Sorry to come so late to this thread. A walking friend (Angie) told me that this existed so I thought I’d check in. I am the daughter of the grocery store owner on 49th and Charleston. Our actual address was 4801 SW Charleston. We started the lease in about 1965 from Zorich Brothers. It was a booming popular grocery store until 2 Safeways opened in 70’s – They were put in above and below us on Admiral and California. They just killed our family business. In the late 70’s Dad tried to renegotiate the lease with the Zorich’s to no avail so he walked away. He began selling real estate and did well. We started off as a Thriftway and end as the Grocery Cart. I think we were also an IGA at some time. Dad really appreciated his customers especially when time got tighter. To help make ends meet, he had me learn how to cut meat and I got my license at 18, my 2 brothers were also very involved in the store – Monte was always at the check stand and Ron did the produce. Thank you for you recognition of the store.

Janet–check out the “I Lived in West Seattle Before it was Cool” group on Facebook. I think you would enjoy it.

Thanks for the Facebook tip – I will check it out. Hopefully you enjoyed my Dad’s humor as much as we did…He was so much more relaxed in the real estate business.

Totally enjoyed your dad’s humor…he was a very recognizable fiqure in West Seattle with that LARGE beige float of a car….I think it was a Buick!

Thanks for digging up this old post. I remember reading through the postings when it was first started and really enjoying the history of this this great community. While a newbie in comparison (10 year resident), it is fascinating to hear about the history and changes that have taken place.

What was in the building originally that now houses the teriyaki place at 35th and Fauntleroy?? Looks so 50/60’s and like it used to be a burger place.

Don’t remember what it used to be, but I worked across the street from there @ Gil’s…home of the .25 cent or burger .29cent cheese burger and .15 fries and .25 shake. That was the late 60’s. When Petco was an A&P grocery store and Northwest Art and Frame was smaller and called HiYu Art Supply. The Wigwam Store was where Sleepers is now. Fong Fong was across the street. That was a dingy place where NO ONE EVER ate. LaGrace where Cupcake Royale is and Rexall Drugs where Easy Street is now. Those were the days. I can’t believe I just said that.

Regarding the teriyaki place on 35th & Fauntleroy…Do you mean this place? It is a neat little building!

clark5080 is correct about the Teriyaki place.

I found out a few years back that it had been a real estate office, either through one of these reminiscing threads, or perhaps through my own research in old Polk’s/Cole City Directories at the downtown library.

One point of clarification on happywalker’s post; Easy Street was People’s Drug Store, with the moving Mortar & Pestle sign.

The Rexall Drug was Morton’s (now WSB sponsor Pharmaca)

Clark 5080…I was all over the Real Estate Office thing…I think a Realtor named Anne Bentrott brokered a Real Estate office there but I can’t remember the name or the years.

Jerald @ post #71 mentions a store at 49th and Dawson (Aske’s). Anyone with any additional info? If so, do you remember if they sold polished tiger’s eye stones? I live near there and the earth has been recently churning up some interesting specimens.
