I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while, but is it legal to park in a turnaround at the end of a dead-end street? We live on a dead-end street where there’s a turnaround and people are always parking in it (even though there’s street parking still) so it’s really inconvenient for people turning around, but I’m just wondering if it’s legal or not.

I’ve been trying to research this – so far, no luck, but I would find it hard to believe it would be ok to parallel park alongside a dead-end, because at the very least you’d be blocking the signage, and there’s certainly a rule about that. Anyway, if you didn’t already find it, here’s the directory of parking regulations …

There isn’t really any signage at the end of the dead-end (there’s just a dead-end sign up the street), it’s just a round turnaround so you don’t get stuck having to back all the way up. I know one of the cars that parks there does it illegally because it’s next to a fire hydrant, but I’m not sure if the other ones are and just like you, I’m not making much progress on finding an answer…

this is at the end of 25th ave near chief sealth, and we get lots of cars that don’t realize it’s a dead-end until they turn down 25th ave.

You might consider calling Parking Enforcement, whose number is on this SPD webpage, and ask them – I have a feeling they field questions a lot, better than getting dispatched to something that’s not a violation. If you do, let us know what they say – we can all learn! – TR
