cc625MemberAnyone know why there are locks on all entry gates to the fields?

WSBKeymasterCC – before I send an inquiry to Parks, would the gates NOT usually be locked between uses?

todd_ParticipantThose fields have a history/problem with off leash dogs and general vandalism. Those are my guesses.

WSLL GrienauerMemberYes, the field gates at Bar S are intentionally locked as Todd suggests due to the problems experienced with vandalism. West Seattle Little League has an use-agreement with the Seattle Parks Department. In exchange, a dedicated and hard-working group of volunteers from the West Seattle Little League community care for and maintain the fields and the facilities. If you’ve been by the fields over the past several weekends, you’ve likely seen a group of folks working on aerating, sanding and other field maintenance in advance of winter.

Rene SeymourMemberUp until now the community have used it as a “playground” I’ve seen kites, parents practicing with their children, games and remote control airplanes being flown by dads and their excited kids.
If the Bar S Playground has been converted to the exclusive use of the little league shouldn’t the costs for it’s maintenance come from the little league association dues?
If I’m going to pay taxes on a park the community should be able to use it.

BlandMemberWell, I pay taxes for Air Force One, but I doubt I’ll ever ride in it.
The community knows that Bar-S is not a regular park, rather, it comprises two baseball fields used by little leaguers. WSLL spends a pretty penny keeping them in shape. What’s worse is that people bring their dogs to the ball fields, and many use them for off-leash activities. Dogs dig holes in the fields and leave their business behind for someone else to pick up. For those who do:
Dogs are not allowed at organized athletic fields, beaches, or children’s play areas in Seattle parks, per the Seattle Municipal Code. They are welcome on leash everywhere else in the park system, and Seattle offers 11 wonderful off-leash areas where they can romp without leashes.
If taxpayers and others followed the rules, the gates wouldn’t have had to be secured. From what I hear, however, someone in the “community” has taken matters into their own hands. Shame on you!

WS5ParticipantWe all pay taxes for things we don’t personally use but somehow these taxes generally help communities. I don’t feel entitled to access every building/area at will. I can’t just go walk into a West Seattle High School and play indoors to keep out of the rain. Having Little League in our community is a huge benefit for boys, girls and adults. If you don’t have any kids come up and watch these kids play they are amazing. Every adult working there is a volunteer coaches, umpires, and people working in the snack shack, it this is a wonderful community effort. I don’t have any kids playing any more however still volunteer for LL and watch games it just feels right to be supporting our community and efforts to get people out to enjoy these wonderful fields.
