August 15, 2008 at 4:03 pm #634218WSBKeymasterSecond on the 911 call. We have written in recent months about a couple of police reports filed regarding water balloons tossed at passing cars, and while a few people wrote comments suggesting, hey, lighten up, that’s just child’s play, authorities would absolutely disagree with that one, as would those involved in some situations we found reported in other states where injury or death resulted because someone got into an accident when startled by what was thrown at them. — TR
August 15, 2008 at 3:22 pm #634217MargLMemberWell that’s a good reason to call 911. You do not throw stuff at passing cars.

MagpieParticipantI do believe that the majority of pedestrians that have gotten hit in West Seattle (and killed) were in the crosswalk, either marked or unmarked.

ToddinWestwoodMemberthats just what you have to deal with. I think our daughter was on the waiting list for quite a while before we got her in a good program.
Cant wait for “big kid” school sign up!

ToddinWestwoodMemberBiggest question is: Are you guys just going to keep the bar area a “tasting room” or are you going to open it up and make it a friendly “tavern” atmosphere?
We went the other evening and though we liked the Red beer, the place felt cold and uninviting. Will we go back? Yes.
I know you guys just opened, I just didnt get a feel for whats going on yet or what you are trying to achieve.
August 15, 2008 at 6:56 am #634216guidosmomMemberThanks! It is the Park Hamilton Apartments. The reason I was asking is I was live by here, and was walking my dog by this afternoon when a huge water balloon went flying down, really fast, missing me by a few feet. I didn’t think much of it, but it was going REALLY fast and had it hit my small dog it probably would have injured him. I went home, told my partner about it, we walked near by again and saw a male and female, perhaps in their mid 20s, throwing water balloons at people and cars passing by from the 3rd story. Had this been kids I would have not thought much, but this could have caused an accident. My partner confronted them and they acted like they could care less, and continued to throw balloons. I was going to report it to the apartment manager. Thanks for the info!

FullTiltParticipantI am not sure of Big Al’s policy, but the old Rim was kid friendly. It is not really a pub. It is a brewery with a tasting room. I have seen many kids inside the old PAc Rim. I would just call Al and ask.
August 15, 2008 at 6:42 am #634215WSBKeymasterIf you haven’t gotten it already … one way to do it is to use the King County Parcel Viewer (too long a URL to paste here, just google it) and search for California/Atlantic intersection, then click on the site, and usually if you choose the property detail report, it will show you the name of the apartments as well as who owns ’em.. BonnieParticipantMy daughter goes to Little Pilgrims too and we love it. The year we got in there wasn’t a big wait list but there seems to be this year. I got my registration paperwork in THE SAME DAY I got it. I filled it out and got it in right away. It comes out in March for the following year.
August 15, 2008 at 5:46 am #634109DunnoParticipantNot cool to take what is your poop and make it someone else’s. It all comes back to personal responsibility, period. Lets all do our part and West Seattle will be a even better place to live!
August 15, 2008 at 5:41 am #634221In reply to: Preschools in WS without insane wait lists?
jmMemberIt depends on which class you’re trying to get into. The 2’s class typically fills up on the first day of registration – though that fluctuates from year to year. This coming year it filled up with siblings and has a VERY long wait list… when I enrolled my son three years ago there weren’t as many people trying to get in, so people who registered well into the registration period got a spot in the 2’s. Next year there might not be as many 2 year olds here in west seattle… or there could be more – who knows? There are more than twice as many 3’s and 4’s spots than 2’s so it’s usually easier to get a spot It’s really hard to say since you never know how many preschool age kids there are in a particular year. I will say it’s a fantastic school! My son loved it and I’m more than pleased with his growth and development through the school. If you’re interested give them a call and the director will give you all the information you will need. If you are interested for a year from now, just make sure that you get your registration papers as soon as they are available and turn them in the first day. Doesn’t guarantee you a spot (as in the case of this fall) but it’s better safe than sorry. :)
QueMemberI am sure that Coleman pool must sell them, there is also a swimwear place on Calif, right above the Blue Moon place (just South of the Radio Shack at Oregon) and they would have them too.
August 15, 2008 at 5:02 am #628844In reply to: Pacific Rim/Big Al’s Brewery
QueMemberWhen this was Pac Rim, and they only had beer and no food, kids were allowed in the courtyard area at the picnic tables and chairs, but not in the building where the taps were, except for using the bathrooms. I think there may be a difference within the Seattle city limits and outside of them. Don’t know for sure.

manolitaParticipantHello,
I just started a Spanish Language preschool program in West Seattle, we are located in the Admiral District. We offer a wonderful program for children ages 12 months to 5 years old. Check our website at http://www.cometaseattle.com
August 15, 2008 at 4:44 am #634108rampinrodneyMemberYour dog, your dog’s poop, you take care of it! This does not include disposal of poop on my premises or in my garbage (or yard waste) containers. Really, pet owners: responsibility and common decency should not be that difficult to understand….
August 15, 2008 at 3:38 am #587782Topic: Preschools in WS without insane wait lists?
in forum West Seattle SchoolskatiebeeParticipantAre there any good preschools in West Seattle that don’t have a crazy wait list? We are on the wait list for Fauntleroy Children’s Center, but it’s more than we can afford. I’ve heard Little Pilgrim is really good…is it hard to get into?

addParticipantI will miss going to the polls, too. I’ve voted absentee the last couple of elections due to work travel schedule, but I always get a little surge of civic pride when I actually go to a polling place. I enjoyed bringing my kids, too – helps them to really “see” the democractic process.
August 15, 2008 at 1:05 am #587781guidosmomMemberWill explain why later… but I am wondering if anyone knows the name of this apartment? Thanks!
August 15, 2008 at 12:41 am #634214In reply to: Lincoln Park Chapel?
herongrrrlParticipantVarious earth-based religious groups have been using Lincoln Park for their observances for years. They usually don’t advertise them, though. There used to be a Druid group that met once a month at one of the beach picnic shelters, but I don’t know if they still do.
The title of this thread reminded me…a number of years ago someone built a little driftwood house at Lincoln Park, just south of Colman Pool, and it became an impromptu interfaith shrine. There were all kinds of beautiful things in it–origami cranes, ornaments, figurines, candles, pictures of lost loved ones, strings of beads, etc. It was a really lovely thing while it lasted. I don’t know if it was eventually torn down by parks staff or someone else. I was wondering, when I read the thread title, if maybe a new one had been put up.

missaudreyhorneParticipantI know, right? For some reason it makes more sense to me. I mean, I know it isn’t practical to always be outside in Seattle, but being in nature makes me feel more connected to things like that.

August 14, 2008 at 9:56 pm #634210In reply to: Compassion for KC Elections Poll Workers
JenVMemberI for one am sad they are going to all mail in voting. Ever since my first vote in ’92, I have always loved going to the polls in person and saying hi to everyone there. I always assumed they were unpaid volunteers…..now that I know how little they are paid, that seems kinda true!
August 14, 2008 at 9:52 pm #634209In reply to: Compassion for KC Elections Poll Workers
charlabobParticipantDiane, it is ridiculous — elections just moved to their permanent building in Renton — training used to be at an old Boeing building (the one where the Green River Killer was questioned) — more convenient and on bus line.
Last time I did it (two years ago) 11 people voted in 16 hours. My biggest problem was boredom, since the lead at the poll insisted we not read…turns out she was an anomaly, but that metal folding chair got awfully hard after hour 4. :-)
I suspect the pay was geared to little old ladies and gentlemen who thought of it, primarily, as public service and a cool way to see all their neighbors and make a few extra $s.
Since KC is scheduled to go all mail, with a few drop-off locations, they won’t need many poll workers starting in February — so they probably won’t change now.
I hope you still think about doing it — at this point, it’s your chance to be part of history.
