susanps22MemberWe bought a house here in West Seattle that was built in 1948 and has one of those doorbells chimes with 2 tubes. Any suggestions who can repair chimes (we get the ‘ding’, but not the ‘dong’) and / or replace the tubes?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

miwsParticipantHi susan!
Have you taken a look at the transformer, which in that era of doorbell should have the two plungers similar to what is in this pic:

The “trick” back in the day, was to put some lighter fluid on the plungers, then hit the button a few times a see if that freed them up. They tend to get gummed up after awhile.
By lighter fluid, I mean this stuff that’s used to refill lighters:

not the stuff you squirt on the BBQ charcoal.
Also, even though the doorbell transformer is low-voltage, I must, in good conscience, suggest you turn the power off.
Also please note that I am not an electrician, or a doorbell professional. Just a bit of a ding dong. ;-)

susanps22MemberThank you so much, Mike! I will try that…
Do you have any idea who to check for replacement of the brass tubes – I would love them in silver (a bit of a dong-dong myself…haha)
Again thank you so much!
Susan.

miwsParticipantThat I wouldn’t know off the top of my head, but you might try Second Use:
or Earthwise:
or some similar type business that sells stuff salvaged from old homes.
Never been to either of these places, but I’ve heard several recommendations for them.
