I have a landline phone only, which has not worked for 5 days now. DSL works. Century Link (horrible as always) has eliminated my Line backer coverage without my knowledge or consent, and now wants to charge me $95 just for coming out to check the inside line – more to correct the problem. Does anyone know someone who can possibly repair an inside line that won’t charge hundreds of dollars? Doesn’t have to be an electrician. I’m at my wit’s end with these thugs.

Just want to show my great appreciation for the work of Mr Monson. I know he is a sponsor, so it is nice to know that the work and professionalism was well founded.
I found Jim knowledgable, engaging and thorough, and my problem was soon solved. I would have him back in a heartbeat.

Looking for a reliable licensed electrician to replace an apparently faulty circuit breaker. (May be another problem that trips the breaker).

    Hi there,

As a local contractor I can vouch for the work done with West Seattle Fence. They are well priced, reasonable and a great team. Cant recommend them enough.

Fence: We’ve used both Alpine Fence and West Seattle Fence. I would recommend West Seattle Fence. They did an awesome job at a fair price. He also used clear cedar instead of tight not at a price that was comparable to other quotes.

Electrical: We have used Mr. Sarky o.k service and descent price. We also just used Exact Electric. Exact did a great job, very professional. The only problem I had was that the price was significantly higher that the quote. I sent them an email and they called within 15 minutes and adjusted the price significantly. Not down to the original quote but a descent amount. Make sure you get a written quote.

Landscape: A landscape project with hardscape is a challenging area. Not alot of landscape companies also do hardscape. We did a large stamped concrete patio built in grill and refrigerator and plantings. For that project we went with Sublime Garden Design. They do design and project management. They pull all of the aspects of such a project together. Also, the design they came up with was nothing I would have ever thought of. The plantings they used were also unique and not cookie cutter..if that makes sense. I was very happy with their design and service. Also we are currently working with David at Garden Shed Design who is building us an arbor. I’ll let you know how that goes. Hope that helps.

We are looking to make a dent in our home improvement list. If you have experience with someone who was reliable and reasonably priced (fair price for quality work) I would love to hear about them. Thank you! Here are the types of jobs we are looking to do:

    – Fence (wooden and maybe wire grid)

    – Exterior paint

    – General handy person work

    – Light remodel (including plans if necessary)

    – Electrical

    – Landscaping project (including hardscape)

Hello! There are a number of older threads asking for recommendations for an electrician and I am just trying to get some updated recommendations for someone to rewire our knob and tube to bring it up to standard. Does anyone have some recs?

I just joined the WSB forums so I could give a shout out to Guy from Endeavour Electric. Guy is an excellent electrician, and lives right in West Seattle. He has been wonderful at looking for the least intrusive solutions in our old 1918 home, but it looks like he’s very comfortable with newer construction, according to his website, http://endeavourelectricllc.com

Ditto about Brad from Expert Electric. Sharp as a tack and easy to work with. He installed a dusk-to-dawn porch light switch for us and – even better – programmed the thing. The instructions were not only confusing but wrong, but Brad knew the gotchas.

    Jd,

There has been a fair amount of discussion on WSB about this issue from people involved in it, not simply citizens with opinions. One I found helpful was from the trucker who discussed the issue of the shortage of chassis.

You’ll note this thread began with a post from Alki Beach that proved to be grossly uninformed and mostly an anti-union rant. Whether or not that individual is connected to BeachDriveGirl or they simply share a related geographic reference is not clear. However, she at least has bothered to retrieve information on the topic, albeit from obvious anti-union sources including Breitbart.com (perhaps James O’Keefe might sieze this opportunity to create a deceptive video Breitbart could reference as in other instances). Dobro’s comment questioning the connection between a local action in Portland last summer over a dispute on the roll of electricians and the current general contract dispute affecting the entire West Coast is worth considering.

It is a bit frustrating to me that management, labor and the negotiator seem to have some sort of agreement to keep mum on the specific issues under discussion.

The fact of the matter is that for all intent and purpose, the union movement in this country is effectively dead. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of union membership for the private sector was 6.7%, and for the public sector 35.3% in 2014. About 40% of public employees are constrained by laws making it illegal for them to organize a union and campaigns to strip collective bargaining for public employees are relentless and systematic in states governed by Republican majorities.

I think we know what has happened to real income growth for wage earners in the last 30 years. Nada. So there are some who hang on to hopes for a resurgence of organized labor to help reverse that trend. Others appears to like things just as they are and encourage those whose pay scale has declined to be happy they have a job at all. I don’t believe there is any question that the latter are winning the argument at this point in time in spite of the illogical, sometimes vindictive rationale they put forward against organized labor.

Brad from Expert Electric is the best. He came out, promptly diagnosed my issue, provided advice on several other potential issues, and fixed the main problem for a most excellent price. I cant recommend him enough. Thorough and professional! His number has a permanent place in my phone.

Speaking as an electrician who has worked on a lot of mobile equipment I would caution you against cheap electrical connectors as they are a frequent source of damage to electrical systems. Solder and shrink tube what connections you can and use high quality connectors when crimping is the only option.

I would like to add to the RAVE for EXPERT ELECTRIC, I phoned them at 6:45pm after several hours of frustration dealing with replacing my dimmer switch with a new dimmer switch which was compatible with the LED 18w consumption/ 100 watt lumen light bulbs I purchased. FYI old dimmer switches are no longer compatible with the new LED high efficiency dimmable bulbs!

The electrician took the time to explain what brand dimmers were compatible and provided good experience know how which saved me time and money. I was willing to pay for his expertise however he generously offered helpful hints on the phone! I’m thinking he saved me a house call. Thanks very much for paying it forward! 5 Stars!

I just reread this thread and I can say that the labor involved in a service upgrade is pretty extensive, the permitting and materials aren’t terribly expensive, but I say that when I’m looking at breakers that cost thousands of dollars apiece…for just a breaker.

When it comes to material there is no reason to avoid aluminum in NEW equipment. aluminum has a bad reputation based on it’s use back in the 50’s and into the 70’s. It was a different material that what comprises modern aluminum conductors now. Also, the use of aluminum conductors now is generally restricted to larger wires, like the ones that feed your new panel and are common in new construction, commercial services and underground feeders for residential use as well as the feeders for ranges and other larger residential loads. Also, the new aluminum bus panels aren’t like the old ones for the same reasons.

Copper conductors cost considerably more as do copper bus panels. I’ve installed both and, as long as everything is properly installed, I’ve not had any issues with aluminum in the last 18 years vs copper.

I’m not a contractor but, again I’ve been a service truck electrician, foreman, superintendent and PM before I went back to working at Nucor. I would suggest Keithly Electric, Kemly Electric or Westside Electric (local and the did the High Strike Grill, but I’m not positive of the name).
