My brilliant myrmecologist best friend has given me some great tips, many based on ant behavior. I have a tube of clear caulk on hand, and every time ants come in I track them to their source and seal the opening. Sometimes it’s a tiny, tiny crack in existing caulk, or a miniscule nail hole in an old floor. Recently they’ve been coming up from around the base of the toilet, so that needed a re-caulk. As WSB mentioned, meticulous cleanliness is essential, especially in regard to pet food areas. The ‘moat’ method for pet food dishes works great.
I also learned from my friend that ants love to follow ‘lines’ – such as electrical wiring, baseboards, grooves in flooring, joists, etc. That’s why you frequently find them coming from electrical outlets – because of the pattern, not the heat. You see the same thing outdoors, as ants run along hoses.
For those of you who hold some compassion toward our tiny visitors, I highly recommend a product called Orange Guard, available at TruValu. It will kill ants if directly sprayed on them, but will deter them if sprayed around the perimeter of the house, or any entry points. The advantage to this PETA approved product is that it is non-toxic and can be used indoors around kids or pets.

Thanks Jenwswa, yes it was me whose car he jumped on and yes, I did stick around to make sure everything was okay (because unlike a previous poster whose post was deleted I do not drive off and run over people!) Thanks for your kind words. My daughter and I are still very upset.

I’m sorry to hear that you were also frightened and intimidated by the man on 37th & Henderson this morning. I was walking along Henderson headed to the bus this morning and saw this man in the middle of street coming toward a woman in her car, yelling at her and throwing a rock at her car as she reversed and then drove down the alley. I called 911 immediately while the man jumped onto the front of another moving car, and confronted a woman and her young son as they got in their car. He also walked toward me asking if he was intimidating me. I don’t remember any honking, so I must have been there just before you. I didn’t feel comfortable waiting for police to arrive, but as my bus was going up 35th, I saw police headed to the scene and I received a call from police that they were with the man. They said several people had called 911. They were trying to reach the woman who had reported the man had jumped on her car. Sadly, this may have happened to several people. Please know that a lot of neighbors do care!

Blaming victims is strictly against WSB rules. But, unlike news-story comments, we don’t see most forum posts, as this is a reader-initiated area, unless they are flagged. If you don’t have something helpful, informative, or kind to say, when someone is clearly trying to vent about a frightening and frustrating situation, just move on to something else. To flag something, please e-mail us – editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks. – TR

Was I supposed to run over him? Really? I’m going to run over a person? He had his body right in front of and on my car that I would run over him. And by the way I did drive away and the police came right as I drove about a block away. I guess I should have figured that coming to the blog would have brought out the victim blamers.

We are looking for volunteer artists, but a small stipend may be provided if requested. Email me or reply to this post if you are interested, or know someone who would be! Thanks much!

Sugar ants in West Seattle are the great equalizer – something we can all bond over with our shared hatred and frustration. Admiral, Alki, Delridge, High Point, White Center, Arroyos, rich, poor, in bewteen, new house, old house, apartment – we all have ants. Sometimes I feel like the WS peninsula was built on an ant mound. My best methods thus far have been “Grants Kills Ants” and a vacuum cleaner (dustbuster them up, empty into toilet), as well as Clorox wipes to eradicate the scent of the trail. The Terro worked last year but hasn’t had as much of an impact this year so I switched to Grants. Also, check around electronics if you are not sure where a nest may be – they like the warmth. I had a whole nest inside of a surge strip and under a speaker.
    in solidarity!

I would be interested, but only if you had a female dog. We have two small dogs that are 11 years old. I have watched a male dog before, but they end up just marking their territory all over the house.

Is anyone interested in a couple of hours of outside work on Wednesday, June 1, from 8-10am? I have a blower truck scheduled to deliver 13 cubic yards of GroCo and we need two people to handle the hose. My husband decided it would be a good idea to break his wrist today, so he is out of commission. I will pay $40 (even if it takes us less than 2 hours). Just need someone to help keep the hose from dragging over and breaking the plants and to relay signals to the truck driver.

You guys should get over yourselves. You are intolerant of those who have views other than yours. Are you tolerant of other groups of people who’s ideas you do not appreciate? Why is it OK to be so personally critical of such an articulate person? I am tired of you snobs calling conservative posters trolls. Get used to it. One sure fire way to be blocked on your beloved blog is to support Israel. What does that say about your character? We are at war.

Julie, please look up the word “literally”. I haven’t heard of any bodies discovered that have been “shredded up”. And it’s “these”, not “these ones”.

If you prefer to enter only into discussions that are free of intellect, you should have no problem finding some. Alternatively, you and Betty could start one of your own.

I hold some pretty conservative views on certain issues, and I’m not afraid to say so. But when someone initiates a discussion with a post full of wild (unsubstantiated, inaccurate) accusations and assertions, with a healthy dose of proselytizing thrown in for good measure, and does so in a way that is not only factually but grammatically incorrect, then they’ve pretty much asked for any corrections that may come their way. Their, not there.

it seems our pesky little ants are persistent this season.

i thought i had baited them away.. but when we came back from a week in Ashland they had overtaken not only the house but the car :(

so.. today after picking up my garbage can to find them swarming beneath.. i baited again.. with a new (to them) bait.

I have been told we live on one huge anthill.. and everything i have seen leads me to believe that is true…

i know, i know.. sprinkle mint.. boric acid, diatomaceous earth, etc in their path… wash your floors with orange oil …

i have done that and still they keep finding their way in.

so if the pesky little stinky ants are plaguing you.. settle in for an ongoing battle and keep the panty supplied with a variety of traps or natural cures because they seem to figure out that the one i used last is bad for them and avoid it like the plague..

but if i put a new one out they consume like crazy…

I agree that keeping to the right except to pass makes great sense on freeways.. but on city arterials using the left hand lane as a passing lane works only until someone has to turn left.. and then those speeding up to pass have to come to a screeching halt…

i love to watch the road jockeys speed up to wait for me to catch them at the next light.. or better yet to come to a screeching halt behind someone turning left.

i try to resist the temptation to wave at them as i pass ;-)

wait for it … wait for it … a federal judge (Gonzalo Curiel) in a [no-]class-action suit has ruled that internal documents from Trump U must be released by June 2 (a separate suit alleging deceptive business practices brought by the NY AG is underway as well.) Trump, citing his comments about the Wall (no, not the Pink Floyd album,) accused the ‘Mexican’ judge of being biased because of his presumed Mexican heritage (let’s see, a square is a wrecked angle, so anyone with a Hispanic sounding name who appears to dislike rump must be Mexican,) Even still, rump said that being presumably Mexican is ‘great’ and ‘fine.’ (The judge was born in Indiana, which in Trumpworld is a ciudad in Mexico.) Trump suggested that the judge recuse himself because he has made so many ‘negative, negative, negative’ rulings that he must be ‘a hater’ of Trump. Due to the code of judicial ethics, the judge cannot respond.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/internal-trump-university-records-must-be-released-federal-judge-rules/ar-BBtB9Lf#image=1 (warning – put your orange-blocking sunglasses on; when I opened this page, it defaulted to a YUGE picture of rump, which is now burned into my retinas. btw, MSN is a great place for articles from a variety of papers that might otherwise charge for viewing articles.)

and, if you feel the American Dream is more of a nightmare, you shouldn’t read this NYT article … how many palatial homes does vulture capitalist Mittens Romney own while he off-shores his money to avoid paying for his fair share of what makes America grate? (yes, the misspelling is purposeful.)

can’t wait for his taxes to be released … anyone remember that the IRS audited Tricky Dick when he was the sitting president? Over 3 years, his income totaled around $900k but he had only paid $6k in federal taxes. He was required to pay something like $450k in taxes, interest and penalties. Spiro got audited too with similar results. This was how the ‘time-honored tradition’ of candidates releasing their returns got started. (thanks to Rachel Maddow!)

Exactly, VVT. I thought the keep right signs were ridiculous until I moved here and became acquainted with Washington drivers. Might as well post the entire drivers’ manual on roadside signs. It would be the first time some of them had ever read it. If they bothered to look up from their phones, that is.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

I have looked for Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness only to find a career, a mortgage and managing to keep my head above water. The latter being available to me in such an unpalatable form that it excludes the former. The american dream is being corrupted into the corporation nightmare. I don’t know if I will vote in November but I certainly did not caucus or vote in the primary stuff. Republican or democrat, small handed lying misogynist or lying cuckold lush, tv personality or career politician, they are part of the problem. I include Bernie because he ran as a democrat and now harvests the consequences. They are the weeds that have grown in the vineyard. I am disgusted that they are given the time and attention that they get. It is wrong that we vote with hope instead of consequences. We reward politician promises with our future rather than assessing them on ability and past choices and then wonder how they fooled us again. I can only get some solace in seeing the emptiness in their eyes when they glimpse that they are even more mired in the nightmare than the people that vote for them.

“Free College ? Really ? If i walked up to any Liberal downtown…”

Yes, downtown, where only the liberals go. Oh, I forgot to capitalize the L in Liberal like all the RWNJ emails do. Are people really so dense that they think “free” public education is actually free? Ever hear about “taxes”? We pay taxes and then that money is “redistributed” (as the Liberals would say) for functions that our representatives in Gov’t decide are priorities. Some people think education is a really smart way to use our tax money to improve society for all of us, even the non-liberals. Hence, extending tax funded “free” public education thru college. Sheesh!

Mostly, I just feel sorry for her kids.
