The Velvet BulldogParticipantKinda looks like it might be Curly Dock:

But you who will know for sure? Anonyme will know! Quick! To the Botany Signal!

karenParticipantI don’t know but I would love to!! I have those nasties coming up in my garden. Deep roots!

Talaki34ParticipantThese are actually in my sisters yard. She was going to pull them this weekend, but until we know how they are spreading pulling might not be a good thing.
This JanS is about the only weed I don’t have. My yard has been blessed by Holly, English Ivy, Horsetail, Blackberry and a few other assorted very nasty weeds.
I thought Curly Doc too at first The Velvet Bulldog, but the leaves of this plant all seem concentrated at the bottom whereas in the pic above the leaves continue higher. Could be that the pictures I have seen just don’t show the leaves higher on the plant. Maybe it is a plant from the same family?
If this stuff turns out to be Curly Doc, my sister and Karen can invite us all to lunch because I guess you can eat it. LOL!

anonymeParticipantBulldog, I think you probably know more than I do, but thanks for the vote of confidence! FYI – I have a couple of Ribes if you’re interested…
That said, it looks like Dock to me. There are several varieties, including a native giant one. They all get tall, with characteristic ‘plumes’ of seeds which often take on a reddish cast. The plants in the pic look like they may just be developing their seed heads. Even though Dock is technically considered a weed, some people grow them ornamentally – they’re quite dramatic.
Deborah Madison has a recipe for “Spring Tonic Soup” in the “Greens” cookbook. I’ll bet dock (and maybe some stinging nettle) would make a great addition! There was an article this week in the NYT about the lack of nutrition, especially phytonutrients, in cultivated crops.
Sorry to be so wordy…good luck!

seaopgalParticipantAs noted, it is dock. If you don’t like it, you should definitely pull it before the millions of seeds mature and self sow. Use a fork or other tool to loosen the soil, and it should come out ok. Good luck!

seahorseMemberI only wish I could grow Dock as vigorous as yours! Are you close by the PCC in Admiral by any chance? I’ll use it!

Talaki34ParticipantThe Docks in the picture live (not for long, yippee) in Lacey.
