Hi there –

I am *not* an author. However, I am reader/reviewer periodically on Authonomy.com when I have time. Rather a cool application for my English degree, I’ve found :). Those who can do, those who can’t critique. :D

Anyway, authonomy promotes createspace.com. I have come across authors who have used lulu, but I really am not able to say whether createspace is better. Just what I am peripherally familiar with.

Inherited this plant from a former co-worker at Boeing about 13 years ago. It’s been living the life of benign neglect (don’t water until it’s completely droopy) since then. Too tall to fit in the car for the move to San Fran.

As you can see it’s gotten a bit ‘leggy’ on its search for water and light… if you want to get creative you might weave it into an interesting shape, or propagate it and give those away to keep the dream alive.

Ghar – the crosswalk removals have happened at various spots in WS over the years. Back when we started covering news in earnest, four years ago, there was quite the campaign over the one by Java Bean/Luna Park Café:

I wish I had more specifics handy, but in a nutshell: There are guidelines/rules somewhere for crosswalks. And if a spot doesn’t meet those requirements – and if improvements such as overhead lights or even a signal are not in the cards for whatever reason – the city is more liable if the crosswalk stays in place, than if it is taken away. (Having run across Avalon a couple times recently without benefit of the marked crosswalk, the logic there still is boggling, but there it is.) – TR

@Admiral935: Unless your encrypting your messages before sending from your local machine, your connection to the internet (wi-fi or wired) is really irrelevant to the security of your email. SMTP does not use encryption and there are any number of servers between your message and it’s intended recipient, where your communication can be compromised (say hi to the NSA).

Using an open, public wi-fi may put you at greater risk of having a session sniffed and a login token hijacked, but there are a number of other ways for that to happen that don’t require the wi-fi at all.

I hope you’re using SSL to connect to your email server, and Https for webmail. I wouldn’t do any online banking at the cafe regardless, but does anyone really want to read your email? Script kiddies maybe, just because they can. But, if you really are sending messages that should not be read by strangers you should be using a VPN and/or encryption no matter where you connect (which still probably won’t stop the NSA from reading your email, but that’s another issue).

We do have government folks pop in and comment. On our news stories. As I imagine they do on other news sites. Believe me, the server logs show plenty of readership in city/county gov’t. Who specifically the readers are – impossible to tell, of course (the entire city of Seattle gov’t, for example, tends to show up with just ONE IP).

I’ve heard anecdotally of the occasional government person checking on forums, but that’s a lot to wade through, whereas if you for example are interested in transportation comments (such as the WSDOT PR person who jumped into the Highway 99 discussion earlier this week

Much as I’ve given up on trying to patrol language, we do not operate this as a “blog” (we would change the name if not for the fact that would cause far more problems than it would solve), and it’s one of just a handful citywide in this format that are run as professional, commercial news sites. I imagine the others are perused by government reps from time to time too. I get e-mail sometimes directly from government reps saying “I saw the person who commented (whatever) – here’s the info about that.” I encourage them to comment directly rather than funnel through us, but policies in government agencies are not uniform regarding allowing employees to do that.

HOWEVER, none of this absolves anyone from trying to go through the prescribed channels first. As “Wonder” points out, it’s important to exhaust those, at least for starters, because that’s the first question you’ll be asked – “well, have you reported it?” The reply can’t be “No, I haven’t, cause nothing will ever be done about it.” If you’ve reported it AND nothing’s been done about it, then by all means, go ahead and say that, but there’s usually a lot more escalation you can try first. Hotlines, then specific staff members, then elected officials …

And if you have trouble finding out who/where, and you don’t find answers from fellow Forums members here, from whom I’ve sure learned a lot over the years – you’re also welcome to e-mail us. We spend a fair amount of time doing backchannel research that never winds up as a story, because somebody tried everything and couldn’t figure out where to go/what to do.

Our son is a Sealth student and I picked him up yesterday when school let out. He said he heard something in the distance that sounded like gunshots. We have help monitoring the scanners but nothing out of the ordinary was noted (nor did we hear sirens). I know nobody was shot anywhere; I will check with the precinct to ask if they found any evidence of shots. They check out “I heard gunshots” reports so often that we don’t even report on all of them unless multiple people ask us about it, and yes, most of them turn out to be fireworks.

I would also recommend this class, having taken the same session as ensignmarvin (who it was nice to meet!). This is the same class we were discussing in the anti-inflammation class thread a while back: https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/classes-about-anti-inflammatory-diet

The amount of information in this class is amazing, and she went into great detail about inflammatory response in the body, the science behind it, and how to control it. A lot of info also on GMO foods and nutrition in general.

During the 6 week class I lost 20 lbs. and had my blood sugar go from the 500s to the 90s – my doctor was blown away by the results. I also had a pain in my leg that drove me crazy for about 5 years, and within 2 weeks of changing the foods I ate, the pain went away. Getting rid of that pain was worth the $150 class fee (5 90-min. classes over 6 weeks).

As mentioned, the class is starting up against on 6/6 at the Kenney here in West Seattle, and she does classes on Vashion, other areas of Seattle and in Burien. Highly recommended!

There were hundreds of people out lining Duwamish Head/Don Armeni the night it came in. Just had to see such an unusual sight firsthand. And all day, we and other news orgs were tracking it on Twitter, past webcams along the Strait of Juan de Fuca/North Sound, not to mention its path on marinetraffic.com. Lucky nothing much else was going on …

Oh, and to the towing question. It apparently came in under its own power, though tugs and security accompanied it.

Good luck on this initiative. Please see the above article on the WSB, today. Remember, you have “drug experts” who want to limit your use of pain killing drugs. They could care less about your quality of life. If a drug is abused, it should be severely controlled. To heck with those individuals that need it. BTW, I have not ingested pot for AT LEAST eighteen years! But, I want the right to use it, if needed!!!!

Mac Defender (AKA MAC protector) is a rogue anti malware program. It is not technically a virus since it is installed by social engineering. It can be described as a trojan but it does not self replicate so far…

It (and more variations to come) relies entirely on convincing the user that there is already a problem and they need to pay to have it fixed.

Search engine optimization poisoning seems to have been used to spread it initially via search results.

Many more Mac users are going to be impacted by this than will admit it since the software is well designed to lure in users who are may be otherwise sophisticated but expect their mac to either work correctly or expect to pay someone to fix it auto magically when it does something odd.

Follow the instructions at the link below to remove it. The link also shows how to close the Safari setting that allows it to self install after the user clicks an obfuscated link to download it. Mac users that use Safari as their browser should uncheck the checkbox labeled “Open “safe” files after downloading”.

All mac users should read the page so they can avoid the future variations sure to follow this one.
