GinaParticipantIf there ever is a West Seattle historical meet-up, everyone should bring their old yearbooks and class pictures. I would say that either 25 years in West Seattle (all in one stretch or sporadically, or 50% of your life living here qualifies you as an old-timer.)
I would dread going to the Lucky store with my mother. The library is next door, and I was allowed 15 minutes to go there and choose some books and come back while my mother shopped.
I would want to go home to read the books. But Mom would get into the Doris line. The line where time stood still while Mom and Doris would gab and gab with each other!
The N&N Variety was the giant underpants store. One display window had underwear in it. And there were underpants that weren’t that wide, but they were looooong! Straps could have been sewn to the tops and made into a modest swim garment.
That was the no touch store, and I don’t think they cared to have you even look at the goods. And I never saw anything in there for a nickel or a dime. Even Necco’s were 15 cents. It was not the store for kids.

JanSParticipantSomeone mentioned Winchell’s…does anyone remember when the Admiral Starbucks ws Winchell’s?
December 5, 2008 at 7:30 pm #621542
marianneParticipantEverything mentioned brings back so many memories. I grew up half a block away from Mac’s. An old timer’s meet up would be a blast. West Seattle certianly has seen changes. Walking down to the beach with my babysitter cutting through Schmitz Park to get there. Once we got to the beach we would get tacos at Taco Time or go to Pepperdocks, sometimes we would see Slick Watts sitting on a lawn chair on top of the Pepperdocks building.

pigeonmomParticipantBefore Saffron Cow and Endolyne Joe’s there was a little grocery there. I can’t recall the name but I remember the old, sloping wooden floors.
That would have been around 1991.

bebecatMemberI remember when there was a Safeway store down between the Chelan Cafe and the Blue Eagle. I learned to drive a go-cart in the parking lot on Sundays. Also I remember that the Taco time on Avalon was the Gill’s Burgers. You could get a Gill’s 49er which was a Hamberger, fries and milkshake for 49 cents. There was a hotdog stand by West Seattle High School too! Does anyone remember the name?
December 6, 2008 at 6:41 am #621545
JeraldParticipantThere was Zesto’s across from WSHS where the McDonald’s is now.
And remember the Prairie Market (now PCC) where you used a grease pencil to mark the price on each item?
Also, about Pat & Ron’s — I, too, had to go in there for help when my car broke down. I was about 18, wearing short shorts and a halter top (hot summer day). Yikes.

JPParticipantI remember the Safeway down by the Chelan. Are we giving our age away? Do you mean Zesto’s across the street from the high school? Or Pennys Dog House up closer to Charlestown. They had the best burgers ever!!
December 6, 2008 at 6:53 am #621547
bebecatMemberI think Penny’s Dog House….I was thinking Dog House..but thought I was mixed up with The Dog House downtown
December 6, 2008 at 6:56 am #621548
JeraldParticipantThat Safeway’s a new one for me, I guess I mean too old a one. It’s hard to imagine.
I’d totally forgotten that was Ernst at the Junction. I just now remembered Ernst at Westwood Village, where Staples is now.
And the Wig-Wam! I remember!
How about the now-Safeway space on Roxbury. I remember 2 linked stores on that site, placed at right angle to the current building. One was a grocery store, the other…? Somewhere in between times there was a Larry’s Market.

JPParticipantOh…The good old days!
December 6, 2008 at 7:07 am #621550
bebecatMemberThere was a old tavern across the street from that Safeway down by the Chelan. When they knocked it down my brother found old bottles and money in the rubble. The West Seattle Golf Course use to be the old Seattle Dump. In the 60’s my Bro and his friend and me use to dig for old bottles down in the ravines. Found some fabulous stuff.

JanSParticipantso…Jerald…are you sure you’re not a “Jeraldine”? short shorts and a halter top? I’m trying to picture a Jerald in that – lol…
December 6, 2008 at 1:06 pm #621552
ZenguyParticipantHow many Safeways did West Seattle have? My mom used to work at the one at 35th and Morgan that is now Uhaul. She once had a woman return a ham because it was too salty…the ham was completely eaten and she had used the bone for soup…lol
I miss the Benbow, they had the best pan fried oysters. We used to go there all the time as kids and eat in the dining room. My brother and I loved to throw pennys off the bridge in the hall and loved to peek into the bar that was done like the inside of a Spanish Gallion.

Kayleigh2MemberI wish I could go today and get some Arctic Circle fries with special sauce!
The Freedom Church kitty-corner from there (35th & Roxbury) was a Safeway where if you went into the bakery and asked sweetly, they would give you a free (small, hard) cookie.
WSB, how about a tab for Old West Seattle, with vintage pics and memories from your loyal readers? :-)

GinaParticipantJan, I remember when the Winchell’s on Admiral was a Christmas tree lot. Something must have been there before it was a flat, vacant lot, but that is as far back as I can remember it.
Every mention of a burger place reminds me of my mother exclaiming,
“Do you know how much ground round I could buy for the price of one of those burgers! If you want a hamburger, I will pick up some meat when we go to Skoog’s.”
December 6, 2008 at 3:32 pm #621555
bebecatMemberI remember when Linda’s Flowers on Admiral & California was Beesaw Carpets! I went to grade school with the Beesaw’s daughter!
December 6, 2008 at 3:36 pm #621556
ZenguyParticipantBefore Beesaw’s it was a drug store, I loved when the took the ‘d’ off of the neon sign and made it rugs.
December 6, 2008 at 4:25 pm #621557
TrukMamaMemberI remember Zestos from high school. What about Chicken Delight that was down by Morgan St.
There was also a butcher shop in the junction, i think in the area of Jan’s Beauty supply.

JoBParticipanti don’t remember any of this but being an amateur history buff which does include the evolution of businesses in an area.. i am fascinated.

Kayleigh2MemberYou may already be familiar with these, Jo, but some of my favorite sites for local history:
vintageseattle.org
historylink.org
seattlehistory.org
We are members at MOHAI and love it.
December 6, 2008 at 5:46 pm #621560
JiggersMemberPetco was a bingo hall and half of Easy Street restaurant was Joe’s restaurant.
December 6, 2008 at 6:16 pm #621561
wiseman70MemberAnyone remember Budget Tapes & Records, in the Admiral district. They had the first Asteroids machine, so that was a local hang-out before Amigo Tacos. Remember Taco Tuesdays? Those were fun times…
December 6, 2008 at 7:45 pm #621562
dapuffinParticipantWe’ve only been here since 1994, but if I recall correctly, the spot in the junction where JaK’s is was formerly “La Louisianne” and prior to that “Two Dagos From Texas”

JeraldParticipantJanS — Yes, I’m female. Just chose Jerald randomly, never expecting to be glued to WSB like this. It’s fun, though, like an alternate personality. I have a different one for ebay and my husband shares it, so “Jargoh” is bisexual!
December 7, 2008 at 4:24 am #621564
JanSParticipantit’s fun when you can be so many people at your whim, huh, Jerald :)
