the top 1% are making out like bandits in the current economic downturn… and that increased wealth is NOT translating into job creation.

the threat of higher taxes isn’t stopping them from creating jobs…

they are investing their money in foreclosed properties and devalued stocks and overseas manufacturing…

There was enough wealth creation in the last year in the United States alone.. probably in this state alone… to put a major crimp in the recession if it had been invested here.

If the rich haven’t used their money to create jobs yet.. what makes you think that continuing their absurd tax advantages is going to change that?

if they aren’t investing it here.. what exactly is the rationale for voting down a tax that would invest some of that wealth here?

the newest buzz is that if we continue their tax free ride they will give half of it away.. well.. at least the best of them are going to give some of it away… to world charities focused on developing countries…

doesn’t that just give you the warm fuzzies.. until you realize of course that planned giving is another way to avoid taxes…

it may be a great boon to the world’s misery… and i don’t discount that… but those donations sure won’t do much help the recession here at home… nor will it do much for our deficit… but oh those warm fuzzies …

the myth that tax cuts generate jobs is just that.. a myth sold to us by an actor turned politician..

the trickle down theory hasn’t worked yet.. and it sure isn’t working in one of the greatest periods of prosperity for the top 1 %… so what miracle are you looking for to make it work now?

Have you checked petfinders.com? Also, you might try Craigslist under Lost and Found. You could post a notice. For instance I saw a “Lost Cockatiel” notice in Craigslist. It is probably not the same bird, but worth checking. Plus, they might want to adopt the bird your neighbor found.

Seriously, though: children don’t need to eat “kid food.” As the child of a chef who was raised to eat what I was fed (barring two foods I’m allergic to), I would actually rarely order from the kids’ menu. I loved every vegetable under the sun, but I don’t take credit for that; I liked so many varied foods because my parents fed them to me at a young age, and more importantly did not add disclaimers like “you may not like this,” or “this is too bitter/spicy/etc. for kids.”

Emmy looooves Darlene. She goes nuts when I ask her “do you want to go to Rottweiler day care?” They treat her like one of the family and I never worry about her. The first time she went there, when I came to pick her up she ran back into the house (and I cried inside, but that’s not the point). The best part is that normal “boarding” means a day of doggie day care, playing at the park, and sleeping on a comfy couch at night.

Emmy also wants to give a shout out to her day care boyfriend Capone. If Capone’s owners are out there in WSBLand, apparently your little man has quite the thing for my little lady.

Let’s not mislead people into thinking they’ll need to pay a percentage on their entire income. If as an individual you make $200,005 AGI, you’ll only pay tax on that last $5.

WAPolitico, I DID read your investment news article, and it appears to be based on anecdotes, rather than data. The articles I cited appear to refute or seriously undermine its assertions, and include data or links to data. The urban myth of the rich fleeing states that tax them does not appear to be supported.

And KMo hasn’t answered my question about B&O and property taxes, to back up the assertion that they will not offset 1098 taxes that would affect his or her business. I would like to understand under what circumstances this happens.

We installed some bamboo a few years ago and were disappointed with how easily it got scratched and dented.

We recently learned of woven strand bamboo which is much harder and more resilient. We installed it in another area of the house and love it. It’s much more durable. It has a slightly different look than the horizontal or vertical bamboo, but I love it.

I have a free twin mattress (no box spring). It is about 7 years old but in really good condition (older child slept in it so no stains) It is still firm and comes from a non smoking home. Only issue is that kitty has been scratching on the ends where it is being stored for the last week in our spare room. I could probably rustle up some sheets and mattress pads too. All free. Just come and get it.

Also I have a bunch of books that I would love to donate somewhere – cook books, teen reads, novels, school books – any ideas or takers? I want to get rid of all of them together (as opposed to someone going through and taking some)- will deliver to a good cause. Do schools still have book sales?

dobro, I’m obviously not talking about putting smiley faces around everything. I’m talking about creating an environment in which people feel free to exchange ideas and express contrary opinions without being insulted for their trouble. That’s what a forum is for, after all, is it not?

But what self-respecting person is going to want to venture a contrary opinion in a discussion in which one party has already made the claim that anyone who disagrees with him is necessarily a “Christianist nut,” etc. —and nobody has called him out on it?

It’s not just rude to say things like that to people, dobro. It’s intimidating.

Of course you’re not the first person who ever pulled that kind of nonsense in this forum. (I’ve done it myself, in fact.) And you’re certainly not the first person to do it on the Internet.

But the point is this: What kind of a blog would we rather have here? —A blog where the discussion goes like so:

Poster 1: Gay marriage should be legal already. It’s obvious that everyone who disagrees with me on this is a religious bigot.

Poster 2: Yeah, religious people can kiss my ass.

Poster 3: Right-on, dude! They can go to hell.

. . . or would we rather have a blog where the discussion goes more like this:

Poster 1: Gay marriage should be legal. It’s a question of human rights.

Poster 2: From a Christian perspective, I don’t agree. But let’s define what you mean by human rights . . .

Poster 3: What do the courts say about this?

In other words, do we want a real diversity of opinion here? Or do we want an echo chamber?

Or would we prefer an echo chamber?

You know, there are already plenty of Liberal blogs out there. Just like there are plenty of Conservative ones. But how many blogs are there where Liberals and Conservatives (and everybody in between) can meet up and air their differences civilly, and maybe even resolve a few of them in the process?

I’d like the WS Blog to be that kind of a blog. But it all depends on what kind of climate we create here.

1098 is just a start. We both know our legislators lack the testicles and ovaries to do the tough stuff. They only care about what will get them re-elected. Certainly the ABSENCE of state income taxes has had a real impact on my life in Washington:

a) I moved here to take a job with Microsoft, which Gates & Co. did NOT found in WA, but rather moved here from New Mexico. Beyond being Bill’s home, I understand that the absence of a state income tax actually won Washington State a large prize for the past 30 years.

b) We regularly recruit and hire employees from out-of-state, and bring them here to stable, high-paying positions. The lack of state income taxes lets me offer comparable salaries to them as they are paid by my out-of-state competitors, and for the employees it’s like getting a raise…

I’m very mixed on this legislation.

I wish the signature gatherers for the initiatives were not allowed to be paid. Then the initiative process would work as I believe it was intended to, to allow large grassroots movements an avenue to have an effect on legislation. The way it works now, it just gives big money special interests a way to circumvent the legislature.

I know there was a court case a few years ago deciding it was ok to pay for signature gatherers but I believe it was a wrong decision.

BTW, back to the original thread, marriage as a constitutional right has been addressed 14 times by the Supreme Court and is, in fact, a fundamental right under the law. there were interviews on TV today with the lawyers who won the case and they’re very informative, if you actually care about the issue. Google Ted Olsen and David Boies and I’m sure you can easily find the clips.

It’s pretty clear that “WAPolitico” is a troll working for the Defeat 1098 camp. All the comments he made are straight from their website.

In response to WaPolitico’s suggestion that the legislature will simply extend this tax to everyone in the future: that’s just plain dumb.

If history is any guide to the future, the state legislature will NOT expand this income tax downward. They haven’t implemented an income tax in Washington State in the last 130 years, so why would they do it now just because this initiative is passed? There’s no logic in that at all. To do so after this initiative is passed and thus to extend the income tax only on the lower and middle class, would be political suicide — as Mr. Faleschini said.

That said, I agree with some of the other commentators who suggested that the legislature SHOULD extend this income tax down. But I would only be in favor of it if the legislature used the expansion of the income tax to reduce the state sales tax. The state sales tax must be the next to go!

how do we replace the income from the lost sales tax of that 14% of state sales tax income ?

because according to your references those who would be affected by the new tax aren’t spending now.

African-Americans were brought to America as slaves and that was fine with the founders. Did we wait long enough to change that?
