    About us

    • We are two loving families looking for a special person to care for our children

    • We are easy going, approachable and adaptable, but we appreciate good organization and structure and place a premium on open communication

    • Both children are good natured with no health problems and good early development. 2 bundles of energy for one lucky nanny.

    • The houses where care will be are on the same block and

within walking distance to several playgrounds, a small commercial area, major bus stops and grocery stores. Also close to Lincoln Park and Alki; great locations for adventures and outings.

    • We are hoping to begin with a nanny part-time in December (a combination of half days and Christmas week off) and then full-time beginning in January.

If interested, please send your resume, contact info and available start date to lulubael at gmail dot com.

Hi. We have had a great experience with a math tutor for our two sons, ages 10 and 16. Michael Ezzo has helped with both our sons, at both their individual levels and we have had great results. Our 10 year old was placed in the advanced placement program and we (and especially our son) were uncertain how he would do jumping two years ahead in math. The solution was to call a tutor. Michael has a math degree from SUNY Potsdam, is young and energetic and is great with kids. Our son quickly caught up with his class and has excelled. Our experience with our 10 year old was good enough that we have added our 16 year old, who was working in pre-calculus (now calculus) and has had similar results. Michael is very easygoing, yet challenging and engaging for both elementary and high school students; I have nothing but praise for him and his methods. We meet at a local Starbucks for the lessons.

Michael Ezzo can be reached at ezzomr191@potsdam.edu

    silygrrl..

in the past i have pulled them and hung them upside down on a sheltered porch… or on the curtain rod just inside an unheated room…

i have already cleaned off the back half of the kitchen table.. but will leave stems attached.

i am risking waiting till tomorrow…

most of them will go into sauce anyway..

Further afield, but Schuh Farms in Skagit County has a wonderful Pumpkin Patch setup. You can ride hay wagon or farm cart out to the patch to pick your own, or if you don’t want to deal with the mud, etc. you can pick one from a pre-cut “patch” close to their farm stand. They have a corn maze, petting zoo, mini train ride, bounce house, and the coolest playground made out of repurposed materials from the farm. And of course cider, caramel apples, roasted corn and other goodies. It’s an annual tradition in our house and well worth the trip! http://www.skagitfarmmap.com/27.html

Please, please do not go to a school playground. Children play on them! Dogs pee, poop, then children play there. Yuck. I know you scoop, everyone does. But I am sure not every particle is scooped!

A child’s bike helmet was left at Fairmount Park Playground, sitting on the ledge by the walkway leading up to the playground. Dark red. We left it there- hopeful that the owner (or owner’s parents) would be able to retrieve it.

•DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON – follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

•NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service – anyone who asks you to do so is likely a scammer.

•FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.

•CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer “buyer protection” or “seller certification”

•NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)

•AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL “GUARANTEE” YOUR TRANSACTION.

•DO NOT RENT HOUSING WITHOUT SEEING THE INTERIOR, OR PURCHASE EXPENSIVE ITEMS SIGHT-UNSEEN – in all likelihood that housing unit is not actually for rent and that cheap item does not exist.

•DO NOT SUBMIT TO CREDIT CHECKS OR BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR A JOB OR FOR HOUSING UNTIL YOU HAVE MET THE INTERVIEWER OR LANDLORD/AGENT IN PERSON.

I also found a FitBit in the Gatewood Elem. school playground a few weeks back — I contacted FitBit the same day to see who the owner might be so I could get it back to them, but instead they sent me a generic email and FedEx mailing label that I didn’t get to in time and it timed out and I haven’t had a chance to get back in touch with them.

I thought the process would be much easier, just wanted to be able to return it to the owner but Fitbit wasn’t as helpful as I was hoping they’d be.

Tricky: Can you cross-post for me, too??? That might be better/faster than me contacting Fitbit (again).

JimmyG..because I don’t agree with your premise, you have to be snarky? I’m so sorry I intruded on your lovely little thread cutting people down.

WF…do you honestly think that I wouldn’t trade being able to work, and have a steady income for the health issues that I’ve had? Do you honestly feel that we planned these things, that I didn’t save for a rainy day, etc.etc.? That I made bad decisions? Crap happens, and the money runs out. You do the best you can. But do you honestly think that I’ve enjoyed open heart surgery, dialysis 3X a week for hours on end, etc? That I enjoyed chemo for months when I was dx with cancer? Seriously?

You moan and groan like I’m somehow taking food out of your mouth. I respectfully disagree with you about people just wanting a handout, and get used to having others pay for their ability to get through life. I’m damned lucky I’m still alive, and someone was generous enough to donate a kidney to me that will give me a second chance at a good life. I am grateful for any help I received, and don’t expect that to go on forever. Thank your lucky stars it didn’t happen to you!

ya know…if we – and I mean all of us, including Rico, WF, JimmyG, rats in a cage, if we don’t express what we believe, and just go along with opposing views, then what does that make us? There will always be opposing views, no matter where you are.

If we all believed the same thing, how boring would life be.

And to suggest that anyone on here has some kind of power on these forums or over the editor/monitor of these forums, is insulting to the editor of this “blog” and forum.

First thing you should know is that boundaries are changing in 2014/2015 and Schmitz is being rebuilt at the site of the former Genessee Hill elementary. Basically, there is a lot in flux right now so depending on when your child is starting school, much could and likely will change for both schools. Also, the district will be bringing in a new math curriculum for all k5 students in the next couple of years which has been one of the big draws for Schmitz Park (they use Singapore Math with good success whereas most other schools have been using the controversial Everyday Math). Both schools are currently quite large and crowded. Both schools have very active parent populations (ie excellent fundraising capability which is important with the tight budgets that currently exist). Neither school has much diversity (Lafayette might be slightly more diverse). Lafayette has undergone a lot of principal changes in the last few years which has been a distraction for the school and hard for the staff and parents. Lafayette has a self contained spectrum program so about 25% of the kids are in this advanced learning program (one spectrum classroom per grade). From what I understand, Schmitz uses a “walk-to” approach instead so kids get to work at their level. I only have direct experience at Lafayette and we left after one year for various reasons, although my child had a good year (great teacher). It is a good school with a lot to offer. I would just keep your ears open. Talk to parents at the playground and ask around. keep in mind that everyone has a different child and different perspective so one school might work great for you, but not for someone else (so take in that info with a grain of salt). The WS Blog has excellent coverage of school issues so keep an eye here. Boundaries will be changing so keep abreast of that. Hopefully, that will be settled by next spring (in time for 2014/15 enrollment). No school is perfect, even expensive private schools. If you are an involved parent, it counts for a lot. Good luck to you.

If the parenting is all your responsibility–society be damned–then pay for your kids’ education, too, and the playgrounds and any other public resources you suck up for your kids. You can’t–in fact, you won’t–get it both ways, ‘less you move to an atoll. It’s your vitriol that’s more offensive than anything your kids might do.

Queenie your comment of “none of the things you mention are anyone else’s responsibility” …. is ironic, because last time I checked, my children are MY responsibility and not a stranger at Trader Joes. If I understand correctly the children were talking about monsters under the cash register and no one was getting pushed or shoved or no one was yelling. I am very much the parent that will correct another child on the playground if they are doing something where they will get hurt, if they are cursing or if they are bullying my children or other children (I also don’t have issue with others correcting my children). I have no problem with correcting other people’s children when they are out of line or in harms way IF and only IF the parent is not right there handling the situation themselves. My point is when you see a parent doing the best they can to keep their children’s behavior in check and yet they still have to get out of the check out line, cut them some slack. Also keep your opinions to yourself when it comes to the small stuff. As mentioned above.. “that child should not be out without a hat” some lady yelled at me yesterday because my 5 year old chased a bird on the beach, I mean “come on”. I watched a lady at Alki last year scold some moms because their children were being too loud at the beach.. I am teaching my children to respect other people… I run a “tight” ship. I constantly remind my boys to be considerate of others, to be quiet in restaurants, to not put their feet up on the chair in front of them. But they are boys and they are 5 & 8 and they will be boys at times and sometimes no matter what happens- they are going to be loud. I have left many stores / venues when they have gotten out of line. I don’t have issue with someone turning around and asking my child to stop kicking the seat or asking them to keep their voices down.. What I take issue with is the unsolicited advice on silly stuff. I have also had numerous people approach us in public and talk about how well behaved they are… I don’t believe that anyone “owes” me compassion… I am just asking others to show compassion. I see so many moms out there- who are struggling and the judgement from people in public can just be too much. Asking for compassion for others is quite different than demanding it for myself. Finally

    – singularname… what is “”own all that,” how ’bout you also owning all costs of paying for public schools? How ’bout it? Sheesh …”

    what do I own exactly?

Hello! You are in the right place – West Seattle has over 100 homeschooling families and we have a terrific, supportive community here!

The Family Learning Program is the largest West Seattle homeschooling community. We are not affiliated with any religious organization or public school, and we embrace and support the entire spectrum of homeschooling philosophies and styles.

From mid Sept – early June we gather weekly (on Fridays from 9:30am-3:30pm) at the Southwest Teen Life Center. We offer a wide variety of classes and clubs for all ages, an open gym and playground, games and crafts, family swim and swim lessons.

We just wrapped up our spring session last week, but will have events throughout the summer to keep our community connected, so you can definitely get involved now!

The place to start is on our community Yahoo group – request to join by clicking here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SEAhomeschoolSWCC/. This will be a great place to make connections with other families and ask questions about getting started in homeschooling.

You can also like our facebook page at “Family Learning Program at SWCC”

Hope to see you around this summer!

    Cheers,

    Kathleen

My mother-in-law, Ann Allen has been missing from Providence Mount Saint Vincent assisted living since about 7:50 pm this evening. It is almost certain that she is outside the facility. She is 86 years old and suffers from fairly advanced dementia. She may believe that she is trying to return home to Windsor, Connecticut or to somplace in Illinois. She is wearing only a light tan or beige sweater with patterns, and she is probably carrying a black oxygen tank pack. She is about 5’2″. Please call the police immediately if you have any information.

It’s been said so many times here, but I guess it bears repeating:

    A tree IS a view.

“There are plenty of bushes and plants, berries and other oxygen-generating, lower-lying (i.e. shorter, not lower in terms of status) living things on the hillside that are beneficial to all life and holding up the hill. There are also many, many trees in all of our yards, with plenty of bird houses, bird feeders, bird-friendly flowers, bird baths, etc.”

It is clear from these comments that the writer has absolutely no concept of what constitutes an ecosystem outside of the urban construct. To answer the question, it is illegal to cut, trim or otherwise tamper with these trees. It never fails to amaze me that people can live in (or move to) one of the few areas in the world known for it’s majestic trees – and then want to chop them down for a “view” of something else that they have convinced themselves has more intrinsic value.

I hear there are great views outside Las Vegas.

Ok, I do need to clarify, and should have been more sensitive when I said “they have no purpose.” Of course, they have a purpose for birds, oxygen, etc.

We live on a bluff, if that is more specific. So, we’re not looking at a beltway of greenery, but at backyard that ends with a cliff that now has trees in front (or in back — on the opposite side of our yard) of it.

There are plenty of bushes and plants, berries and other oxygen-generating, lower-lying (i.e. shorter, not lower in terms of status) living things on the hillside that are beneficial to all life and holding up the hill. There are also many, many trees in all of our yards, with plenty of bird houses, bird feeders, bird-friendly flowers, bird baths, etc.

These trees were not here when we bought the property many years ago. If there were a mountain here blocking the view when we bought the property, we would not have bought it. If a mountain springs up tomorrow, I guess we’d be more worried as to why a mountain suddenly sprung up out of nowhere. If the trees were here and as thick as they are now when we bought the property, we may not have bought it without seeing if something could be done about their height.

I never said it was our property — I said it was public property. You all went to my poorly phrased “no purpose for the trees” rather than offer perhaps some workable solution that might keep the trees (trimming perhaps?) and let us enjoy the view that we searched and saved a lot to get many years ago (again, the trees were not there when we bought the property — we looked over the bluff — and have popped up in sight in the last few years. We have had family health issues and other concerns that have kept us from this during that time).

A simple answer like “call the city arborist” would have sufficed… I simply didn’t know where to start.
