I just experienced this, too a couple months ago at Cactus — it was so weird and uncomfortable!!! There was a gal dining next to us with someone sitting next to her at her table who she ignored the entire meal to interact with someone on her I-Pad, live-chat… she was talking quite loud and showing the other person her food and around the restaurant, had her waiter interact with the person, it was like a freaking side-show.

I understand the Sue scenario, corner table, chatting low, I wouldn’t mind that I don’t think but this was too much. I was annoyed as was my dining companion. If this becomes commonplace (god forbid), maybe they need to start making separate sections for this. I get to go out so infrequently, I would not sit through another meal like that again but would ask to be moved.

Anyone with a lick of common sense knows that if you have a pet door you run the risk of a raccoon invasion. I would have blocked the door the very first time this happened, not several visitations later. There’s something really off about this announcement; perhaps, as GHO mentioned, this is merely an advertisement for the exterminators. Killing an entire family of raccoons was entirely uncalled for and displays malice – not grief.

Your professed ignorance of exclusion techniques (while simultaneously providing ample habitat) is laughable; your first paragraph entirely contradicts the last. Any animal with three babes in tow will be aggressive if threatened. Next we’ll be hearing how you had the coyote hunters out after your free-roaming cats disappeared.

There are plenty of wildlife horror stories out there, most of them easily preventable. What really needs to be curbed is the destructive, aggressive and wildly unpredictable behavior of that most prolific of species – homo sapiens.

the root issue in washington is the liberal D’s failed the middle class. they failed to fund education as priority #1, and allowed college tuition to rise at unprecedented rates for years.

college tuition did not rise this go around because the senate provided a counterweight. if not for the counterweight tuition was likely to go up again. the choices the liberal D’s made had a significant adverse effect on the middle class.

yes the sun is out time to go out and enjoy it!

Anyone have any advice on how to sell a car by owner? I have always traded in my previous car so this is new territory for me. I do have a listing on Craigslist that has garnered little to no interest. Thanks in advance for your input and advice

WF, you make it sound like WA is the only state where tuition exploded over the last decade or two. It’s been going up EVERYWHERE regardless of who’s controlling the legislature in any given state.

Here’s an article that attempts to explain it. And btw, there’s plenty of blame to go around.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-john-ebersole/college-tuition-rise-costs_b_1635834.html

PS – As a general statement, costs have been outpacing CPI for decades. When I started college in ’79/’80 it was $206/qtr. for a slate of 15 credits. By the time I was finished it had already doubled…

when did this idea that it is everyone else’s responsibility to get the he.. out of your way so that you don’t “waste” time become so popular?

if you are annoyed by actual customers in grocery stores..

shop online and have your goods delivered.

i am one of those who will not finish my financial transaction until after the clerk has finished processing my goods

because i have too often caught the slip between what is listed on the shelves and what rings up on the register.

you can either watch the till or fiddle with payment…

yup.. i am one of those women who insists on getting the bargains she shopped for..

not just the illusion of bargains on the shelf and the unpleasant surprise on the receipt…

and no.. i don’t think i should have to bring my groceries and receipt back into the store after checking it to make your transaction quicker.

it’s not my job to make your transaction quicker.

What you are calling wasted time here used to be called time to hear yourself think.

I just got back from small town America where the social transaction during a purchase is just as important as the financial transaction…

there are a lot more smiling faces there.

    and interesting conversation..

using that wasted time to think instead of fuming about the inefficiencies in the line ahead of you really does make a difference

    just saying…..

Although I cannot speak for KCDRC, I can attest to the professionalism of the Pierce County Dispute Resolution Center in Tacoma. I have to believe that KCDRC would mirror that organization.

PCDRC turned out to be an unprecedented and welcome surprise as an organization. Highly trained, thoroughly competent, and very motivated individuals – both male and female. Every session emphasized the voluntary nature of the meeting, the ground rules that all participants must abide by (and they were sticklers in enforcing those protocols), and the objective to achieve a collaborative solution – all at no cost to the participants.

It was one of those experiences that, if I was ever to consider a major career change, this was an organization that I would want to belong to. They provide extraordinary service to others.

I would simply offer that you should not hesitate to avail yourself of this service. Good luck…

Talaki, you have brought up some excellent points.

One thing I’ve thought of in the past, but hadn’t come to mind while reading/participating in this discussion, is the time it takes to perform all of the various tasks while using a debit card, compared to the time it takes to write a check.

One other issue with the various debit card systems, is although many, if not most will allow the customer to swipe their card once the clerk starts scanning their purchases, some don’t allow it until the transaction has been totaled.

Similarly, in regards to the “yes/no hell”, some systems will allow the customers to start inputting their cash back, etc info in as items are continuing to be scanned, and then once totaled all that is needed is to confirm the total.

I switched to a debit card from checks/cash because I listened to the banks about the safety/security of my money and how I would have better control over my finances.

What the banks avoid talking about is how the cards cost the merchant and the consumer money while giving a false sense of what the value of that money really is or if there is any real time saved in its use. And there is always this:

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/personal/2012/11/05/debit-card–numbers-pins-stolen-at-pos-terminals/1675795/

Start to finish, it took 40 seconds to write a check to Hyundai Motor Finance. This is the general process of using a card in a grocery store today:

    1. Swipe the store card.

    2. Pick the type of transaction.

    3. Swipe the debit/CC.

    4. Enter Pin if using a debit.

    5. Answer Yes/No if you want to donate money to…

    6. Answer Yes/No if you want cash back.

    7. If yes, enter the amount of cash.

    8. Yes/No if you agree with transaction.

    9. If using a CC, sign your name.

**If using a card, keep in mind that you are reading and making decisions as you go. Also think about how many different machines there are and the sequence the questions are presented, where the buttons are placed and if the machine forces you to use a stylus. Any changes and the process will slow down.

**All three types of transactions use data transfer. How fast the transfer is depends on the type of system used, time of day and daily updating.

**Advantage of using a card; information can be put in while items are being scanned. Disadvantage; while you are reading and choosing how to process your transaction, your eyes are off the viewing screen. Unless there is a large error, most problems would go unnoticed especially if doing a bigger shopping.

Thanks to skeeter, I had to acknowledge that I am firmly in the camp of the “Crap, they are writing a check” moaners. I decided to take a trip to the Safeway on Roxbury to find out why I felt so much frustration. What I learned is that I unconsciously view the check writers as the exclamation point on an already frustrating shopping experience.

    • Long lines.

    • Clerks that serve as cashiers and baggers.

    • Clerks that have to comment on each item.

    • The slow clerks. These are the ones that let you know they are not happy to be there/are poorly trained and to demonstrate this; they offer indifference, weak smiles, the crawling scan punctuated by well-timed sighs or the visual scanning of airspace in the hopes of spotting someone that can relieve them from their Hell.

    • Customers who come unprepared and require multiple price checks, exchanges in product or who forgot something on the other side of the store.

    • The customers that swipe cards knowing that they will not work or have limited funds available which of course means that they have to put items back until the card will accept the transaction.

    • The customer who slips in the line of 15 items or less with 20 items in their basket only to look confused and shocked when someone actually calls them on it.

    • The customer who audibly sighs and rolls their eyes when the elderly person is writing a check.

    • Store layouts that require us to spend more time than necessary to get what is needed so that they can try to sell us items we don’t.

    • Stores that put in U-Scan lanes so that they don’t have to hire more employees or use the ones they have more efficiently.

    • Stores, community colleges/tech schools who turned their backs on the clerk training programs.

The absence of a great shopping experience only reinforces the perceived benefits of using a card as opposed to writing a check. Instead of voicing my dissatisfaction at the shopping experience I direct my frustration at someone who probably is just as unhappy as I am.

It is illegal to park in a bike line. A bike lane is considered a vehicle lane. It is equivalent to someone parking in a motorized vehicle lane.

Title 11 – VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC

    Subtitle I – Traffic Code

Chapter 11.72 – STOPPING, STANDING OR PARKING RESTRICTIONS

    11.72.415 Trail or path.

No person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle, bicycle, or other device on or adjacent to a trail, path, lane or other facility or way which has been designated for the use of pedestrians, equestrians, or bicyclists, in such a manner as to obstruct or restrict the use of any portion thereof: Provided, that authorized emergency and maintenance vehicles are excluded from the provisions of this section when engaged in necessary emergency or maintenance work.

Report it to the non-emergency line at SPD each time it happens. There is no excuse for parking in a bike lane.

“Every activity I do has an opportunity cost – a different activity that I can’t do.”

That makes me a little sad for you. Life isn’t a zero sum game. Thinking about what you don’t have instead of what you do have makes it harder to notice those moments when the unplanned/unexpected miraculous things happen.

“It’s a waste of time for everyone -”

You can’t save time no matter how much you think you can.

I mainly use the Burien clinic due to proximity and parking, but my preferred primary care provider is PA Melissa Szocik at the Downtown Clinic (near 5th & Union). I’m one of those who prefers a PA or ARNP for general issues. She’s very warm and funny, which puts me at ease. She listens to my input and doesn’t act like a gatekeeper when I want to see a specialist. She’s not afraid to consult with one of the MDs on something complex. Plus, she’s easy to get in to see. I find the Burien clinic to be understaffed, even the PAs. I can never get in to see my official PC MD on a semi-urgent basis, so I’ve pretty much only seen her when I’ve needed a preventive exam. However, I do like using Burien for my allergy immunotherapy injections. The nurses there are experienced and friendly. Also, the Downtown clinic doesn’t have radiology services, which is a pain (no pun), so I recently had to make a separate trip to Burien for x-rays. (I could have gone to Capitol Hill if I’d driven to the Downtown clinic, but I’d taken the bus.)

Margaret, you can be seen at any GHC primary care clinic and it doesn’t affect where you can go for hospital care. Of course, if you see a specialist at Capitol Hill and you need hospital care from them, it would likely be at VMMC. GHC is also affiliated with Overlake in Bellevue, Harrison in Bremerton and Silverlake, Providence in Everett and Olympia, and St. Joseph in Tacoma.

Full disclosure: I work for Group Health, and I love my job, but I’m certainly not its biggest cheerleader when it comes to getting care here. Overall, I think the care is very good, but don’t get me started on how long it can take to get in to see a specialist if it’s not a life or death situation.
