In reply to: Just Say No To Red Light Cameras
JanSParticipantI read it…red light cameras have nothing to do with speeding sometimes…that’s why I was asking specifically about the statistics HERE IN SEATTLE re: the 24 cameras. I can be coming down 35th at Morgan, run the red light, at 30 mph. I’m not gonna speed up or slow down and then speed up again, so as to cause myself to be rear-ended. I’m a massage therapist…I treat too many people with whiplash :)
and that is why I asked for info on numbers HERE. The link/story you posted is about Schaumberg, IL…and people making illegal right turns on red, and getting caught. And it’s about AZ, and speeding cams…red light cams and speeding cams are apples and oranges.
I don’t need to know aobut AZ or Illinois..I ain’t going there. But you said “If rear-end collisions are up, regardless of side impact collisions data, how does that confirm safety is improved? “
I asked “Are they truly up?” here in SEattle…are there numbers, statistics…it’s a valid question, and has nothing to do with your article, which I HAVE read…

WSMomParticipantI too froze at Pegasus this winter…it didn’t occur to me to wonder about the space heaters, I also thought it was because of the door opening and closing. Does heating an entire restaurant with space heaters meet fire code??
I was excited that Pegasus moved to a new location so that I could start eating there again. After hearing about the rat problem at the old place I had to deny myself my favorite pizza in the world: Tom’s Special! Love the crunchy pepperoni, reminds me of bacon with a extra kick.

AnonymousInactiveJiggers, I agree.
JanS – I TOTALLY understand not wanting to read an article. But, I can’t figure out why you would comment on an article that you haven’t (and don’t want to) read.
No worries, I’m just still wondering how a rise in rear-end collisions is proof that safety is improving??

JiggersMemberI’m sure it’s been said here, but to regurgitate that red light cameras don’t promote speed safety concerns. They are nothing more than a legal way to generate revenue for the city.

JiggersMemberNo need be sorry. BDG. I can hold my own and more. I love good argument and can dish it back. We are mostly in the same boat in these economical uncertain times unless your name ends with Allen or Gates. In fact, I’m actually trying out new healthier recipies now since the economy has affected me. It’s all for the better for me in the long run. The more you know how to cook for youself the longer you’ll live. It’s a fact. I used to eat out a lot when I was younger. I actually plan the food week ahead, something I never used to do. Sorry to digress.

JiggersMemberI could afford it, but as I have stated before, I’ve been to dozens of nice restaurants over the years not too mention worked in several. Been there done that. I’ve seen it all. Expensive dinners don’t impress me one bit. Service does. Actually Revo is moderately priced. I can cook pretty decent at home so I’m never hungry because cooking for one is harder than you think, you always cook more than you need. Nowday’s, I’d rather just go out and spend $40 dollars on myself and get sloshed on drinks. Way more fun.
March 29, 2009 at 10:24 pm #660403In reply to: Just Say No To Red Light Cameras
JoBParticipanti have to point out that being rear-ended is much less likely to kill anyone in either car than a side impact collision…
So if that was the only impact result… i would say ultimate safety is improved…

AnonymousInactiveI don’t think professional critics have better taste buds or service standards. What they bring to the equation for me is consistency, and hopefully a lack of bias.
When you do it as a job, you don’t bring in an attitude of personal loss/gain. When it’s my dime, I get upset more easily at what I perceive a lack of value and continue to be skeptical throughout the meal. If this is the only time I can afford a nice restaurant, I expect perfection.
A professional would be familiar with nuances, and what is or is not outside the norm. What is a controllable mistake, and what should be expected.
And with regard to consistency, even if the reviewer did not share my preferences, their opinions would still allow me to judge for myself. I would have a starting place that is always the same, not based on emotion or association. As it is with movie reviewers, I know which ones I share opinions. I give their review more weight because I generally agree.
As for neighborhood opinion, of course that is up for consideration and can be valuable. However, in this format, with anonymous identity and the ability to change identities, nothing is stopping friends, family, or competition from flooding the thread.
AnonymousInactiveTrey isn’t dead yet? Or did he get clean…
If he got clean then you will see the solos shorten and the performance will be a little more up-tempo just like Eric Clapton at the Concord Pavilion circa 1986 not long after being released from rehabilitation related to alcohol and cocaine abuse.
Fastest version of the song “Cocaine” ever performed live by Eric Clapton, at approximately 158bpm. It was like he just wanted to get it done and out of the way so he could move on to “Forever Man”.

JustSarahParticipantOh, datamuse… I relate, except that’s similar to what happened with me and coffee. I was around it so much working as a barista that I always smelled like coffee and steamed milk. No, it’s not a good thing after a while. Plus, I worked the opening shift frequently, so I lived off espresso until 1 pm or so; now I can only have the tiniest amount of coffee without feeling sick.
I have nothing to contribute to the donut conversation; never been much of a fan. *duck and run*

datamuseParticipantI know exactly why I don’t like donuts: I worked the Sunday morning shift at a bakery in high school. There were two churches within a few blocks of the bakery, and my shift covered just after morning services for both of them. Lines out the door for over an hour, full of people wanting donuts. Too much of a good thing.

CMPParticipantI think DonaQueen has mediocre donuts at best. I used to love Top Pot, but that was years ago before they ended up in Starbucks. Honestly, I love the munchkins at Dunkin Donuts, but that’s probably b/c you can’t get them west of the Mississippi so they’re a treat. Krispy Kreme makes a great chocolate cake donut. And I dig Safeway donuts over QFC, especially the chocolate frosted with sprinkles. Light and airy, but best fresh out of the oven of course. I’m going to check out Voodoo Donuts in Portland next time I’m there b/c I hear they’re great, but I’ll have to judge for myself.

joshMemberHello Jiggers,
I have a suggestion, can you please may be consider doing a review for us about Cafe Revo on this blog?
You seem extremely qualified. I guess I have to agree with the notion that during this times it might be difficult to find someone from the “usual sources” to do that. Please give it a thought. It’s just an idea. I also don’t know if there are any rules or policies on this blog against that.
Thank you in advance, Josh.

FullTiltParticipantThis place has amazing donuts. It is a little hard to get into on the weekends, because the place is packed. Everything in the case is fresh, but you can also ask what is fresh in the back. If you have never had a hot apple fritter, you’re missing a true joy in life.
AS far as top pot goes, I think they are just over priced, plain ol donuts. Lets be honest here, there is only so high you can take the common donut. You can take it in a different direction, like Mighty O has done with their vegan creations, but at the end of the day, it is still just a donut.
Just to address a previous topic on ameture vs pro food reviews, I have some knowledge on this topic. I am a fat guy, that before opening an ice cream shop, was a carpenter, and a proffesional fisherman, I know my donuts. I have had Krispy Kreme’s Safeway, 7-11, Duncan(I wish one was local), and almost every little shop in the area. Southern California, has a much better selection of mom and pop donutarias than the North West, but there are a few here that can measure up. That little shop in white center makes a mean donut. DO not get there at 3 in the afternoon, and expect a great donut. These things have a really short shelf life, and if you can not get your lazy ass out of bed before noon, maybe you should stick to bagels. Good luck finding a decent one of those in the area though.
I have not tried it, but I have heard they make this amazing chicken and rice soup, buit only on weekends. Maybe that will be my next White Center Now write up.

JanSParticipantI agree about the fencing, Dale.
The use of the hole? Well, imaginatively…line it with concrete, with water-in, and water-out plumbing, add a diving board, some landscaping and a plexiglass dome..maybe some heat for the H2O…call it West Seattle Municipal Pool ;-) ..charge 2 bucks for an afternoon of swimming…you have to bring your own towel – lol….

March 29, 2009 at 5:38 am #662455WSBKeymasterWas the “being disbanded” entity the Community Police Team, perhaps? It was just the subject of a presentation at the Crime Prevention Council but nothing about disbanding – they are one person short at the moment because of an illness or disability, though.

JeffroMemberI would kill for a Top Pot here in Westside. I know you can get them at some Starbucks, but I’m a sucker for the Bavarian Cream, which I never see.
My question – where is the best doughnut in West Seattle? Or even a mediocre doughnut? Okay, not safeway or 7-11. Muffins and cupcakes need not apply.

AnonymousInactiveJulie, thank-you for clearing that up. I assumed. Very sorry. And I totally agree, there is some crazy out there. I think it said someone went after a camera with an axe as well. He may have bigger problems than a ticket.
March 29, 2009 at 4:56 am #662453banglesMemberYes, we spoke with the cops today. They will come out to take a formal report tomorrow. They also mentioned something about their “community task force” or some similar name being disbanded. They said normally, that would be the department which would handle such a report/complaint. It sounded like a budget cut thing.
March 29, 2009 at 4:54 am #590275banglesMemberI just want to rant about the little SOB who felt the need to tag our fence, ADT sign and recycle bins with the number 8 (gang symbol?) sometime in the last week. In addition, our neighbor observed a light-colored minivan parked in the alley behind our house early Friday morning. As he approached, someone quickly jumped in the back and they took off. License plate was 784-XRW. Perhaps unrelated but becoming too frequent none-the-less. Be on the lookout in hopes no one else has to rant about the same people doing the same to them. We live on 42nd SW in the Admiral/Belvedere area. Also, we want to RAVE about our neighbors, without them keeping an eye out, we would not have known. A good case for neighborhood watch indeed!
