I saw 34th District Legislative candidate Marcee Stone at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market today, and as I always do when I see people at an event campaigning for public office, I went up to ask the most fundamental and revealing question I could think of. Marcee Stone was with a fellow politico and mutual friend from the 34th District Democratic club behind her holding her sign. I asked my friend how Marcee would do a better job than Joe Fitzgibbon to stop the enabling of the abuse of power by moneyed interests. My friend argued that Joe would have to “raise taxes” to pay for the promises he made to get his otherwise impressive endorsements from progressive organizations that came with contributions. I said I needed to know if the taxes would be robbing the poor to pay the rich or if it would be taking money from those that don’t need more money to help those that need more help. It’s a red flag for me when people talk about raising or reducing “taxes” if they don’t immediately indicate WHO is getting the greatest pain and WHO is getting the greatest gain from them. We were having a good, but a bit passionate discussion and Marcee snapped at us, upset that the energetic political discussion would hurt her image as she walked around the market trying to look as good as possible.

I want to say that I value the work Marcee has been doing over the years to promote a less sick way of doing election campaigns. I believe her work to promote public financing of campaigns has been aimed at reducing the corrupt influence of private money on our election process. That said, I’m afraid it may be that the stresses of an electoral system dominated by money itself including her own private money that led Marcee to be a bit snappy. The temperament that Marcee showed me raised Joe’s relative position from what it was before I saw that side of her. Now about Mike Heavey: The last time I saw Mike Heavey on the campaign trail I started trying to discuss the issue of election fraud. He said he didn’t care about election fraud. I do, and I believe that we had 2 terms of Bush because of it, and my lack of confidence in our election system gives me further lack of faith in our government. Now for Joe: I’m sure he isn’t perfect. None of us are, but I have only had good impressions of Joe Fitzgibbon, both in my personal interactions with him at the local Democratic club and in all of the recommendations I’ve heard from friends and others and read about him. He seems to be a bright, energetic guy with ideals. In my few interactions with him I detected a positive spirit and confidence and I would be surprised if he was temperamental. I hear he knocked on an enormous number of doors for quite a bit of face to face campaigning. As a former canvasser for peace and public interest groups I can relate to that. I’m voting for Joe. Ballots need to be postmarked by this Tuesday August 17th.

Any kind of fencing is expensive so you really need to think about what you need and want and how it goes with the house. There are lots of alternatives. Alki Fencing is good, All City Fencing is good. You might want to consult with a general contractor that does carpentry and this sort of thing. TJW Construction in West Seattle does some creative work: 938-2010. I’ve done cedar fencing as well as chain link with the privacy slats, both for different applications.

Yes, I realize some folks detest chain link fencing but over the long run, a chain link fence will likely last a lifetime or more and require ZERO maintenance.

Went to opening night and had the ‘name your price’ option as recommended by staff. Having been severely disappointed by Eness, the restaurant previously in this location, I had set low expectations.

I’m a difficult one for a kitchen too – cannot eat glutens + am vegetarian (do eat fish, though). My initial concern was whether the kitchen would be able to manage my requirements on a busy opening night.

I used to work in the service industry and appreciate attention to detail. The first thing I noticed was thoughtful choice of glassware. Martini glasses are thin just as they should be and the drink menu has a few well considered options rather than too many options that can stray. The staff was attentive, clearing plates and silverware that were no longer needed. I was impressed that everyone on staff was part of this process, not just the main food server. This says a lot about a restaurant when everyone is working diligently towards its success.

Five small plate courses looked gorgeous but not pretentious; the amounts were never too small/never too much – another very impressive sign. And every dish was absolutely perfect. Impeccable. This is the kind of food where you take your first bite, become wide eyed, look up at the person you’re eating with and whisper phrases typically reserved for orgasms.

Do not pass up the opportunity to eat here. Prices are very, very very reasonable considering the quality. Like Mashiko, if Blackboard Bistro continues this level of quality, it will be one of those unpretentious gems where you feel honored to sit at the table and take part in what only comes from the most talented and dedicated of chefs.

Fence: The job should simply not exist. It’s a bad idea, and It’s money that doesn’t need to be spent on a fence. If the govt has $4 mil to spend, buy more police and fire fighters. And pay paramedics more.

The monorail was a debacle from day one. Grossly misinformed voters. And, yes..City did try and stop it. I can certainly blame the govt for the $$ it pissed away NOT building it tho.

A state income tax? That’s pretty funny. I have never seen a state legislature with less guts to do whats tough than we have here. Why would we want a state income tax? When you have an income tax its usually taken right out of your pay, or at the least, your income is reported and its much more difficult to evade. What are all those shoppers that go to Oregon going to do? Start paying taxes? I don’t think so. We need to keep this easily avoided sales tax intact, its much easier for most to avoid paying…

Hm. TDe, was your bird flying low along the water? Maybe a great blue heron (wingspans up to 6′) or a cormorant (not so big but bigger than a lot of birds out there).

Juvenile bald eagles are another bird that people often wonder what they are; their wingspan is actually slightly larger than a mature adult bald eagle and they don’t have the white head or tail feathers yet.

I was hesitant to reply considering all the above opinions, but I wanted to answer the original question. Our child attends Holy Rosary (7th grade) and has since kindergarten. We are catholic and have found that the religious curriculum is definitely part of their everyday studies. However, I want to point out that they are taught about a loving, caring and forgiving God (which I think translates across many religions). None of the opinions mentioned above make it into the religious studies. Also, I can confirm that none of the teaching staff are priests or nuns, with the exception of a nun assisting in teaching their religion program to some of the grades. We have had a great experience so far and feel our child is learning more than we could ever had hoped for (yes, even sex ed in catholic school!) in a caring & loving community.

Yes, indeed. The eccentric constituency is extremely well represented in the slate of candidates in the King County Voters Guide. Had many chuckles with my husband and co-workers when reading it aloud. Wonder just how many votes Goodspaceguy and Mike the Mover get. Seems like they show up in the pamphlet every year. Some of newer candidates are s-c-a-r-y.

People of Earth! Hear me!

As some of you know, I recently used this forum to declare my candidacy for the office of US Senate. At the time I declared, I sincerely felt that I would be better able to represent you in Congress than either the incumbent (Patty Murray) or any of her presumptive challengers.

However, after reading through the latest edition of the King County Voters Guide, I have determined that the eccentric constituency is already well represented by this year’s slate of candidates. So there’s really no point in me running after all.

I hereby withdraw my candidacy.

To prove my point about the eccentric vote, I have included below some of my favorite remarks from the Voters’ Guide. Please note that all but one of the excerpts are from candidates for US Senate. In other words, I gathered this rich harvest from just the first few pages—of a 50-page document!

To those of you who would chide me for occasionally taking a candidates remarks out of context, I would ask you to consider the possibility that, in all likelihood, I have actually clarified the intended meaning of the candidate, such as it is.

That quoted letter is merely one man’s opinion. Certainly doesn’t represent the Catholics I know. By far. Not even close.

Taking this guy’s point of view and then pronouncing it to be the opinion of each member of that parish or all Catholics seems grossly reactionary and unfair. Perhaps i should mention that we have a judge seeking election for the Washington Supreme Court in this election who has expressed opinions on the issue of gay marriage …

It is so easy to focus on the highly visible political candidates and neglect the politics of the judges we elect.. but in my opinion.. their politics can be critical.. after all..the Supreme Court decision that stopped the vote recount in Florida and gave us George W Bush as president was a political decision… not a legal decision.

if Sandra Day O’Conner hadn’t admitted as much.. the wording of the decision itself… stating that this decision should NOT set precedent confirms the shaky legal standing of that ruling..

that one ruling illustrates the need for judges who rule on the basis of law and not on the basis of their political opinions.

the system of checks and balances built into our democracy requires a judicial system that rules on the basis of law.. not politics… to function fairly.

To start with, it sounds like you have one of the classic “scareware” programs. Often stealth installed via email from infected social networking sites users. Most are not really dangerous in the classic “data loss” sense but many of the recent ones allow piggyback of much more dangerous malware.

Try downloading and running malwarebytes from the authors site.

antivirus xp 20xx is one of the recent nasties that is multipart and stealth. It may also include a trojan backdoor that allows other scams and rootkits access to your computer at some point whether you pay or not.
