billzuehlMemberPeople of West seattle, let us gather together at the statue of liberty at alki,6:30-8:00 pm this coming thursday to give God the Praise!

sbreParticipantI do it whenever and wherever the mood strikes me, not something I’ve ever scheduled.
But I like the idea…

DBPMemberAre you suggesting a God Mob?

Looking at this, somehow I get the feeling that this is limited to a particular definition of divinity. Too bad. A national day of prayer that welcomes all beliefs to participate could be a really lovely thing.

datamuseParticipantThe National Day of Prayer is largely organized and promoted by a conservative Christian organization headed by Shirley Dobson.
It’s a nice idea and I wouldn’t attempt to dissuade anyone from participating, but I doubt they’d welcome my idea of prayer or the nature of divinity I’d direct it to.

I agree.

JulieMemberThe National Day of Reason (http://nationaldayofreason.org) is even less exclusive!

bluebirdMemberFocus on the Family has one purpose, to focus on your family and how you define it. I have but one prayer, for them to STFU.
May 3, 2012 at 4:02 pm #757143
DBPMemberWonder what people will be praying for this evening. Maybe I’ll go over there and ask them.

skeeterParticipantI attended Catholic high school in one of the red states. A student had written:
“God is dead”
“-Nietzsche”
in big black marker on the bathroom wall.
A few weeks later, another student wrote underneath:
“Nietzsche is dead”
“-God”
I thought it was pretty clever.

JoBParticipanti am told the card industry created mother’s day
but i celebrate it anyway.
it gives me much joy to celebrate my mother.
it’s doesn’t matter what Shirley Dobson’s motives were in creating a national day of prayer
what matters is what we do with it.
i won’t be attending the prayer circle at the statue due to other obligations…
but i do intend to add my personal prayers to those offered today.

datamuseParticipantI’m less suspicious of the greeting card companies’ motives than of Shirley Dobson’s, JoB. The greeting card companies just want my money. But Focus on the Family has done real harm to people I care about, and I can’t excuse that for what might otherwise be a nice gesture.

NFiorentiniMemberIt should be called The National Day of Superstitious Theocratic Pandering.
I’ll observe the National Day of Reason instead.
May 3, 2012 at 10:23 pm #757148
Spring ChickenMemberI’m agnostic… Days of Prayer and “interfaith” public prayers are based on the false assumption that everybody believes in praying to some kind of deity. But many spiritual traditions (including Buddhism and Taoism) don’t involve faith, prayers or a deity.

DBPMemberWhen is the “National Day of Reason” again?
I’ll make a note to be on the lookout for people being reasonable.
May 3, 2012 at 11:30 pm #757150
dhgParticipantFocus on the Family, for those who don’t know, seeks to split and destroy gay families on the grounds that they are morally repugnant. After they come for the gays then it will be…what.. the Jews? They preach from the old testament, from text that says slavery is just fine.
May 3, 2012 at 11:52 pm #757151
JulieMemberDBP, you’ve almost missed it! National Day of Reason
I’m guessing you’ve seen more people being reasonable than praying.
May 4, 2012 at 12:20 am #757152
DBPMemberI will infiltrate their little gathering on Alki. Then, when the moment is right, I will reveal myself for what I truly am: an Old Testament-hating, gay Jewish abolitionist.
May 4, 2012 at 4:02 am #757153
JoBParticipantdatamuse…
i am not excusing them.
nor am i likely to be praying for the same things they are.
May 4, 2012 at 4:09 am #757154
JoBParticipantDBP…
making sport of Christians only makes it harder for those Christians who believe in attributes like compassion and tolerance to speak up when groups like Focus on the Family capture National attention.
Can anyone explain to me how being more judgmental than the people you are accusing of being judgmental proves your point?
Or how alienating the group most likely to be able to change the national conversation about Christianity is in your best interests?
I don’t believe it is.
May 4, 2012 at 4:13 am #757155
JoBParticipantSpring Chicken
prayer is defined in many different ways by many different cultures and religions.
beyond that, prayer is individual
prayer looks like and means as many different things as there are individuals who declare themselves adherents of the world’s many religions.
how can any of us pass judgment on that which we do not know?
May 4, 2012 at 4:15 am #757156
dhgParticipantJob: humor, sweetie, humor. No one here is suggesting that Christians should not be allowed to marry or hold public office. Focus on the family actively promotes bullying in the schools, supports blocking partners from seeing their loved one during their last minutes in ICUs.
More judgmental? Far from it.

DBPMemberJoB . . . [sigh]
Better bone up on your irony.
Or iron up your boney.
Or something.
**************************************************************************************
Did anyone else go to this meeting besides me?
[crickets]
dhg et al., you’re really wrong on what this thing was about, what with all that talk of gay bashing and Focus on the Family and such.
Not that I blame you for speculating, mind. If I hadn’t seen it for myself, I probably would have drawn the same conclusions as you.
But that’s just the thing . . . I did see it for myself.
[Yawn]
Pix and details tomorrow.
Until then, keep JoB and me in your prayers.
Or your “reasoning.”
Or whatever the heck it is you atheists do.
May 4, 2012 at 6:19 am #757158
sboneParticipantOops, I missed it! Is this not the most personal of personal?
