JanSParticipantskeets…when you retire…hmmm…I’m 68, and my ONLY family is here…daughter, hubby, and grandchild. So, up and moving to where I know no one, across the state, where the healthcare (yes, I need that on a regular basis w/transplant)may not be what I need to be receiving, makes for a conundrum. Yes, I work part time, but am getting ready to retire by years end, and will totally be on a fixed income. And there are many more just like me. This city is slowly getting rid of us, and will only be a city of the well-to-do. I’m not sure what the answer is. We have a city gov’t. that only forms “Task forces”…they have a habit of talking things to death (affordable housing, for instance), while the prices go up and up and up, and nothing gets done. Seattle may be on the top lists of desirable places to live, but for who (whom?)?

JanSParticipanttake the time to read this. A friend posted it on Facebook…it says a lot..

datamuseParticipantI just read that. So sad. And not unusual–everyone I know on disability struggles, including those living in way cheaper places than Seattle.

skeeterParticipantThanks JanS.
You mentioned “I’m not sure what the answer is.”
I’m in the same boat. I also don’t have the answer.

JanSParticipantdata…it’s effing scary. my rent has gone up approximately 33% since last September…and I’m making it (nothing left over, of course)…
I’m sure there are some who would tell me to drop the internet…you know, to save on expenses. I stay at home. I don’t take myself out to movies, plays, dinner, lunch, breakfast. I shop for clothes occasionally, mostly on sale, and second hand at time…and friends give me handmedowns. Internet is a small price to pay for not going stir crazy ! If I could start a business about smoke and mirrors, we could all get rich…lol

QSMemberDoes anyone know if there’s a way to contact the advisory committee as a whole? I’d like to send them an email (or mail them a letter) with my thoughts on the housing crisis.
I did take the housing survey using the link that Tracy provided in a story a few months back. Does anyone know who is heading the committee? Is it Sally Clark?

WSBKeymasterCM Clark heads a related Council committee:

The 28-member special advisory committee is under Mayor Murray’s wing:

Michael WaldoParticipantWe need to do something about affordable housing. I have a friend who is disabled for life. She gets a disability check for $700 a month. She lives in a crappy boarding house and pays $600 a month for rent. She is on a waiting list for Seattle Housing. The wait time is 2 to three years. If we are going to allow so many apartment buildings everywhere, we need to think about people who are disabled and cannot afford rent in these new places.

DianeParticipantTHIS is just one, much needed solution; needs to be implemented now
