In reply to: RAVE for Joe the Plumber
EarthMamaParticipantJoe rocks! We had the same running toilet issue here at our home, but I was determined to fix it myself before raising the white flag and calling for help; it was clearly the the ring. The problem was, our terlet “was” that 25 years old piece of work, not a user friendly model, and I’d disassembled far more than needed to fix a simple problem. Basically, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing!
Enter Joe on a late Sunday afternoon. He arrived at a moments notice, kindly amused at my DIY attempt. Since everything was already in pieces, it was a simple job of putting it all back together again and I came out of the whole deal with my humility intact having received an E for effort, and, an invoice well under what would be expected for a Sunday call-out.
Joe clearly cares about his clients. He educates them, thus enabling them to make informed decisions for the things in their home they “own”, rather than having to make on the spot, fear-based decisions.
A quick note to fellow consumers: in any situation requiring potentially costly repairs, conifer doing the following:
● ask family and friends who they like/used trusted in the past, AHEAD OF TIME. Create a list, i.e electrician, plumber, mechanic, etc.
• lacking a referral, and if it’s a non-emergency situation, call around and get quotes and second opinions. Ask everything- when does the “the clock start”? Do they charge per mile from their location to your home in addition to their service,? How do they charge for a quote- (you may not use their service, yet end up having to pay for having pay for them to come out to tell you their price for repairs.)
Information is power. There is nothing worse than feeling ripped off, as you are the one who has to live in your home and you want to feel good about whatever it is that you have to use or look at every day- not regret it.
Sorry for the long post, I speak from experience and have seen it happen to many times as well.

robirdaParticipantPer all the raves on wsb I just tried to call Mr.Sparky/Eagle Electric and mis-dialed. I reached seattle electricians / electricians today. The receptionist was not very nice. I then called Mr.Sparky/Eagle Electric and got the best customer service any employer could hope to have….. I highly recommend them.

wsgolferMemberSecond the recommendation for Brad Leff. He has completely rewired our house, getting rid of all the old knob & tube. He was a pleasure to work with, is extremely knowledgeable and his rates are reasonable. Highly recommend him!

charliesierraParticipant+1 for Brad Leff of Expert Electric; just had a great experience with him. brad@power-us.com, 206.890.0014. He’s a long-time West Seattle resident and he took extra pains on our tiny job to (a) fix the problem so it wouldn’t happen again and (b) make the work as inconspicuous as possible to keep the look and character of our old house. Very reasonable rates, and very quick response time from when I called him.

BonnieParticipantThanks PDieter. I figured he was busy. Our renter in the condo is not very easy to work around her schedule either so it was probably tough to plan too.

miwsParticipantHi susan!
Have you taken a look at the transformer, which in that era of doorbell should have the two plungers similar to what is in this pic:

The “trick” back in the day, was to put some lighter fluid on the plungers, then hit the button a few times a see if that freed them up. They tend to get gummed up after awhile.
By lighter fluid, I mean this stuff that’s used to refill lighters:

not the stuff you squirt on the BBQ charcoal.
Also, even though the doorbell transformer is low-voltage, I must, in good conscience, suggest you turn the power off.
Also please note that I am not an electrician, or a doorbell professional. Just a bit of a ding dong. ;-)

brstParticipantJwws,
The OP was NOT asking about hiring a contractor, she asked if anyone pouring a concrete pad on private property needs to be certified, and NO they do not. The only tradesmen that are required to be licensed in the state of Washington are Electricians and Plumbers.
The OP’s father is a general and nothing would prevent him from recommending a couple of his flatwork guys to do the pour and finish. The OP would provide the materials and the flatwork guys would provide the labor. No different than hiring the neighborhood kid to mow your lawn or an experienced painter to paint your house. Of course, the OP would have no recourse if the pour went bad. As a Construction Manager for a large firm for 35+ years, I do have some experience in the subject.

MarmiteParticipantThank you all for your replies. I like the idea of trying to bend it out of the way, or contacting an electrician. My husband also thought of trying to integrate it around the pavers somehow, though it would be nicer and easier if it was out of the way.
April 29, 2013 at 3:39 pm #788893In reply to: Advice needed on disused pipe in back yard..
KenParticipantAn electrician can tell you if the pipe and wire arrangement is grounding for the current house wiring or lightning arrest or for something defunct. Do NOT replace or disconnect until you know since the ground connection is critical for the safe operation of all electrical equipment. I have a 400 ft old unused waterline that is STILL used as a ground line for my 200 Amp service. It also sticks up through my paver patio a few inches from the edge.

Genesee HillParticipantI would check under your house at the source. Or, call an electrician. Wires are scary.
