mellaw6565MemberNR and others – where are you? Care to give us your take? Is there really a lot you can say – any new revelations? Not from where I sit.

GenHillOneParticipantI ditto everything above – am appalled by the whole night. I’m just mad, so will go try to chill out and escape into Project Runway at 9:00.

MissKMemberYes I like how she didn’t expand on Obama raising of the taxes. Nice that she left out the those making over $250k.

Ah, yes, Project Runway. The perfect intellectual refuge for the insightful Barackophile.

MissKMemberAre snarky snide comments part of registering as a Republican??? Come on already!!

GenHillOneParticipantkw – I want to support our local guy with his endeavor. You can chose not to. There are plenty of folks in Alaska that don’t support their girl Sarah either. Just chill and enjoy the rest of your evening.

hellonwheelsMemberI cring everytime they refer to John McCain’s values….eeeeeek!
Love the Republican Party…..no one mentions John McCain’s multiple affairs during his first marriage….
We witnessed a little preview of a small McCain explosion when he abruptly cancelled his interview with Larry King because of CNN’s Campbell Brown interview…now they are out to attack the “Liberal Press”……so guess Fox will get all interviews from now on……fair and unbiased news at last!!

LightsOutMemberThank you all medical experts on Down Syndrome. If I am reading these posts correctly, I guess a womans place is in the kitchen after all.

JennyMemberWow. She’s a natural!
> Also, she talked about veto power. She has not mentioned bipartisanship – a key to not having to use your veto power. Sounds like more divided government to me.
Oh man. I would LOVE to see a president who uses the veto pen more than once or twice in his presidency. (Yes I’m looking at YOU, GWB.)
And, sad to say, federal spending & the overall size of government tend to go up when either Democrats OR Republicans have all the power.
I did notice that she made the blanket statement that Obama wanted to raise everyone’s taxes. She also said she turned down the money for the Bridge to Nowhere. Both statements have been disputed by Obama’s campaign for several days now, and I was disappointed that they didn’t modify the applause lines slightly address the current state of the debate. But hey, if nothing else, those statements will be beaten to death during the debates.
Overall I loved it. She’s as good a speaker as Giuliani, easily able to infuse the speech’s words with a natural feeling, she’s willing to go on the offensive, and she does it with an aw-shucks deadpan style. Like a friend on another site put it, she’s like a less-seasoned version of Ronald Reagan.

mellaw6565MemberLights – I don’t think that was the point. I hate the “glass ceiling” argument that a woman can’t be successful and a mother at the same time. I used to hear that sentiment from male lawyers towards female lawyers all the time – can’t make partner if you’re taking time to raise kids. So, I would never make that insinuation about Palin either – there are plenty of women that do handle both and work a lot harder than Palin does. She has staff, etc… to help where many poor women work 14 hours/day and still have to raise their children.
However, I think what was being said about her child with Down’s Syndrome is that the environment may be overstimulating with noise and lights, which can be a bad thing with Down’s kids. And that may demonstrate poor judgment in that she doesn’t seem concerned (or possibly uninformed).

I’m no expert, but maybe k’s confusing Down’s Syndrome with autism?

JanSParticipantwell, folks…thanks for the insights. I missed the entire evening of television spectacles. Went to the Triple Door to hear some absolutely wonderful music. Much better than listening to a nasal Alaskan twang ;-)

mellaw6565MemberExcellent story by the AP about the exaggerations and inaccuracies at the RNC:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080904/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_fact_check
Here’s the first example in the story:
PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”
THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

CPMemberI don’t think anyone here was claiming to be a Down Syndrome expert, but it is a pretty well known fact that they are NOT supposed to be in rooms that loud for any long period of time. Kind of hard to argue that it speaks well of her judgment. If she’s planning on winning women voters by catering to the lowest common denominator with her pandering, her snide comments, her underhanded insults and shameless parading of her baby – as a woman I’d prefer she stay in the kitchen.
I don’t ever want to hear about Obama’s hype being built on rhetoric again. This is a prime example of the same thing for all the wrong reasons if you ask me. If I’m going to be charmed by a politician it better be for hope and not out of fear and lies.
September 4, 2008 at 3:51 pm #636723
beachdrivegirlParticipantCP I hear you there. However, I am a bit awed at the fact that she is appealing to some women. there were two women @ work this morning talkign when i came in about how they think they are going to change their votes for her b/c she seems like the girl next door….
September 4, 2008 at 4:00 pm #636724
CPMemberI think it’s symptomatic of a decline in the self esteem of American women as a whole, honestly. These women are no better than men who voted for Bush because they could have a beer with them. Well I’ve got news for you, Bush doesn’t go to your bar. And Sarah Palin doesn’t live in your neighborhood – and Alaskan women have made it pretty clear that you wouldn’t be too happy if she did. Choose based on who will fight for your rights not who looks more like you.

JoBParticipantLightsout..
a woman’s place is anywhere she wants to be…
a downs syndrome baby’s place is at home… not in the center of a political convention.
What was she thinking?
Oh, yeah.. the same thing she was thinking by having her daughter’s 17 year old high school dropout “betrothed” there… political advantage.
Mellaw6565..
looks like the AP doesn’t react well to having one of their reporters arrested and jailed:)
might have been a slight tactical error on the RNC’s part … arresting and jailing reporters isn’t viewed so well by those who think we should have a free press ;~>

beachdrivegirlParticipantCP I might just have to steal your line and have lunch with my co-workers. Quite honestly i was so floored by the conversation i didnt know what to say b/c i did not want to sound confrontational b/c it was obvious that they do not follow politics.

TrickParticipantDid anyone see this clip from John Stewart?
This answers how the Republicans do such a great job at the truth.
September 4, 2008 at 4:59 pm #636729
CPMemberBDG – you go right ahead, with my blessing! :)
Trick – I did. I was just aghast, honestly. I was hoping someone would post that clip. Just shocking. Well, no I should say I WISH it was shocking.
