There is something odd about this intersection. The placement of the light for eastbound Fauntleroy and the turn only lane westbound are examples. I see people running the light more often and trying to go straight from the right turn only. Before anyone turns left on a green from Oregon, make sure no one is blowing the eastbound or westbound light. I’ve filled out enforcement requests for 10 years but have never seen SPD there. That intersection IS an accident waiting to happen.

Congrats and good luck to their experiment. Admirable. I hope it succeeds. It might be hard to roll back pay if the experiment fails. On the other hand, it they succeed I think many other local restaurants might be willing to follow their lead.

I wonder if they consulted their staff members who rely on tips before they adopted this policy?

    Hi Kristin_S,

    ~

Thanks for your post on our local wsblog forum, reaching out to us local child care providers; much appreciated

    ~

I’ve been working with West Seattle families with infants/toddlers/prek for 13+ years, and I specialize in helping families with unexpected situations like yours, where I’ve also helped support the mom post-surgery

    ~

After many years as full time nanny, I now only do on-call/temp/emergency/last minute and date night babysitting; since I specialize in infants/toddlers (and they grow so fast), always open to new families; I have detailed resume and extensive list of reference letters; please contact me at divincent@aol.com for my intro letter/resume and refs; look forward to hearing from you; thanks, Diane

    ~

    ~

    ~

fyi, side note; you will never find me on care.com, (or sittercity, urbansitter; all exact same concept) which is akin to Amazon vs local shops; and they violate many fair employment laws; I wish people who care about community would reconsider using these highly financed/lawyered up high-tech profit machines; and please do like Kristin just did; shop local for nanny/babysitter/child care; we are right here in your community and look forward to hearing from you directly via this wonderful forum; and posting here also shows support for westseattleblog; thank you!!!

    ~

ps; I check this westseattleblog forum almost daily for child care requests; thank you to all the families who post here; I am incredibly grateful for all the wonderful families I’ve met via this forum over the years, and look forward to meeting more of you, and your kiddos

    ~

and thank you again to westseattleblog for providing us with this wonderful community resource; this forum; for free

We need to do something about affordable housing. I have a friend who is disabled for life. She gets a disability check for $700 a month. She lives in a crappy boarding house and pays $600 a month for rent. She is on a waiting list for Seattle Housing. The wait time is 2 to three years. If we are going to allow so many apartment buildings everywhere, we need to think about people who are disabled and cannot afford rent in these new places.

I had Century link internet for 12 years. I recently switched to Comcast after to many problems and horrible customer service. You say you live in Arbor Heights. Keep in mind, one reason we switched to Comcast is because Century Link told me they had not upgraded Arbor heights in over 10 years and High Speed broadband was years away.I was paying for 1.5 but never had more then 1.3. I now have !0 with Comcast. I have had it for over a month and I am happy, so far.

Before you think about Century link, find out what speed they can give you and if you are in an upgraded area.

We have used Sean Tillman of Tillman Construction. He is a licensed and bonded contractor based in Seattle. It is just him, except for the occasional time he subs out part of a project. He does big things and small things, does top quality work, and is a joy to work with. Once people work with him he is their forever go-to guy. He slowly but steadily did our complete inside remodel, but when we needed an emergency railing after my husband’s stroke he was right there. And right now he is working on making a custom baby gate thing following my panicked call to him after our high energy new puppy began swallowing inedible objects and must now be kept out of parts of the house. He recently did some painting for a friend of mine putting her house up for sale. I hear nightmare stories sometimes about working with contractors and others in the home building and repair trades and I feel so blessed that I have found Sean. He lives in SeaTac, so almost West Seattle. His number is 253-229-5368.

I have exchanged voicemails with the person responsible for the timing of the lights. He said the entire strip along Fauntleroy is scheduled to be readjusted, but he didn’t say when. I said it would be good to deal with this light as soon as possible because it does make more of a hazard at an intersection they’ve already identified as problematic even before this recent change. I don’t know the in’s and out’s of adjusting one light but I imagine that’s tricky. I’ll continue to follow up and see if I can reach him directly.

The light at Oregon is still only letting a few cars go at various times of the day, including about 10 minutes ago. Hope they fix it soon. I’ve traveled through it for 10 years + and until recently, never saw people turning left on to OR from eastbound Fauntleroy. It happens often now and causes a problem because they can basically only go on a red (when OR has a green) further delaying the small amount of time OR already has.

I heard back from sdot on Avalon eastbound at 35th. Construction damaged a sensor which has been limiting the green time. Grrr.

This is a rare opportunity to work in the corporate offices of a local, privately owned and wildly successful small restaurant chain. Salty’s is truly in a class by itself with award-winning Northwest seafood and steak cuisine, perfectly friendly service, and iconic waterfront locations.

The Salty’s Seafood Grills’ Corporate Office is located on beautiful Alki Beach and houses our Guest Services Call Center. You can hear our Guest Services Representatives smiling through the phone as they field guest calls, responding to guest needs and inquiries as well as booking reservations for all 3 beautiful Salty’s locations.

The Call Center operates 7 days each week, from 8:30am until 8:30pm. In addition to operating as the reservation center, the Salty’s Seafood Grills Call Center also conducts sales and marketing calls.

The available position is for a full-time (40 hours per week) receptionist and requires day, evening, weekend and holiday availability.

$15 per hour, plus restaurant tip pool!

A clear communication style and warm inviting tone is a must for this position!

Experience with the Open Table reservation system would be a plus, but not required.

Interested applicants are invited to attend our Open Call Interview on Mondays at Salty’s on Alki beginning promptly at 1pm. Please arrive early to complete an application.

Interested but can’t make the Open Call Interview? Please contact Salty’s Hiring Manager Katie Englund at kenglund@saltys.com

We look forward to meeting you!

It’s gotten to the point that I need drugs, alcohol, or both if I have to call CenturyLink for any reason. A very simple problem can result in seven hours on the phone. I AM NOT KIDDING.

I once tried to call in a commendation for a CLink service technician who’d come to my house. After 45 minutes on the phone, I realized the illiterate jerk had no idea what the word “commendation” meant. I assured him he would never have reason to know.

skeets…when you retire…hmmm…I’m 68, and my ONLY family is here…daughter, hubby, and grandchild. So, up and moving to where I know no one, across the state, where the healthcare (yes, I need that on a regular basis w/transplant)may not be what I need to be receiving, makes for a conundrum. Yes, I work part time, but am getting ready to retire by years end, and will totally be on a fixed income. And there are many more just like me. This city is slowly getting rid of us, and will only be a city of the well-to-do. I’m not sure what the answer is. We have a city gov’t. that only forms “Task forces”…they have a habit of talking things to death (affordable housing, for instance), while the prices go up and up and up, and nothing gets done. Seattle may be on the top lists of desirable places to live, but for who (whom?)?

18 months ago I was in the middle of a divorce and looking for an apartment on my own. The house we rented 1/2 mile from the Junction was $1300 and 2,000 square feet. I ended up in a 1BR in the Junction, 1/3 the size of the house, and paying $1200. The building across the street from me was a similar price point (I was looking at both), and now that place is in the middle of major renovations and charging $1700 for 1BR. Even my own building – not a new or fancy one – is charging $150 more for my size apartment now than when I moved in 18 months ago. A new one being built in the Junction is advertising nearly $2,000 for a 1BR and $3,000 for a 2BR. What people don’t realize too is that most of these new apartments are asking for proof that you make 2-3 times the rent. So a $3,000 apartment requires you to earn $72,000 – $108,000 a year. If you’re not lucky enough to have a partner or roommate, that’s a lot. It’s a lot for a lot of couples I know too.

There’s a lot of talk about “affordable housing.” The thing is, I believe when they refer to “affordable,” it’s a buzzword for “low income.” I am not a low income person, but after I pay every last damned thing I’m required to pay each month, I don’t have a tremendous amount left. The amount of my annual raises is WAY surpassed by increases in everything, not just rent, so each year I am left with less and less money at the end of the month. I know I am not alone out there. I’m grateful that I was able to lock into a 2 year lease 6 months ago when I renewed, at a reasonable renewal. I’m not so sure what will happen when the lease is up in 18 more months. I know I certainly can’t afford any of the new construction alternatives in the Junction.
