35 am)

HEY! Did you kids get a $5 off coupon in the mail? I didn’t! Boo Woo! A co-worker of mine got one & she is in Admiral. I am closer to the h o l e but it is still my neighbor! Anyone remember the name of those coupon books that come in the mail? Best of or ??? Thanks…..have a swell day!

  • jiggers September 15, 2009 (10:53 am)

Ooooooooowie, I can’t wait for the traffic that’s going to clog up the Junction so more.

  • Sotavento September 15, 2009 (10:54 am)

    Thanks Sue.

I am a big fan of QFC! Now I can finally get my Lamb fix just a few blocks from my house.

  • Scar September 15, 2009 (11:46 am)

Jiggers: Complaining about traffic? You live in a flippin city. Get used to it. Density is your friend.

    If not, there’s always Bellevue.

  • brandon September 15, 2009 (12:27 pm)

The coupon came with the supermarket ads that come on Tuesdays, or Wednedays in the mail. It was packaged loose in the cluster.

  • Michael September 15, 2009 (3:23 pm)

QFC was ranked the lowest in quality and price of all the local stores. Enjoy!

  • Sue September 15, 2009 (3:47 pm)

I’ll have to look in the recycle bin to see if I got the coupon – thanks for mentioning it!

  • bj September 15, 2009 (4:24 pm)

So, you have to take stairs to get to the store from the parking area? Guess we won’t be buying much if you can’t take a cart to the car. Not sure how it will work….will just have to check it out this weekend. I have a feeling prices will not be very good. But will give it a try.

    Anxious to hear comments tomorrow.

Sorry, comment time is over.
