I am glad you found the flat-rate vs. hourly article. I wrote it in 2004! I added another titled “How to hire a plumber – no matter how they charge”

You can find it in the left column of my company site at http://www.seattleplumber.com

I would like some local feedback on these articles as they get read mostly out of the area.

    Hi Evan,

    .

I just read your latest article and found it quite informative. This is a must read for anyone hiring a plumber. Thanks for sharing.

I just had Mark Kessler replace all my old knob and tube wires, install some extra outlets and potlights. He and his crew did a fabulous job and I would hire him back in an instant. In fact, I plan on doing just that as I’m now inspired to add a couple more lights in the living room. His rates are reasonable, he cleans up at the end of each day and he’s pleasant and professional. Give Mark a call if you need electrical work done (206) 409-7046.

Can someone maybe explain why we have spoken with THREE electricians about our (small size) full kitchen remodel that requires some certified electrical work and some outside electrical work (also to comply with code on an upcoming project) and after they act all enthusiastic we never. hear. back? Poof they vanish? Is our project not “high end” enough for them? Is a job that’s less than $5K not worth their time? If that’s the case how in the world do people with small jobs that require certification even do it? I wouldn’t be asking this question if the electricians involved had at least responded to us by saying, “I am sorry, but your job is too small for me to take.” Some professionalism is called for methinks.

I hope we have luck with our FOURTH electrican contact.

Hey Al – We just went through the same thing with a bathroom remodel. Contacted 3 that were recommended here. Actually got one to come over look at the job,he told us he was going back to the office to work up the bid and would have it to us in an hour. That was in September. We are still waiting. Finally ended up hiring a friend that does it on the side.

    Good Luck !

Yes, ditto. Our fourth is an electrician friend of a friend who recently re-did their smaller kitchen as well. We have hopes.

Al, if you are still looking, I highly recommend Brad at Expert Electric (http://www.expertelectric-us.com/). Brad is a licensed & bonded master electrician that has been doing this for a long time (30+ years IIRC), and he’s a West Seattleite too. He has been helping me with a whole house rewire. He knows what he’s doing, is honest, reliable and is a great guy.

    Good luck!

This is a really interesting thread. We had Eagle come out because the light in our breakfast nook stopped working and we’d read good reviews. Upon arrival I was informed that the minimum charge for showing up was ~$275. Within minutes, the tech diagnosed that the switch had gone bad, without ever leaving the room except to shut cut off the electricity to the room. Took him less than 15 minutes. Since the fee was so high and it was my first experience with an electrician, I just paid it but asked him to hang a light for me and peek into the attic from the door just to see if all the knob and tube in our new house had been removed. He did that without charging “extra,” but based on the above, it seems the original quote was higher than I should have received. I had no idea. Disappointed.

is mr. sparky dave lund’s company? they used to be eagle electric?

we’ve had them (eagle) do more extensive – and expensive – work, wessie, and we found them to be very personable and professional. since they’re local to west seattle, they were punctual, too. they also received good reviews on angie’s list, and we’d rate them five/five stars.

i can’t speak to the $275 service call, but their pricing for bigger jobs was kind of like an a-la-carte menu: flat rates set for each job, rather than a time-and-materials cost.

for simple diagnoses like malfunctioning lights, sometimes handymen are the way to go.

Yes, Mister Sparky is the dba of Eagle Electric of Seattle. Thank you for all your kind words AND constructive criticism. Speaking as one of the owners of the company, sometimes things can go on in the field we are not privy to, if you feel that you have been disappointed with services the best thing to do is call and speak with one of us, we have guarantees and warranties we stand behind. And as a friendly reminder, in the state of WA you MUST be a licensed, certified electrical journeyman to work on anyone’s electrical beyond your own home (WAC 296-46B-980).

Looking for a electrician who will install a breaker 220v breaker in my panel and wire a outlet for 220v. This is for a table saw.

Call Dave Lind at Mr. Sparky. He’s amazing and does panel work all the time. He upgraded our shop panel in record time with competitive pricing. Nice guy, too! 248-8472

Have had Dave do commercial work and our friends have had him do residential work. He’s fantastic. Wouldn’t recommend anyone else.

Per all the raves on wsb I just tried to call Mr.Sparky/Eagle Electric and mis-dialed. I reached seattle electricians / electricians today. The receptionist was not very nice. I then called Mr.Sparky/Eagle Electric and got the best customer service any employer could hope to have….. I highly recommend them.

Recommendations for an electrician come from friends and family members. Make sure you follow up the recommendation with research. Check the internet for information. Look at the company’s web page to see what services they offer as well as the customer comments. Call the company. Talk to them to find out if the services they provide fit your needs, budget, and time.

We just hired ALKI ELECTRIC, Inc, (425-501-1570) Jim Fullwiler, to put lights and outlets in our basement. He was able to come in and in less than 1 day install 8 lights with outlets and 2 – 4 outlet boxes that required a new breaker. He did a great job, was very well priced, was on-time, courteous, and cleaned up after himself. I highly recommend him for any of your electrical needs. We couldn’t be happier, now we can see and have the use of a large area that was just a dark cave before!

As a Master Electrician I can tell you that if a contractor is going to try and hit you up for $250 for a “system test” you need to find a different electrician. This has been an issue in the past with other electrical contractors.

Also, a trip charge for service work is not an uncommon practice, if

Kudos to Brad at Expert Electric in West Seattle. I had an electrical problem in my home and gave him a call. He asked me some questions and was able to solve my problem on the phone. Now that’s what I call professionalism, honesty, and incredible service. Thank you Brad – I will definitely be calling you the next time I need an electrician!

Quick tangent to this, if I may: Are electricians the right people to call about pulling some CAT-6 internet cable? WiFi reception in my basement office has become untenable and I must get hard line or die. I figure they are used to pulling wire and boxes and such but it seems they might be too pricey for that? Thanks!

This might be a long shot, and I know different jobs have different pricing… But from experience, can anyone give a general idea of how much per hour Mr. Sparky charges for a general house call? I’ve called twice outside of business hours and have reached what seems to be their national call center, and can’t get answers or callbacks.

    Just curious, thanks.

We recently contracted with Washington Electric for the installation of a standby generator and were very, very pleased with their level of professionalism, knowledge, and pricing. We would not hesitate to recommend them and will call them should we need an electric contractor in the future.

Brad from Expert Electric is the best. He came out, promptly diagnosed my issue, provided advice on several other potential issues, and fixed the main problem for a most excellent price. I cant recommend him enough. Thorough and professional! His number has a permanent place in my phone.

Ditto about Brad from Expert Electric. Sharp as a tack and easy to work with. He installed a dusk-to-dawn porch light switch for us and – even better – programmed the thing. The instructions were not only confusing but wrong, but Brad knew the gotchas.
