If you are familiar with the Clothesline in West Seattle, and have either benefitted from shopping there or donated clothes, you may or may not know our time in our current space is running out. If you have any resources, or know of any, that would provide us a new space, please contact the West Seattle Food Bank to let us know. Our lease in our current space is up THIS NEXT MONTH. After the new year, we will not longer have a place to operate. We look forward to any ideas or options that exist in the community to keep this wonderful resource going for our neighbors in our region. It would be a crime to see it disappear.

Most walkers work an equivalent of 10-30 hours a week, but you can take on as many or as few service requests or clients as you choose. Our walkers find the flexibility that our company provides to be an ideal way to stay independent and balance other jobs, clients, or school with the freedom of self-employment.

CM Rinck and a consortium of “non-profit Housing proponents, including builders, have proposed to amend the Seattle Comprehensive Housing Act to include Alki Beach as a Neighborhood Center. This NC designation is not appropriate for our saltwater beach community and will actually make it less enjoyable for visitors and residents. Designated as an NC, the point and beach area will be subject to pressure for higher density, which is already happening under current zoning law, from multi-family builders and their backers. If you believe this is not a good thing for Alki Beach, please email each of the nine councilmembers and Mayor Harrell.

The email below from Jessica Lang of the Housing Consortium was the follow-up to the meeting I attended last Saturday. Just to set the record straight, there was not unanimous support for Alki Beach becoming a Neighborhood Center (NC). Having said that, we did not have much in the way of local resident turnout.

In my opinion the meeting was more of a sales pitch than for fact-finding and I resented that. In addition to councilmember Rinck’s staff, of which there were several, the majority of people in the room represented housing organizations looking to build (definitely conflict of interest), density advocates, transit proponents, and one person that would outlaw cars completely. I have no argument with the NC (aka Urban Village) concept, in fact I rather like the idea, but I believe, as I think you do, that Alki Beach is not an appropriate location for that purpose.

Our councilmember, Rob Saka, is against an NC being sited at Alki Beach and would like to have as much public support behind him when the NCs, as part of Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan, are debated at council.

An email campaign from a significant number (several 100, at least) of residents opposing the NC, targeting individually and collectively the nine Seattle councilmembers and the mayor, will be critically important. Please reach out in your own words (feel free to copy parts of this if you wish) through your email distribution lists to enlist as many “No Alki NC” email writers as possible.

Here are some arguments, and I’m certain there are others, that may be used in the emails.

The beach and point area have limited parking as it stands. This will be exacerbated if multi-family housing as proposed under NCs is permitted, especially if off-street parking is not required in new structures. The new Alki Elementary School will double its number of students and staff with only 15 parking spaces allotted. This will put added pressure on what is already an untenable situation and the Beach is very difficult to reach via most modes of public Transportation.

Metro routes that do service the area already crowd Alki Avenue at the beach. During certain times of the day, they take up almost a full block of parking space, furthermore, where they park for “driver rest breaks” detracts from access to and the view from several businesses. Additional bus routes will create a traffic nightmare.

A grocery store / market is an integral component of a NC. Both Safeway and Metropolitan Market are little more than a mile away, with bus routes serving both. There have been two attempts in past years to establish grocery markets, both failed.

We all know what’s going on these days with drug stores; it’s not likely one would be enticed to move into Alki, given their financial instability and ongoing consolidation.

What type of business would have to move into Alki with a sufficient number of full-time, decently paid, employees to attract retailers of non-staple, non-discretionary goods to move in? Where would that business be housed?

Alki Beach is a Top Ten Urban Beach, a historic Seattle gem, and a revenue generating tourist destination. let’s not let that be ruined.

    Add other points…

I just wanted to drop a recommendation for Strong Hammer & Brush for exterior house painting and carpentry here, in case anyone’s looking to get that type of work done. At the very beginning of this year, I got estimates from several companies to paint the exterior of my 1940s Highland Park home and to rebuild exterior stairs that were starting to rot. All estimates I received were in the same ballpark, but what I appreciated about Peter from Strong Hammer & Brush was his attention to detail, personability, and communication regarding what he and his team would do to get my home ready for painting and to preserve the longevity of my home’s exterior (I still have cedar siding, which I love). He also asked me thoughtful questions about my preferences for stair design and offered some color suggestions where I was waffling, which I appreciated. We communicated back and forth via email regarding the contract and scheduling, and Peter was quick to respond to any questions I had. Prep, painting and carpentry began on schedule and was completed pretty quickly. My house looks so lovely—I’m very happy with the work that was done. The only work that wasn’t anticipated in the initial estimate was repair of a window casing and sill where rot was discovered during pressure washing. The additional cost for materials and labor seemed very reasonable, and the repair looks great. My new exterior stairs are very nice—they are solid, really attractive and the design goes well with the style of my house. I highly recommend reaching out to Peter Shank if you’re looking to have painting and/or carpentry work done! https://www.stronghammerandbrush.com/

I’m visiting from out of town and was delighted to find a Burt Reynolds bangle in a shopping cart at the Jefferson Square Safeway today, Aug 14. It looks like something from a keychain. Of course I would love to keep and cherish this icon but know that someone is undoubtedly missing him. If you are missing your Burt, send me details describing the bangle andi will mail it to you.

I lost a handmade paring knife at Lowman park the evening of 8/12. It has two red stripes along the wooden handle (see picture). It was made by a dear family friend and I foolishly brought it to the park to cut a dessert I made. I’d love to find it again! Matching knife handle

Is anyone available to do about an hour or two of moving about 10 heavy items (and possibly move and organize that same basement a little and more later) in order to clean up a basement floor? Tomorrow, Wednesday August 13th would be good, if possible, also Thursday are both days I’m around between 11 and 3 pm.

    Thank you!

That sounds wonderful! Outdoor programs can be such a great way for preschoolers to learn and grow, and I’ve seen how fresh air and nature spark curiosity. It’s a bit like Pedro Vaz Paulo business coaching — the right guidance in the right environment helps people (and kids!) thrive. Lincoln Park and Schmitz Preserve are fantastic spots for nature play in West Seattle.
