The problem is that a lot of people are moving here, so the city’s population is growing extremely fast. These people need to live somewhere. Because there wasn’t and still isn’t enough housing for them, rents and housing costs are rising and rising and pricing more and more people out of the city. So more housing has to be built to accomodate the new arrivals.

What could we do about this? Ask employers such as Amazon to quit expanding, or to move outside the city limits? Pass laws against people moving here?

Yes, growth could probably be managed better, and yes, some buildings are ugly as sin. But we still need to build more housing somewhere, unless we can stop job growth and stop people from moving here.

Here’s a recipe for them if you feel like cooking…

    Almost-Famous Fried Pickles

    Total Time:25 minPrep:15 minCook:10 min

    Yield:4 servingsLevel:Easy

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–

    Ingredients
    For the sauce:

    1/4 cup mayonnaise

    1 tablespoon drained horseradish

    2 teaspoons ketchup

    1/4 teaspoon Cajun seasoning

    For the pickles:

Peanut or vegetable oil, for frying

    1/2 cup all-purpose flour

    1 3/4 teaspoons Cajun seasoning

    1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning

    1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

    Kosher salt

2 cups sliced dill pickles, drained

Add Checked Items To Grocery List

    Directions

Make the sauce: Mix the mayonnaise, horseradish, ketchup and Cajun seasoning in a bowl; set aside.

Fry the pickles: Heat 1 inch peanut oil in a pot over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 375 degrees F. Meanwhile, whisk the flour, Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 cup water in a large bowl until smooth. Spread the pickles on paper towels and pat dry.

Add half of the pickles to the batter and toss to coat. Remove from the batter using a slotted spoon, letting the excess drip off, and add to the oil one at a time. Fry until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes; remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Return the oil to 375 degrees F and repeat with the remaining pickles and batter. Serve immediately with the prepared sauce.

Technically not considered West Seattle proper but The Crawfish House in White Center can hook you up with a huge basket of fried pickles for a mere $2.50! It’s a bit of a funky place but it’s almost always packed and there is a reason for that. I have not tried fried pickles from many places so I have no idea how these compare to other fried pickles but we order them every time we go and they are quite tasty. I also recall that Burger Madness (near the 4th Ave. Costco) has fried pickles as well but I remember leaving the restaurant with a mental note that I wouldn’t order them there again (I think they were too expensive for a pretty small amount).

It’s really encouraging to see an informed discussion about taxes and revenue distribution arise in contrast to the tired and predictable anti-tax memes.

mark47n, Regarding your question about the irregular use of capital letters, the phrase “words alone cannot express. . . ” comes to mind. I’ve always taken it as an attempt by the writer to impart emphasis without understanding it actually displays an unfamiliarity with or deliberate disregard for conventional writing standards of the sort typically presented in high school English classes. Conventional writing guidelines encourage use of sentence structure to convey emphasis in preference to punctuation tools such as italics or boldface which are regarded as bells and whistles substituting for good writing. The sad irony is this idiosyncratic writing style has the counterproductive effect of reducing the author’s credibility and inviting readers to conjure up all sorts of possibilities for what inspires it.

    Shadowland has them.
You may have to wade through beards and skinny jeans to get to them though.
Seriously though, they are delicious. But they do have a problem with prompt service. Don’t go there rushed.

What I want to know is, has anybody done a proper survey of the homeless. Not how many, but who they are.
We hear that Seattles raising rents are why there are so many homeless. But is this true? How many people camping in Seattle are there because their rents were raised so high they ended on the streets? Or rather because they are drug addicts and spend their money on drugs instead of rent? Or, like a friend of mine, are mentally ill and when they go manic, they trash the place they live in and get evicted? Or are not even from Seattle but came here because they heard how easy it is to be homeless here? We need to fully understand the problem before we can put forth solutions. Anyway, about your question, I am not comfortable with people camping wherever they please. I don’t want to trip over a campsite while hiking in Lincoln park.

    Hi!
We’re moving and have a nice antique bedroom set that we can’t take with us. I’d like to donate it to charity, but need some advice on the best way to do it. It’s worth about $800 I think, so not too fancy, but too nice for a thrift store? We usually donate to northwest center, but would the irs take our word for the value since nwc doesn’t really write receipts? It’s not valuable enough to get appraised it seems, but do you think the value is correct? Please share some advice on the best way to donate this set. I have an ad on craigslist so you can see the photos. Thanks!

Ok, have to finally admit it, Summers over. Now that fresh/local produce season is coming to end, which Farm Box company did you enjoy the most over the summer? Looking to try some out next year but want to get a good read on the better ones while it’s still “fresh” in everyone’s mind. Sorry, couldn’t help myself there.

I hesitate to respond here because I will be leaving town this week until Oct 24. But if you have interest, or even need a back-up person this is me:
I’m a retired first grade teacher with Seattle Schools after almost 40 years. I love children. I have two grandchildren in West Seattle, ages 3 and 8 and I have been a big part of their life since birth. I spend lots of time thinking of cool things to do with “my kids”. It’s the teacher in me. Your situation sounds great for me. Oh, and I love pets. My sweet dog died before I moved to West Seattle and I currently have 3 cats. I live near the North End of Beach Drive. I still remember how difficult it was to get good childcare so I wish you the best. Susan 206-268-0951 (my home, not text)

For some time now, I’ve participated in these discussions even though they’re often unpleasant. Occasionally I learn something, and that helps.

I think it may be time to stop. I can’t prevent the continuous stream of attacks by anything other than pointing out how ridiculous they are.

When the topic devolves to hating something that I did not say, on the assumption that I was thinking it, there’s nowhere to go.

When argument is based on arrogance – the belief that one holds the truth of the matter and therefore any disagreement is evil – there’s no conversation to be had.

When it’s based on hypocrisy – railing at someone for imagined offence while committing far worse oneself – well, that doesn’t help either.

In a world where sometimes people are attacked physically or legally for what they’ve said, you might be careful about your rants. JoB and JanS, you’re close to criminal slander, or would be if there are damages.

The really surprising bit is that the pearl of wisdom came from redblack: that this is politics on the Internet and one should expect all this. Maybe I was overly optimistic about what’s otherwise a pretty nice neighborhood blog/forum.

    Anyway, that’s about it.

Dear Ms. Betty…I could send you the letters if you wish. I’m a renter, and every time my rent goes up, reason #1 is usually property tax increase. If you were the landlord, I’m sure you wouldn’t just expect it to come out of your savings…oh, wait…that comes from rent you would charge, too…if you were a landlord .

you have ridden this dead horse into the ground.
what do you want me to say? that in a moment of frustration and snark i posted that line as a reflection of your remarks.. because that is what it boils down to .. the great “how dare they” “uppity ___________”.
Yup.. in a moment of snark i mocked what you said. And in this moment of clarity i pretty much stand by it.

Do i need to tell you how tiring that argument is? Or that it is any more palatable clothed in what you think is politically correct language?

They dare because they are directly affected by what is happening.. and if you can’t get that .. that’s really your problem.. not mine.

    I have my priorities straight.
I am far more offended by the behavior that triggered the protests than by the protests..
and quite frankly.. i can’t see why you’re not.

If that makes me some kind of big meanie.. so be it. i am a big meanie.

i don’t know how i can be more clear.

JoB – I’m going to call out your use of “uppity n____” as an offensive slur that belongs back in the Jim Crow days. What were you thinking?

Or to JanS, who also used ‘uppity’ in an early post.

You people are nitpicking my writing style, while offering language that you yourself would have called hate speech.

JoB, you suggested that I was misinterpreting this, when in fact I had offered no interpretation at all, other than to note you were the one who’d said it. Care to explain?

Mark, you mean “renters pay property taxes”. No apostrophe, which I only mention because you were just calling out Betty for (egregious and ridiculous) syntax issues.

So a really free-market analysis makes the link between taxes and rent pretty weak. A landlord looks at the demand and figures out what rent price optimizes his revenue. The connection is that is optimal revenue doesn’t cover expenses (which include property tax), then he sells the property and leaves the game.

Yeah, if I were doing it, I’d total my expenses up, tack on 20%, and charge that as rent. So much for theory.

Betty and other ranting, foaming, slavering righties, What is it with you and your ilk and the improper use of capital letters and punctuation?

As to the renter question as it pertains to property tax; renter’s pay property taxes. It is part of the equation that is used to calculate what rent should be. Otherwise landlords would operate at a deficit all of the time.

Redblack, thank you for mentioning about how statewide tax distribution works! For the record, some years ago (5 or so, I’ve not looked it up recently) for every dollar that was collected in Ferry Co, the county with the least tax revenue, they received something on the the order of $2.80. King Co, on the other hand received less than $1 for every dollar collected. And, strangely, it’s the rural, conservative counties the complain about how the west side pulls the state in terms of politics, all the while sucking at that liberal tax teat. I wish I could get that out of my head now.
