West Seattle food notes: Wildwood Market; Harry’s; Circa; Proletariat; Kizuki

Five quick West Seattle (and vicinity) food notes:

WILDWOOD MARKET: Finally an answer to the question of “what’s going in at the old Guadalajara Restaurant?” at 9214 45th SW in Fauntleroy. Wildwood Market‘s website says it will open this fall, a market and sandwich shop described as “… your locally owned community-focused eatery … A modern take on Seattle’s old neighborhood corner stores, you will find wholesome foods, beer & wine, and staples for your fridge & pantry, in a family-friendly atmosphere.”

(added Wednesday night) We reached Lonjina Verdugo, part of the Wildwood Market team, who you might remember as proprietor of the Center Studio in White Center. She says it’s a family operation, and they’re modeling it on a market in Washington, D.C., that a relative operates. “With permits and remodeling, we are hoping to open this Fall if not sooner. Very excited!”

(back to original report) HARRY’S CHICKEN JOINT ON VACATION: Don’t get alarmed if you find Harry’s Chicken Joint (6032 California SW) closed; proprietor Bruce sent a note this morning to say, “We are taking a much-needed rest and vacation and will be closed until Friday, June 3rd.”

CRAWFISH AT CIRCA TODAY: Circa proprietor Gretchen e-mailed to say they’re doing another crawfish boil at the Admiral restaurant (2605 California SW) today, 11:30 am-4 pm. Gumbo too. (And their regular menu is available as well.)

PROLETARIAT PIZZA LAUNCHES BRUNCH: As of last weekend, “the pizza that made White Center famous” – created by the Albaeck family of West Seattle – is now serving brunch on weekends, 9 am-noon. Get a taste by checking out the first brunch menu on our partner site White Center Now.

KIZUKI RAMEN UPDATE: This is the number one reader question in the restaurant realm right now – “when is Kizuki Ramen opening in The Junction?” Especially since the sign went up recently (thanks for the pic!):

Latest answer we’ve found to the “WHEN?” question: “In a few weeks.”

(And yes, we’re following up on a hefty helping of other eats/drinks on the way; more news as we confirm it!)

Any news on “Dumplings of Fury” where “Quadrato’s” was located?

    • WSB May 10, 2016 (11:30 am)

If anyone reading this has insider info, please dish. My last line was intended to be read as, we are checking on EVERYTHING continuously and will publish whatever we know whenever we know it. D-o-F is high on our watch list.

Last I heard (Sunday 5/8/16) everything is ready to go, they are just waiting on a final inspection.

  • At least it's an ethos May 10, 2016 (12:19 pm)

    When will Pecos open?

    • WSB May 10, 2016 (12:22 pm)

Last update was, within the next month or so.

  • newnative May 10, 2016 (12:25 pm)

I can’t wait much longer for Kizuki to open.

  • ACG May 10, 2016 (12:43 pm)

Best of luck to the Market, although I was really hoping for a good restaurant to go into the space. I’m a little bummed about that, I have to admit. Didn’t the Endolyne space used to be a market before it closed and became a restaurant?

    • Jennifer May 10, 2016 (1:31 pm)

It was previously an IGA and before that a mom and pop grocery called Hoff’s

    • Bonnie May 10, 2016 (3:33 pm)

Endolyne was some sort of sandwich place before Endolyne came in.  Don’t remember what it was called.  There about a year.  Before that was the mom and pop type grocery store I believe.

In between it was the Saffron Cow.  Loved the name and the food and the art and furniture for sale. Such a fun blend of it all.

        • WSB May 10, 2016 (4:09 pm)

Thank you, Vanessa. We’d been there more than a few times but I couldn’t remember its name to save my life, and Google searches on the address weren’t bringing up anything.

        • miws May 10, 2016 (6:33 pm)

I’d forgotten about the Saffron Cow! Don’t recall if I ever went there, but liked the name as well. Plus, I had totally forgotten there was anything there at all between the grocery and Endolybe Joe’s.

I liked the Saffron Cow as well.  It was a little pricey at dinner, for a neighborhood place, but good.   I am consistently disappointed with Endolyne Joes.  Looking forward to a cool new place in the hood!

    • Marge E, May 12, 2016 (3:34 pm)

it was . something cow?  anyway the breakfast was way better than Endoylne Joe’s . almost all of the furniture in the bar, and the left side of the restaurant was from the that place.

    Any update on The Hydrant?

  • Jo May 10, 2016 (12:46 pm)

Kizuki has been training staff at their other locations for about three weeks now, so it feels like it’s going to be very soon.

  • Admiral May 10, 2016 (12:48 pm)

Please open a Wildwood market in the Admiral District too!

  • Wes C. Addle May 10, 2016 (1:01 pm)

As an Admiral resident.  The last thing that the Admiral District needs is the Wildwood with Met Market, Admiral Bird and PCC right there.  Much rather see them put something cool in the Zatz / Cask storefront.  Maybe something breakfasty.

    • Kate May 10, 2016 (2:04 pm)

      Agreed.

  • Jack May 10, 2016 (1:05 pm)

Whatever happened to that chinese restaurant that was supposed to open near morgan junction?

IIRC it was going into a  house on california  that a couple has owned for a while, the couple runs a chinese restaurant on Cap Hill somewhere. Does that ring a bell??

  • Karin H May 10, 2016 (1:21 pm)

I’ve been meaning to ask about The Hydrant as well – hope they are still planning to open!

  • Kate May 10, 2016 (2:02 pm)

We asked some staff in Next to Nature a few weeks ago about the Hydrant (same owners, I believe), and were told that the owner is dealing with some private family matters, unfortunately. They couldn’t say when it would be opening, but my impression was that it may still be awhile.

  • Joe Szilagyi May 10, 2016 (2:08 pm)

Do we have ANY legit bagel option now?

    • HelperMonkey May 10, 2016 (2:25 pm)

Joe, I know it’s going to sound weird but hear me out: Roxbury Safeway has fabulous bagels.

      • Joe Szilagyi May 10, 2016 (3:51 pm)

They’re OK, but I need my bagel and nova lox. Yeah, I can make my own… but Zatz.

  • Brenda May 10, 2016 (2:29 pm)

The Mawaada Gyros place in Admiral is also closed now.  I noticed a change of business ownership in the window last night and construction underway.

  • Jim May 10, 2016 (2:53 pm)

What’s the latest on the Whole Foods?

  • Kathi May 10, 2016 (5:09 pm)

The Saffron Cow preceded Endolyne Joes

  • Diane Venti May 10, 2016 (5:59 pm)

SO EXCITED for the Wildwood Market.  That is exactly what our neighborhood needed.

  • CMP May 10, 2016 (7:25 pm)

We walked by the Hydrant this weekend and one of the sheets of paper covering the window had fallen down…it looked like a lot of progress had been made with the space so it looks like they could open sooner than later.  More curious about Dumplings of Fury, that’s been pending for a long time now and my husband is eager to check it out.  Thank you for the other updates WSB!

The West Seattle Kids Salon has closed, the the owner have moved into Salon West a block away. She’s taken the kids toys with her. Hurray!

  • aa May 10, 2016 (8:55 pm)

The bagels on first across from Krispy Kreme are good.  Staff are slow as can be but the bagels and toppings are good.  Really not that far folks…

  • Gina May 10, 2016 (9:12 pm)

Dumplings of Fury is stuck in permits of city and state.

  • RamenLover May 11, 2016 (7:30 pm)

Anxiously awaiting Kizuki Ramen to open.  Have eaten in their Bellevue branch and love the garlic ramen!

  • Ms_F May 18, 2016 (8:02 pm)

I wonder if Wildwood is going to use the deck space once they open (or once it’s warm enough again)?  I’ll really miss that spot this summer!

Sorry, comment time is over.
