JanSParticipantI thought it was great…here’s the text for those who have missed it :
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/09/obama-health-care-speech_n_281265.html
and the , IMHO, very weak rebuttal (which again stated some mis-truths, probably was taped before he heard the speech) :
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/26962.html
I don’t know much about Dr. Boustany, except that he was brought up on malpractice charges about 8 times, and is a believer in the “birther” movement…fine credentials.
and then there’s the fine gentleman from South Carolina, Rep. Joe Wilson (R) :
Lest some people think my links are all one sided, there’s this:

charlabobParticipantAnd to be even more two-faced (‘er, two-sided) — here’s a link to a valiant attempt by the re*’s to be hip by “liveblogging” their response to the president’s speech. It would be funny if it wasn’t pathetic. What is it with R’s and syntax? Probably too much time avoiding public schools. And LOWERCASELETTERS.

anatidaephobiaParticipantI loved the speech. Democrats need to make this happen, with or without the Republicans.
September 10, 2009 at 3:58 pm #676887
JoBParticipantdemocrats can make this happen…
hopefully with a few republicans.. but if not, we need to simply insist.
Our elected democrat representatives need us more than they need a few republicans
***
i just read the entire speech… to tell you the truth i wasn’t expecting much… but before dismissing it… you should too.
what has been missing before is that a public option IS the compromise position…
a compromise that i am personally not too happy about.
but i am happy to see regulation re-entering the health insurance industry so that those of us who have insurance can count on the insurance we pay for.
and i am happy to see a buying pool for those who can’t currently get insurance so that i won’t have to subsidize their care which is currently being delivered in the most expensive manner possible.
and i am glad to see the President finally standing up and saying unequivocally that there are those who are fighting health insurance reform for no other reason that political advantage..
and they are telling a pack of whoppers to do it…
and they have the backing of the health insurance industry because the industry wants to maximize profits…
maximizing profits for them means denying coverage for you.
Naysayers should take the time to read this speech.
You can still believe that if his lips are moving he must be lieing…
but you will have a difficult time finding reasons to disagree with the reform he suggests.

lizruMemberI LOVE the consumer protections. It’s about time. (Though I think they may make my current policy illegal!)
Would like to see us settle on one type of insurance (Medicare, V.A. style, free market) to save the crazy administrative costs that support multiple systems. Not this time.
Like the buying pool. It at least SOUNDS like individuals and small groups buying insurance get similar rates to large corporations.
Ugh! Wilson. Tacky! Read first, bellow later.
September 10, 2009 at 7:50 pm #676889
LoweryMemberI just listened to it. As important as everything else is he was talking about, one thing that really stood out was him giving credit to his one time presidential rival McCain for his idea and input. Like him or hate him, you have GOT to at least admit that was just a plain ol’ classy thing to do. How many can say that they’ve given “the enemy” due credit?
“…this was a good idea when Senator John McCain proposed it in the campaign – it’s a good idea now, and we should all embrace it.”

HomerParticipantAnyone else think this guy speaks better after only a few months in office than the last Bush did after 8 years? He is a very good speaker! I think this helps with his health care case, not to mention the facts!
September 11, 2009 at 5:28 pm #676891
JoBParticipanthomer…
the last Bush was never known for his speaking ability…well… not in a good way.
But i do think President Obama speaks well… in fact he may be the best presidential speaker in my lifetime… and that would be saying a lot.
September 12, 2009 at 12:06 am #676892
miwsParticipantI realize Obama *has* had his struggles with speaking at times. I believe it’s because he’s actually trying to put genuine thought into what he’s saying, for example answering a newsperson’s, or inteviewers question, rather than, for want of a better way to put it, since one is not coming to me at this time, “BS-ing” his way through, just to give a quick answer.
That being said, when the words are flowing smoothly for him, it reminds me of the way JFK, and many previous to him spoke. It’s like one can almost hear the inspiring music that is often played during a replaying of a President’s speech, even if the music is not being played during the original speech! ;-)

JoBParticipantmiws..
i was thinking of JFK and i am not sure that Obama isn’t the better speaker..
i still think JFK was cuter though…
Bobby didn’t speak as well as either of them but i really liked what he had to say.
and i don’t think there is anyone in my lifetime who could beat Martin Luther King for pure speaking power.
I don’t know if any of them are men i would have wanted to know.. but i sure enjoyed listening to them all.

JiggersMemberTypical Republicans wants everyone to fend for themselves on this issue. Canada has it right with their medical.

grrParticipantgreat speech by a great speaker. What REALLY became apparent to me is how, with TWO WORDS by a loudmouth moron, the Republican Party laid all their cards on the table. They have NO respect for this President. Plain and simple. Be it because of his age, race, or whatever. Probably the ‘fear of intellegence’ factor :)))
If you watch the replay…pay VERY close attention to the Presidents face when the outburst occured. Those three seconds sum up the amazing character of the man.

also…to be fair..I’m REALLLLLY getting tired of Democrats and their constant infighting and desire to self-implode. ARGH.

JoBParticipantGeez.. the italians do way better than we do and we all know what a corrupt and inefficient system they have..
and don’t tell me it’s just the italian diet…
the italians and french think the oil that comes with your packaged salmon is a condiment..
thank you Ken
I am passing this one along.
September 13, 2009 at 6:47 am #676899
grrParticipantactually, Job..the Italian Diet does have a lot to do with it. Almost NO processed foods. They also pasteurize their dairy products differently (lower temp for longer time), the result being it does NOT change the chemical structure (there’s an Alton Brown episode somewhere regarding it…). ‘Lactose Intolerance’ is practically non-existant in Italy…tho..many people in Italy smoke like freakin’ chimneys…
September 13, 2009 at 8:09 am #676900
JoBParticipantgrr..
i am sure the italian diet helps.. but their health care system is also considerably better than ours.. and cost them a lot less :(
September 13, 2009 at 9:08 am #676901
JanSParticipanthere’s a story…why we need to do something now…there but for the grace of g-d go I, for damned sure, as I’ve had a pre-existing condition since 1996..

JanSParticipantNicholas Kristof is one of my favorite writers for NYT..he has a new book out called “Half the Sky”, about the plight of women in various places in the world – China, Pakistan, third world countries. Reviewer said it’s possibly the best book she’s ever reviewed. I follow him on Facebook…

HMC RichParticipantI did not see the speech. I heard from one side it was great and the other that it was an attack in some areas.
The republican who called the President a liar was extremely stupid. There is something about respect for the office and office holder.
September 14, 2009 at 4:02 pm #676906
JoBParticipantHMCRich..
Jan posted a link to the transcript of the speech in post one.
read it for yourself…
i think there would be a lot less contention if we all read the content more often instead of listening to the opinions of our political pundits.
we may find we agree with the pundits..
but at least then we would know why.

MagpieParticipantA couple of personal stories about why I am for better healthcare options. My son has 2 part time jobs and no health insurance (he could buy it for 60% of his take home pay). He recently became ill. Looked at his options, not many, had to go to dr, called around and was told by both the Highpoint clinic and Harborview (sliding scales) that he couldn’t come in if he wasn’t already a patient and Highpoint told him they had an opening for a new patient in 6 weeks. I told him to go to the highline walk in clinic and negotiate a cash payment. He did that and they negotiated a reduced payment (he had to put it on his emergency credit card) because he was paying on the spot. His reduced payment to them was still $40 more than my insurance company would have paid them on our negotiated rate.
So, the dr ends up making more money from someone who doesn’t have insurance. It’s like the poor subsidizing the rich. What is wrong with this picture?
I know how fortunate I am to have good medical insurance (a trip to harborview last year was close to 50k) but it just seems immoral to me that the structure of what I pay is subsidized by people who don’t have insurance.
Same thing happened to my friend with cancer. The 80 percent that her insurance company paid was thousands more than my premera policy would have paid. Swedish wrote off the differnce as charity care, but they still got more $ than they would have gotten from me…(and she ws paying $300 per month as an individual payer because she didn’t have employer health insurance..)
There has to be a better way and I hope that Obama sticks to his guns and makes this happen or who knows who will be replacing him in 2012. I shudder at the thought….
September 14, 2009 at 7:22 pm #676908
JanSParticipantMagpie, when your son becomes ill, have him check out Country Doctor Clinic at 19th and Republican…it’s the best clinic around. They are lifesavers, as far as I’m concerned. If it hadn’t been for them, my cancer might not have been found until it was way too late.
They operate on a sliding scale, and can usually see you in much less time than 6 weeks. Wonderful doctors and nurses there. Sliding scale..$15 minimum, have an acupuncture clinic, their own lab, and pharmacy. I believe that an rx there costs something like 8 bucks. Love the place.
They also take insurances for those looking for caring, compassionate healthcare.
