KenParticipantI had. And I am familiar with a lot of boring details.
The Poland situation is another wholly manufactured cowboy diplomacy issue.
NATO vs Warsaw Pact moves on the part of the US have been designed entirely as full employment acts for conservatives who have invested their entire career into using anti communism as the Bogey man to control the sheep and as a sales force for missile manufacturers.
The similarities in Georgia are indeed closer to Kosavo than Iraq especially now since the US ignored ethnic cleansing is nearly complete in Iraq.
The two territories have not been governed directly by Georgias government in Tbilisi since the friggin 90’s and South Ossetia has a large number of ethnic Russians and other minorities who have long had Russian passports.
No matter how many neocons try to make this into a “russian aggression” meme, the truth is the Georgian army, trained, equipped and clothed (US army surplus) tried to take total control of a breakaway region Russia had agreed to protect from Georgia and had troops nearby to back up the “peacekeepers” it had installed years ago.
Once again, borders drawn by superpowers across ethnic regions become contentious. This has many many historic parallels and does not fit exactly into any previous mold at the moment.
It could have gone the way of the results of Austro-Hungarian empire breakup, or the breakup of any or the colonies of the European powers of the 18th or 19th centuries.
A US administration who understood diplomacy would not have allowed either of these situations (or hundreds of similar situations) get to the point where troops are used.
We have to assume the State Department and its parts have been just a debased and crony infested as the Justice Department and the Defense Department.

JanSParticipantI totally believe that this was these families choices. And, yes, we cannot allow the “state” to make choices for us, whether here or in another country. I can still look at this and shake my head. Being able to give birth has not a thing to do with being a good, effective parent, whether here, or in India, or in Egypt. I’m 61….would I elect to have a child 9 years from now for , gee, I dunno, a somewhat selfish reason to satisfy some need inside me? I’m glad that I have the choice, but…are we nuts here? ;-)

charlabobParticipantJimmyG, thank you for telling me what disturbs me about this topic. The right to choose includes making decisions that I might, personally, disapprove. Once the state is allowed to make the rules, it’s a slippery slope, and slopes only go one way — down.

JimmyGMemberCruiser,
I’ve tried the canned Vitamin G and didn’t like it at all. Apparently because I don’t have an in with the rocket scientists.
My first ever Guinness was in Ireland in ’03 and I think it spoiled me for life. I WILL return there. And this time I won’t waste any time site seeing, but instead camp permanently at one of the locals in County Donegal.
I mean really, how many castles or ring forts do you need to see?
August 18, 2008 at 1:55 am #634452In reply to: RANT: Does anyone else think this is just wrong?
JimmyGMemberEven if I find it personally distasteful, I’m rabidly pro-choice and with that stand comes the belief that the right of women to CHOOSE how and when they want to have children (or not) is for them to make and not society’s.
August 17, 2008 at 11:29 pm #634347RobindianneParticipantMmmm. Now I consider myself open minded, so I can see both sides. I’m not SO against the bag fee, but, on the one hand, I don’t really want to pay 20cents for each plastic dog poop baggie (my sole use for them after I have them), and I certainly do put every single paper bag in my recycle bin.
On the other hand, I certainly cringe at the thought of the plastic never breaking down, ending up killing turtles in the seat (when they try to eat it), and just the harm to the environment in the production of plastics. I don’t know what the answer is.
Do any of you know where that 20 cents goes? Perhaps that would help push me off the fence. Also, I’m not sure that plastic milk containers are less harmful (although I do certainly recycle each and every one of these too but I’m guessing not everyone does).
Can you tell I’m a gemini? Equally strong opposing views held simultaneously is my specialty. :)
edited to add: btw my family also shopped at Prairie Market in Portland. I’d completely forgotten that. Didn’t we have to use black oil/wax markers and copy the price from the shelf tag onto the items? They had a little twisty knob on top to extend the wax stuff? Wow. Long time ago.

cruiserMemberJimbo,
After exhaustive research since I came Seattle here there is not one decent pint of Guinness to be had here. The best I’ve had in the states is JD’s bar in Manhattan,NY. However I get by with canned Guinness which is brewed in Dublin and a special pouring technique with I have developed in conjunction with NASA:)

JanSParticipantwe here, in this country, don’t understand the thinking in other countries that puts male children above female children, especially the poorer cultures where they can barely keep a roof over their heads. My thoughts on these two mothers: The first one may not live long enough to see her new children grow up. And if both mother and father pass away, who will care for these children? The “not so important” female children who are already grown?
And, the woman in Egypt – my first thought was…what if all seven children had been female?(the gods must hate us?) They have more? and more? The husband can’t afford to feed the children he already had…just amazing.

lizruMemberAn interesting theory on why Russia is invading now is because the U.S. is tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan, Russia can invade with impunity. As for why? Oil? Border security? South Ossettia savior? I don’t know. I did spend 2 months in Tbilisi and have a tough time giving the Russians the benefit of the doubt on this one.

in forum Open DiscussionRainyDay1235Memberhttp://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/08/17/egypt.septuplets.birth.ap/index.html
Babies are not puppies, and 70 is just an irresponsible age to give birth. I realize the need to have a boy is very important in many cultures, but this cannot be the answer.
This trend is increasing at an alarming rate. Of course, the US (Hollywood in particular) is the probably the biggest culprit. Is it too simple of an idea to think that if you are infertile, that is a sign you are should look into adoption?
Note, people who buy “bred” dogs also drive me crazy. I worked an adoptathon Saturday and not a single cute, playful, sweet dog found a home. Sad.
Stepping down off my soap box now….
August 17, 2008 at 10:17 pm #634346RainyDay1235MemberPerhaps people who are against it should just realize that you simply don’t get anything for “free” anymore. Sure, it’s better for the environment (and I am all for it), but are people really surprised to pay 5-10 cents for the bag(s) now? It probably would have happened eventually anyway – green initiative or no.
And I am guessing the people who are SO against it might not have been the best ‘recyclers’ in the first place – or else they would see what pointless fight this is.

in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsglocsonMemberWhat a great place. I love pizza, Corona, and sand between my toes. When and where I can get all three at one time, I’m gonna be in love. Turns out Slices has all three. They have a good beer selection, the staff is fun, and the pizza is actually good! Also you don’t get “George Bushed”(screwed) on the prices either. The view and location ain’t bad either.
August 17, 2008 at 7:45 pm #634246In reply to: House Cleaning Services?
JanSParticipantmellaw..there is that. I don’t expect my cleaning person to clean up my clothes on the floor, wash the sink full of dishes, etc., do my laundry, change my sheets. I take care of that before she/they get here. I use the service for the things like..dusting, vacuuming, scrubbing floors, bathrooms, stove etc. – those things that I would rather devote my time to doing other things. It’s been wonderful. (Actually, I cleaned houses for 12 years or so in a previous life, and I always told myself that I’d have it done for me at some point – love it)
August 17, 2008 at 7:39 pm #634344JanSParticipantIn a perfect world (yeah, right), we’d all be bundling up our plastic bags in one big bag and recycling them. But, honestly, how many of us can say we do hat 100% of the time? How many of those plastic bags get tossed in our trash because, this one time (!) it’s just easier, etc. etc. So, yes, they’re recyclable, but obviously, that ain’t working for us.
I have no problem taking my own bag. I’ll miss the paper bags tat I use for my recycling stuff in my kitchen..I’ll have to deal with that (stock up?lol).
The big thing I have to work on is my memory – lol. Have to remember to take my reusable bags each and every time I walk to the grocery store :)
Dos anyone remember Prairie Market..no bags, no bagging, there were cardboard boxes, and you loaded them yourself? Those were the days…

August 17, 2008 at 6:46 pm #634342WSBKeymasterIt wasn’t a plastic-bag ban in California when we were there – but environmental concern really started to accelerate in the late ’80s, and that’s always been one of my personal signature issues, so we bought cloth shopping bags – almost every chain offered them (I think from the same provider; the ones I had from Lucky and Safeway were very similar, unbleached cotton canvas with the logo inscribed in red). Also cloth produce bags from a now-defunct mail-order (remember, this was before The Interwebs went big) company called Earth Care Paper, which also offered AWESOME post-consumer (almost 100 percent!) legal pads that we also bought from them in bulk. Somebody took over Earth Care in the early ’90s and more or less shut them down … sad.
San Diego had no curbside recycling then and here’s one instance of something we did that probably was counterproductive: The tap water was HORRIBLE, Brita-type filters didn’t exist, so all our drinking water came from the 1-gallon plastic jugs. The closest recycling place for those was a dropoff … 15 miles north. So we saved them in a closet in our apartment till it couldn’t hold any more, then threw them in the car and drove to the dropoff spot. We’ve always had smallish cars but I still wonder if the gas-burning drive negated the recycling benefit :) – TR
August 17, 2008 at 6:41 pm #634341datamuseParticipantCharlabob, I think the issue is that you CAN reuse the plastic bags–either to carry groceries, or for trash can liners, etc. Plus, the plastic bags themselves can be recycled.
When I was growing up in Maryland, there was this one sort of budget supermarket where you got charged a fee if you used the store’s bags instead of bringing your own. I think it was a cost-cutting measure, not for environmental reasons. About every month my mom would buy the bags (they were all paper then, of course) and then reuse them until they fell apart.
August 17, 2008 at 6:30 pm #634340charlabobParticipantHow are the people who claim to use recycleble bags being punished? The “tax” is on people who don’t. Who benefits from our continued use of plastic bags? Hmmmm…the chemical industry? Who’s paying the signature gathers? Hmmmmm. Falling for it again, aren’t we?

August 17, 2008 at 8:00 am #634339DianeParticipantGenHillOne, I agree; I’m the queen of recycling and majorly resent a punitive tax; if any plastic bag law has to be passed, I’d much prefer an outright ban
there’s excellent resource info re plastic bags bans in California, New York, Portland, and other countries on http://www.seattlebagtax.org/

Besides seeing everything 3 hours earlier, this is just another reason to love the Canadian channel. I only switch back to NBC if I want to see a replay. If everyone in the room here has had too many frosty beverages, my apologies to Mr. Gaines, but we all just had a simultaneous WTH(?!) moment.
