I’ve lived at Alki Beach for 20 years and have seen the same issues. No one pays attention to what lane they are in. I think most people have no idea that there ARE separate lanes for wheels and pedestrians. There used to be painted words and “sharrows” on the paths, but most of those were worn away long ago, and never maintained or improved.

People ignored them anyway and lollygagged in the bike lane. To get around that, the cyclists started using the street, which is not safe for them. I’ve also seen more runners using the street, and that’s not safe, either.

In other parts of the city, green paint is used to designated bicycle lanes. It seems to work well. The green has become immediately recognizable as indicating a bike lane. That might be a start. I like the yellow dashed line idea, too. I wonder how other beach parks handle their traffic and if someone has created a good plan that we could adapt to our situation. I don’t think people associate running with bike lanes, so it would take some education to get people to understand that. But separating runners from pedestrians out for a stroll is a good idea.

Thanks for bringing this up, Jeff. It is way past time for the city to address this. Many people come to Alki for recreation and exercise. That’s a good thing. But with the crowds there comes a high degree of disorder. Good space planning and graphic design could go a long way toward making this area safer and more user friendly.

I don’t know if this is an issue for Parks or SDOT or ?? But I hope that someone who reads these posts will point us in the right direction.

United Friends Group Homes is currently hiring several caring individuals to work as part of a Direct Support Professional team for 8 adults with intellectual disabilities in a group home setting. Currently hiring 2-3 Full Time afternoon/evening positions in West Seattle. Typical shifts will have you working with 3-4 other staff to support the 8 residents.

All shifts require some weekend work (Sunday hours are a requirement on all shifts, Saturday is also required for some of the open shifts).

Vital duties usually include facilitating integration of the residents into the community (This duty is currently on hold for the most part due to COVID-19 but will be starting up again soon), assisting residents to be as independent as possible, cleaning, cooking, instruction, documentation, transportation of residents, assisting with medication, providing first aid when needed, assisting adults with personal hygiene (including bathing, dressing, lavatory needs for ALL genders) and providing supportive listening.

No certification is necessary at hire as we can train the right candidates; however, a currently valid NA-C or HCA (Home Care Aide) Certification is preferred as it significantly shortens the training period and allows you more freedom in arranging resident outings and other social activities.

    All necessary training is PAID.

Absolutely necessary are the following prerequisites:

At least 18 years old High School diploma or GED

Ability to read/write/speak in English (the language of the residents)

Ability to attend mandatory training sessions as needed (these are typically during weekdays ranging in time from 8am-5pm).

Ability to work a variety of shifts (INCLUDING weekends) since we are staffed 24 hrs/day and have multiple openings. CURRENTLY HIRING FOR WEST SEATTLE LOCATION for multiple positions; all open positions REQUIRE working some hours on Sunday.

Prospective employees must pass fingerprint-based criminal background check. A valid WA state Driver License (or ability to get one within 30 days of hire) and a good driving record are necessary for transporting residents. The currently available positions may require occasional transporting.

I found this article because I spent many years in a community where it is not an issue (Tung Chung) Hong Kong to where it is (S. Main) Memphis TN. So in HK it is considered irresponsible, a rude and illegal to not know how to care for your pet without inconveniencing others by sight/smell of their waste. There are fines and someone can click a photo and report you. You pick up the poo and use a water/enzyme to dilute the area, urine is also diluted. People are educated that these are waste akin to human waste and it is a public hygiene issue. Many try to catch the poo on newspaper so it does not even soil the ground. There are small cans for this sort of waste that are emptied frequently as regular cans are only weekly. There are signs posted that explain the waste ruins landscaping and paint and costs everyone more money….and it does.

There are many ways to allow your pet to use the restroom in your space, your home so you are responsible. It would be oh so annoying if your neighbor had a toddler they allowed to squat on your doormat to urinate. Allowing your pet to use private property/public space as a toilet without doing something about it is the same thing.

In the area where I am now people let their pets urinate on city property, we now have to repaint light poles. One business had so many dogs urinate that they had to remove all their landscaping. Another one the urine was drawn up into their plant pots and they had to be replaced $300 each billed to the HOA. This is so incredibly inconsiderate. Public trash cans are only emptied weekly…imagine the poop of 10 dogs baking in the trash can outside your business. The city only picks up once a week–take it home with you if possible. A local paid parking lot let pets use their green space provided they clean up….nope, wedding and other guests stepped in ….. and he had to refund their money. That small business took a $1k hit over someone elses dog poop and that is just one instance.

If you take on the responsibility of the pet it is just like when you have a child. It is not permission to inconvenience others in any way, at least not in developed societies.

For those who don’t know where/how their pet should go search ‘pet etiquette’ it is a training issue. Dollar Tree has bags and the enzyme to help with odor/dilute the area. Squeeze Gatorade and old water bottles work great for this. If you can’t afford to properly take responsibility for your pet reach out the HSUS for financial assistance or help in training.

We can all reach out to our vets, pet stores and encourage them to help educate people in this area. I know some buildings now ban pets because of this. We are researching things to also deal with barking and the amount of pet hair has caused us to have to pay for extra plumbing services. I have pets but there are many who do not understand the full expense on owning a pet.

Show your support for #Black Lives Matter! The “Respect” quilt project: allies at work
The “Respect” quilt is a result of Black and white creators working together to honor Black women’s beauty, history, and resilience.
The first one, underway, is being created by a former teacher, a white woman, for a former student of hers, a Black woman in South Bend, Indiana. When in her class at age 15, the young woman wrote and illustrated a short story, “Overcoming Adversity,” which stayed in the mind of her teacher all these years. (Discussions are afoot about revising it and publishing it with Honey Girl Books and Gifts LLC.)
The “Respect” quilt features African fabrics (waxes and Ankara cottons), Afrocentric fabrics, such as Harlem Toile de Jouy designed by Sheila Bridges and the striking AphroChic silhouettes (both in Brooklyn, NY), and other fabrics purchased from African-American business women across the USA, including Our Fabric Stash in the Pike Place Market (Seattle). It is the intention to celebrate and honor Black womanhood that we all share.
The quilts are pieced together in blocks with symbolic messages about the joys and pains of life; each has two pockets on the front (one flannel shirt and one Levi’s jeans) and one on the back made of Levi’s jeans with patches on it. The three patches shout out our political message: “Respect existence or expect resistance”; “Malcolm X”, and “One Love” (from a Bob Marley song). These quilts are a message of sisterly love, a reminder of the work to be done, and a call for unity among people.

The first Respect Quilts (Queen size) are in progress, due on or before October 15, 2020. Check our website for more photos! https://www.honeygirlbooks.com/

Orders are accepted now for Respect quilts no. 3 and beyond. Can be used as a wall-hanging or bed cover. Two sizes: Queen size or Small (Love Seat / Couch Throw). Queen size: $750; Small: $500. They are for a fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of St Joseph County, IN & King County, WA. For every “Respect” quilt sold, 50% of proceeds will be donated. Hi! It’s been fun to “meet” so many neighbors during this strange time, via face mask sales in my front yard, but I’ve had enough of face mask making. I’m quitting the face mask business on September 1, 2020, to devote my energies to artsy quilts, esp. the “Respect” quilt: a #BLM-focused project.

Today my wife and I took out pup for a romp in the bark park. After my dog ran herself down we walked the loop around the new playground, which is pretty awesome and on the return trip to the dag area we passed two women who were throwing a ball for their dogs…right next to but not in…the dog area. We called them on it, of course.

I pointed out that they were right next to the off leash area.

They said that they knew that but their dogs are small and there are so many big dogs. One woman said “Thank you!”.

I said there was a dedicated are for small dogs. One of the women said “Thank you!”.

They couldn’t care less. Alas, I was with my wife, who doesn’t always appreciate the way I do things, in my ever so direct fashion, so I left it there. If it was just me I would’ve taken the time to take their picture, posted it wherever I could, pointed out to everyone walking by that they were clearly ‘special’ and whatever else would’ve come to mind.

They were precisely the people that make all of us dog owners look bad.

I also think that the woman who thanked me for laying some knowledge on them was not really thanking me. I think she was being sarcastic and rude.

I’d add the closing of Boren to the same category. And Roxhill not getting an upgraded facility. And the playground equipment inequity. And kids that ride busses standing outside waiting for up to 30 minutes in the pouring rain getting drenched to the skin.
Don’t get me started on Wi-Fi availability and laptops and printers.
That’s what I see/observe. I’d like to hear/listen about what current experiences are.

The port bus situation was per my partner, who is a flight attendant based in Sea-Tac. I’m sure things change but the last time he flew, the port bus was packed, people were not being hygienic and the passengers on the planes were the worst. He won’t fly/work until he feels it’s “safe”.

There’s been a blue kid’s padded jacket hanging on a post by the north playground in Lincoln Park for maybe a week. It’s got a hood and a fuzzy white lining. It looks like it might fit a kid of 6-8 years old? Looks like a nice jacket and I hope the owner can claim it.

Since good health still reigns, I’ve begun sewing face masks for neighbors and medical personnel in my home studio in West Seattle, now in Week Three of “Shelter in Place.” The 2-ply 100% cotton masks are made according to the directions published in the New York Times; they are available in Adult and Petite sizes, and are attached by cotton ties. See pictures here.

I’m offering them on a complimentary basis to medical personnel upon request, and $5.00 each for other folks. Cash on delivery: pick them up at my home studio in West Seattle (with sufficient social distancing, of course). Limit: 6 per household.

I applaud your approach and out-of-the-box thinking. In reality, I am not crazy about the thought of “hugging and touching” some dude from the internet. I’ll save that for my family. I am taking this seriously but not so seriously that I need to move to a rural setting and quarantine myself for 14 days if I go to the store and practice safe social distancing/hygiene. Hopefully you can find other like-minded individuals (perhaps someone that has already built a bunker and has a year or two of food and TP saved up). I also would rather see posts like this that are taking this pandemic seriously than the posts that don’t. I would be interested to find out how many people are willing to consider this but in the end we’re probably not gonna end up being hugging and touching roomies, sorry.
